climbing a mountain as never been harder. but the breath taking scenery you get makes it worth it.

Shadow of the Colossus is a very breath taking game, from taking in the scenery or taking down huge mountain like beasts. This probably is the most atmospheric game for the PS2, and is also a prequel to the game ICO something else that I strongly recommend looking up.

The game has you killing 16 colossal beasts to have your loved ones life restored. So once you take up the quest of killing all 16 you get on your horse Argo and run to each oh the colossi’s location. Using your sword you can make a beam of light (if you’re in sunlight) shoot out and lead you to the colossus. And you’ll soon realize that you are alone; there are no enemies except for the 16 colossus, so in between each battle you can always explore the breath taking scenery. After the journey to the colossus you’ll face another journey, getting up the huge beast. Usually you’ll have to use the environment or do something to the colossus to get it lower itself so you can grab onto a tuff of hair, or a ledge on the rock like body and then start to climb. While climbing the huge mass, you’ll be looking for a shining bluish mark that appears on the creature body when you have your sword drawn. Make your way to that mark and stab it until it disappears. Stabbing though does cause the colossus annoyance and it will try shaking you off while moaning in agony. When all blue marks are gone you vanquish the colossus and you move on to the next. It may sound easy but your grip has a meter and if that runs out you falls hundreds of feet to the ground. Though this doesn’t matter much cause you constantly regain health, but then again you have to work your way up the towering beast again. There are some minor problems like the camera which can be problematic at times. There are also times when you try to leap for the colossus patch of fur and grab on just too accidentally fall off it to the ground.

The Graphics are gorgeous, just walking around a little forest or meadow is breathtaking. There’s a lot of detail in this game, but that is also a limitation on the game. I don’t really mind but some people do care that there are some pop ups that come out of no where (like trees and mountains). But it’s the PS2 (not going to have HD graphics), and with as much detail as this has I don’t really mind. The cut scenes have a pretty cool feature where you’re able to move the camera around, which is kind of neat. Characters look go and wanderer (the main character) changes in appearance as you take down more colossus over time.

The sound is very good; all the colossi moan from pain when stabbed and it kind of makes you feel sorry for them. There’s great orchestration when climbing the colossi. Everyone speaks in a mysterious made up foreign language, which is pretty neat to hear. The length of the game is actually fairly short. It takes about 10 hours to complete and when you’re done there’s only a few things you can really do. There’s time attack mode where you can try to take down all the colossi in the fastest time possible. I think you get different equipment for doing this. There is also going back and playing the game over again(DUH), and there is also going back and taking in the scenery you can always try climbing up the tower where the mysterious voice gives you your mission of killing the colossi.

If anything you should check out this game, the atmosphere and beauty it has in it, not to mention killing huge monsters, is what makes this game truly great.
