Low budget but decent fun

User Rating: 7 | Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack! PC
In Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack, you play as one of the iconic headless kamikaze bombers in a 2D side scrolling game. Movement is automatic, and the controls are simple, one button to jump and one to attack. As the level scrolls, you are required to jump over dangers or some you can boot out of the way in order to prevent a premature explosion.

Using your attack increases your rage meter, and once it hits the maximum level; your character explodes. When not attacking, the meter will automatically deplete. After running the required distance, you catch up to Serious Sam and complete your mission of blowing yourself up and taking Sam down.

Each of the 40 levels contains a bonus objective such as kicking the frogs or missiles a certain amount of times. Although the main game isn't too challenging, by focussing on your bonus objective, it can be easy to die, either mistiming a jump or overdoing your rage meter. Some objectives are rather harsh so you need to endeavour to kick every object you see.

Some levels are against Sam directly, where he lobs bombs and missiles at you. The red ones just explode, but the green ones can be kicked back in his direction, and you have to hit him a set number of times to complete the level.

Along the way there are power-ups such as Extra Lives, Water to instantly cool your rage meter, Combo Bonuses to increase your score and Turtles to slow you down.

The 2D graphics are rather nice, with hand drawn characters and backgrounds. The simplistic style of the game means it is easy to pick up and play in short bursts. It isn't going to last long and doesn't have the insane difficulty that you expect from a Serious Sam title. Despite this, it does satisfy as a casual title and is surprisingly charming.
