An amazing HD remake of the original game to get back to old-school shooting from the 90's.

User Rating: 9.5 | Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter PC
When Croteam released "Serious Sam: The First Encounter" in 2001, it was a smash hit filled with excellent graphics, fun gameplay, humor, and a large replay value. Que to 8 years later where in the past, the sequels and spin-off games were released. Every Serious Sam fan loved the First Encounter, and just before we picked up the CD of the original copy, we saw Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter in development.

After the release of "Serious Sam II" with it's Serious Engine 2, it should've been expected that Croteam would create a new engine for a new Serious Sam game, and the Serious Engine 3 brought back the glorious colors just improved with modern-engine style of most shooters. The graphics handle the Egyptian-styled environments in a great fashion, and you'll often find yourself either staring at the details of the canyon in the Sand Canyon level, or at the massive waterfall in the Moon Mountains level.

The third-person view mode is also improved in the game, after some somewhat failed attempts in the past games, it's much easier to fire weapons at enemies and navigate through large open spaces for those who aren't used to the First-Person mode. The camera in much better as well due to the engine update.

Enemies and weapons have all been remodeled to the HD look, some experienced changes with their entire model or received a key feature that was used in the beta or alpha versions of the original First Encounter. Sam's model itself has been redesigned to what was similar to the original games, to fit with the Serious Engine 3.

The game does suffer from a few bugs, however. There aren't many that can cause a problem, but one can teleport a person to outer space from the Space Intro in Hatshepsut if wandering all the way out to the end near the canyon. A major bug is that a single person can jump on top of a Kamikaze and ride it or a group of them through shaky movement.

The Serious Editor and Serious Modeller tools are also available again to create mods and maps, although not much has changed since The first modding tools.

Overall, the remake of the original First Encounter is spectacular, and most fans who love the original shooter games from the 90's to the early 2000's are in for a treat. This is an excellent throwback and will have many players just trying to stay alive throughout many of the levels with the onslaughts of enemies attacking.

Extra Note: Gamespot gave this game a terrible review. Pay no attention to it.
