ordinary story and repetitive random battles.

User Rating: 6.7 | Shadow Hearts II PS2
I would have to say this one of the most disapointing games I've played on the PS2, but at the same time it has one of the best introductions I've seen to a game. I mean the opening cinematics were amazing when I first it and I thought that this new RPG series I was unfamiliar to was going to get me hooked.

At first the game appears to look amazing, but then after the first ten hours of gameplay, the combat system starts to get too easy and the repetitive random battles just don't seem fun and turn out to be more of a chore than fun. But what dissapointed me the most was the creatures that you encounter in battles. I just couldn't get into the whole fantasy slaying up monster thing, because to be honest, the creatures you encounter are not interesting enough or realistic to get you into the battles. The spells I also found to be a turn off as they seem to be not very satisfying to cast as they are very repetitive and lack variety. Not to mention how twisted and bizarre the plot turns out to be and how the main characters turn out to be outcasts thrown together with the most different backgrounds you could imagine.

One big plus though is the environments and some of the best looking settings you will find throughout the world. But I have to say the character detail isn't graphically stunning, but the graphics have set out what it was suppose to achieve, but the monsters you encounter during battles don't particularly look great but they still fit in with the games look.

I have to mention a big thumbs up to the cast of the voice acting. I thought this gave the game a lot of life and it shows the personality of each character to great effect. The only thing is the world music I have to say is very plain and leaves a bit of a stale taste in your mouth and can make the game feel like its dragging on.

Even though the game has a lot of great features and work done to it, I feel like it has been unravelled by its un-interesting story which tends to drag on with no real sense of anticipation or the suspense of the final climax which made Final Fantasy games legendary. I found the game in the end to be a bore after the first few hours with its bizarre cast of characters and ordinary story and repetitive random battles. But if you are into RPG's, you might just find this game to suit your taste.
