An adventure game like no other game previously seen on its genre

User Rating: 8.5 | Shadow of the Colossus PS2
Shadow of the Colossus is an adventure based game in which you take the role of a nameless hero who wishes for his lover (wife, girlfriend or maybe none of the previous for its never really explained) to be revived by some sort of supernatural entity, that is found within the walls of an ancient temple, that in return demands that he defeats sixteen beasts called the "Colossi" each one considerably large sized before his wish is granted.
The adventure is centered around one particular scheme the hero is told by the entity where is his next foe and a slight yet fitting description of it, then the player is given the reigns of the main character and his loyal horse to travel across different lands every time in order to reach and defeat one by one all the sixteen Colossi, that's the least entertaining part of the game, although the sun light reflection of your sword will lead you always to the right direction the right path isn't always as obvious as the developers thought it was and the player is bound to get lost quite a few times and there are no battles, items or any kind of side quest in SOTC, meaning every time the player gets lost in the trip to the next battle the time lost has absolutely no other purpose than getting back on track, ultimately being annoying, frustrating and an anticlimactic waste of play time.
The trip preceding the battles against the Colossi can be rather enjoyable if there are no setbacks on the way, the scenery is beautiful to look at even for PS2 standards.
In shadow of the Colossus every boss fight is both a small puzzle and a fight; each colossus has a different weakness and has to be approached with new strategy every time, sometimes the key to beat the beast is in the environment, others have their weaknesses entirely on themselves in any case, the mysterious entity from the temple will provide any hints if it takes longer than expected to figure it out, with an astonishing soundtrack making the battles feel epic the atmosphere begins to engulf the player progressively as he hunts down the gigantic beasts throughout the game.
While one of the biggest complaints about shadow of the colossus is the controllers I have to say I didn't found them awkward feeling or unintuitive at any time, uncomfortable for some silly little things like mounting the horse for each trip but nothing that could drop my overall enjoyment of the game, a few where I'm I camera moments did though.
All and all shadow of the Colossus was a video game I didn't see coming but enjoyed best because of it, with an ending I will not spoil I can only wonder, what incredible video game team ico will deliver next.
