Shadow Complex is an unique experience that's definitely worth experiencing, but some flaws hold it back from greatness.
Jason Fleming and his girlfriend, Claire, head out on a cave hike, only to stumble on a secret military operation hidden underground. Claire gets held hostage and it's up to Jason aka you, to rescue her. The story is adequate and gets the job done, but it won't be up for any awards anytime soon.
Gameplay is solid for the most part. The game is basically a 2D side scrolling adventure with 3D elements mixed in. You aim with the right stick and shoot with the right trigger which work well. You have a good amount of collectibles including health packs, ammo, and new weapons to look for while you shoot enemy's. Every so often, you'll encounter a boss battle. It is quite enjoyable, but some little things get in the way. The aiming is too sensitive. Using the right stick seems like a good idea in theory, but in practice, it's kinda difficult to aim for enemy's. The game also mixes in some puzzles, but often it can become quite confusing to figure out what do do and where to go. Just navigating can be extremely confusing due to the map and getting used to the 3D elements.
Graphically, the game is one of the best on live arcade. The game really pops in HD. The effects and animations are both top notch. Sound is also impressive with good effects, music, and voice acting.
Shadow Complex is a solid game for the 1200 Microsoft points ($15). But some issues keep the game from being truly great. Be that as it may, if you are fan of old style side scrolling adventures, then give Shadow Complex a look.
