This game is very refreshing and deserves to be played. It is nice to see Rockstar can move beyond GTA.

I was really reluctant to play Red Dead Redemption; because of the boring and sometimes faulty gameplay of GTA. I decided to give Red Dead Redemption a try after doing a little more research about the game's content.
Red Dead Redemption is very impressive; because it doesn't exactly follow the same formula as GTA. Red Dead Redemption truly feels like a Western movie. I watched enough westerns to appreciate what Rockstar accomplished with this game.
Now lets move on to the review.
The graphics of this game is mind blowing. The character models and environments are perfect. I am happy to see Rockstar put more effort into the graphics of their new game. Riding on a horse through the sunset never looked this good. I love how the game shifts from night, day, and stormy weather. There are even times missions and stores are only available at a certain time of the day.
The gun fighting is fun as well. I love how hitting different parts of the body causes different reactions. For example, shooting a leg makes the target limp and shooting both legs makes the target completely immobile. It is funny to see a target trying to shoot you on his knees. You can also shoot while horse riding and driving a horse carriages. The movement in this game also looks less stiff and more smooth. The little things can make a huge difference.
The sound is excellent. The musical scores gets you in the mood to take on the wild west and the guns sound just like they should.
A former outlaw is forced to work with the federal gov't in order to get his family back. In this game, John Marston has to take on the sins of his past. The characters you meet are very amusing and likable. The voice acting is flawless. And the sandbox gameplay fits perfectly.
There is so much to do in this game that it is really easy to move away from the main story and play the side quests. Side quests are fun as well. For instance, you can herd cattle, tame wild horses, hunt animals, play horseshoes, play poker, fight in a traditional duel stand off, become a bounty hunter, take down threats to a certain someone's ranch, help the towns people, and more. You can even drink so much that you can't stand up straight.
It doesn't take much to walk into trouble in this game as well. I was shocked when I walked out of a bar and a woman was being stabbed to death right in front of me. Random things will happen around you all the times, so carefully try to take advantage of the situation to gain more reputation points.
You can fight crime or let the crime happen. You can also start a little trouble of your own; however causing havoc will cost you. You will have to pay for bounties placed on your head unless you don't mind being randomly assaulted for the reward money. Depending on your actions you will be respected by either outlaws or lawmen. You gain certain benefits when you lean more towards one side of the fence. This game has one of the best story modes of all time. You really feel like you are in a western movie.
If you want the story mode to be more challenging, then I suggest you put the targeting system on expert mode.
Didn't try much of it yet. I am still taking my time with the story. The story mode is like a fine wine that has to be savored slowly. The online fun starts when you get some friends to join your posse, so you can take on missions, face other posses, ride around, or hunt animals.
The undead nightmare is one of the biggest dlc additions I have ever seen. It provides a whole new offline story, missions, weapons, and online content. This dlc pack extends the replayability factor of this game even more. The undead nightmare brings zombies into the mix. ZOMBIES???
I can't wait to try it.
Despite the similarities, Red Dead Redemption easily separates itself from GTA story and gameplay wise. The elements of this game was put together well. And there is so much variety in the gameplay that you will not get bored. If this game would have had a real coop story mode, then it would have been the perfect game to me.
This game deserves a smoken 9.5 out of 10.
