Sega's E3 Plans Feature Sonic, Alien: Isolation, and Hatsune Miku

Sega outlines what to expect from its E3 showing this coming week.

by

With E3 2014 so close to kicking off, Sega has announced the slate of games it plans to have on show during the event, and it consists of a lot of Sonic and the most promising Alien game in years.

Unlike fellow third-party publishers Electronic Arts and Ubisoft, Sega won't be hosting a press conference of its own. Regardless, it will have a handful of its upcoming games on display. More specifically, we'll be seeing Alien: Isolation (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC), Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (Wii U), Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS), and Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd (PS3 and PlayStation Vita).

It's not a huge number of games for a company that used to have a much larger presence at the annual conference. But with it not making sports games or hardware like it once did, the company has less to show, although it is curious that only one of these four games is actually developed internally by Sega.

Keep in mind, these plans don't preclude Sega from still making a surprise announcement of some sort--I've got my fingers crossed for word on a Western release of Phantasy Star Online 2, and others are no doubt hoping for a new Yakuza. For now, though, these are the only Sega games we'll definitely be seeing this coming week.

E3 kicks off on Monday with press conferences from Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, and Sony, followed by Nintendo's pre-recorded show on Tuesday. You'll be able to watch all of this and follow along with the week's happenings right here on GameSpot.

Miku only got a release because of a fan campaign, that's how hard it is to get anything out of Sega these days.

Sadly, Sega is being turned into a publisher, just a logo on boxes and DLC.

When Sega got of of the console game, I hoped that they would continue to make great games for other systems. It is difficult to believe that Sega is only currently working on a single game in-house, and even farming out Sonic to another publisher, only to approve and to put the Sega logo on the box at printing. They are not really sure what direction to take Sonic in. They have some great properties, but I guess none are really that popular nowadays. Hard to believe.

Hopefully they got no game stealing resources this time...

I've got high hopes for this one. Looks like they've finally found a winning formula for an Alien game.

The new Alien game seems promising with an interesting premise, but so did Murdered: Soul Suspect and that one didn't get very good reviews.

I really hope that Alien game turns out to be as good as the preview they already showed.  I love the first two Alien movies and if they capture the feel of the first movie that would be really awesome.  Plus, a survival horror game is always welcome.

No new Wonder Boy? Shame.

I'm hoping Sega brings out Christen Whitehead who announces hes working on bringing a remastered Sonic 3 and Knuckles with cut levels etc like he did with Sonic 1 and 2.

Sega is undoubtedly working on something itself with it's internal developers I highly doubt the likes of Sonic Team are twiddling their thumbs all this time.

This is a sad lineup for Sega. No Virtua Fighter 6? No real Sonic game a la Generations? No PSO2 for the West?

And what's up with this Aliens crap? This company has lost its marbles and identity. VF is a proven big money-maker in Japan and no sequel has been announced, what a strange company.

It's like if Nintendo said screw it to a new Mario Kart and instead sunk a bunch of money into pumping out crappy Blade Runner games.

Alien Isolation I'm in for, everything else from Sega? Not so much.

My hopes aren't high for the new Alien game.  Creative Assembly are fine... at strategy games.  They're totally untested with this genre.  I'd love to be wrong but we'll see.  Sonic... meh, I don't know how many people still care about Sonic.  Sonic's had so many awful and irrelevant games come out this last dozen years that it has fallen into obscurity.  Hatsune Miku... Shitsune Mipoo, and that's all I have to say about that.

I'd suggest doing a follow up to Sega GT... something the Wii U is sorely lacking whilst the Xbox has Forza and the Playstation has Gran Turismo.  I'm almost afraid there's no market for it what-so-ever when it comes to the Wii U audience though, even if the console doesn't have a racing sim.

I am extremely stoked for Alien:Isolation. Although I really wanted someone to do a decent Aliens Colonial Marines. Maybe Respawn could get the rights and do a proper remake?

Sega's PSO2 might finally get released to NA... after 2years, nah. It really seems like they hate non asians. I suppose its not really Sega, but if they own the game then they should have the say. Phantasy Star fans have been asking for more then 2years and they really haven't given a reply even.

PSO2 is a F2P game, and probably ruins the game as nearly all F2P do, it sucks cause they could have done something pretty good with it.

I haven't seen Sega's name in a long time, maybe they should just sell to Nintendo.

Poor Sega, I'm always rooting for their big comeback and it just never happens. =(

Shenmue 3 will be announced. It will be an endless runner for iOS and Android.

It is sad to see Sega in the state they are now. I think of all the IP's they have and are doing nothing with them. It makes me so mad to see this great company reduced to being in the game industry basement. I think their problem is they don't have a strong leader or the guts to right the ship. I can only hope they do some day.

The twist is that they're all in the same game.

This is what Oculus Rift was made for, imagine inviting friends over and let them have a go at it.

Love it if they surprised us with a console, since non of they new ones realty get me that excited, but I'm realistic, and know that's not going to happen.

I wait for a new VIRTUAL FIGHTER. VF was a must have Titel from SEGA like Shen Mue too, and they make Aliens.WHY ? Go back to the Roots and give us Titels that we waiting for.

Funny how Sonic and Alien have something in common: They look better before release than they actually are once you play them. I won't preorder either series anymore even though I did just a few years back. They just disappoint way to many times

@DoomSky Hope so. Sega's kind of on life support right now, both creatively and financially.

Did you see the 30 or so minute intro trailer? The game looks to reinvent the survival horror genre.

@lithus I lost all hope of a good Aliens game long before ACM. At this point I think waiting for a good one is like waiting for a good Sonic game just not going to happen.

You realize outside of Japan, no one really cares about JRPGs that don't have Final Fantasy in the title, right?

hina_ken

@Vexov Oh, man, what a PSO2 release would do to me right now. . .

Like assist in completely failing this semester, or possibly even just dropping out.

Man, I have been waiting to hear something about it for far too long now, and the F2P model was the worst news, but even that couldn't keep me away from PSO!

@godzilla_hiper They got taken over by a pachinko company who don't care about games. Yu Suzuki, Tetsuya Mizaguchi, Noryoshi Oba, Yuji Naka and many others have left, while Reiko Kodama is languishing in ano-man's land.

Smilebit, Overworks, UGA, Hitmaker...all gone...aside from Team Yakuza, only AM2 and Sonic Team remain, and they are shadows of their former selves.

lithus

I thought Lost Planet would have been the life vest from drowning in mediocrity but seems they are stuck in a perpetual arcade slump

relugus
relugus

@tmorri603 They used to have strong leaders, people like Yu Suzuki, Noryoshi Oba, Yuji Naka, Hideki Naganuma, Shun Arai, Tom Kalinske (Sega of America) Nick Alexander (Sega of Europe), Isao Okawa, Hayao Nakayama...now its full of suits and external journeyman devs.

BradBurns
BradBurns

@tmorri603 They have done some irreversible damage, I think. You have to be very careful with consumer trust which they haven't. And now Sega's been reduced to licensed sci-fi movie games and 1 or 2 internally developed games, if that.

This is probably one of the final phases of Sega's last days.

@allend406 It would make my year.

I would sell my X1 in a heartbeat to buy a new sega console.
(At least then It would get played, sans Dead Rising 3 there seems to be NO reason to even have 'one')

@zura_janai I hope Sega brings PS2 zero to NA/Europe

They said once only PC and Vita...i have a Vita now :-)

@ArchoNils2 Really? I dont remember that Sonic games looked better at pre-releases.

On other hand...Gearbox and Colonial Marines...YES.

@lithus What does Sega have to do with Lost Planet?

markranger
markranger

@BradBurns To be honest, they made a lot of B-games back-in-the-day, but also many great games. They don't seem to know what to do with their old properties and lack for ideas. I think they also lost a lot of their old talent. Maybe, they could just join up with one of the big three to revitalize their titles. If Konami can still make Castlevania and Metal Gear games, why can't Sega renew some of their old titles?

Even less reason since DR3 is coming to PC now (thanks capcom!)

VenkmanPHD

@sladakrobot @ArchoNils2 I will pre-order every sonic game untill the end of time.

Sure, they aren't what they used to be... and the whole bumbling fool they turned robotnik into needs to seriously STOP RIGHT NOW...

But I have fun with them. Certainly enough to warrant the initial purchase.

lithus
lithus

Yep, you're right. Lost Planet is Capcom, not Sega. Not sure what I was thinking. My bad

VenkmanPHD
VenkmanPHD

@normanislost I disagree, at least with the X1 I don't have to tweak the game in 40 differant ways just to get it to a point where it is playable.

Or plan B: Upgrade 4 differant peices of my hardware.

VenkmanPHD
VenkmanPHD

@Riomadoro Virtua Fighter needs to take lessons learned from it's crossover from DOA and allow for unlimited timed battles, and arenas that are REAL enviornments and not just squares you can fall out of.

If they did that, it would actually be on Par with DOA, might even surpass it since it's not dripping with sexism.

VenkmanPHD
VenkmanPHD

@sladakrobot @ArchoNils2 Furthermore, I think they need to let a western developer handle the next sonic game entirely.

Better story, improved focus on speed, and a much darker tone. THAT is what sonic needs. not this... happy go lucky childrens playtime bullcrap.

relugus
relugus

@VenkmanPHD @Riomadoro I think VF6 will have real environments; they bought Taka Arashi back so they might well bring back the environments of VF3 and beef them to DOA scale.

But they might do a Fighters Megamix 2, as that would include DOA characters alongside Hornet, Ryo, and other crossover guests.
