Not even recommendable to fans of Sega nostalgia

User Rating: 4.2 | Sega Classics Collection PS2
The European version of "Sega Classics Collection" consists of nine games in total: You get OutRun, Virtua Racing and Monaco GP; Golden Axe, Space Harrier and Columns; Fantasy Zone, Tant R and Bonanza Bros. Alien Syndrome, which was part of the collection in NTSC territories is inexplainably missing.
I was excited when first reading the titles included in the package. Having been a big Sega fan in the 90s, I was really looking forward to play gems like V.R. and Golden Axe again. But after loading up the first level of Golden Axe, I was shocked: Who decided to replace the 2D sprites with horrible polygons that, if nothing else, serve as a reminder of how video games looked a decade ago on the PS1? All the flair had been lost in translation; plus you get to witness some ugly collision detection problems and controller quirks (esp. when playing with the analog sticks).
All things considered, I can't really recommend this compilation to even the most hardcore Sega fans -- you don't get to play the beloved originals, but instead some lackluster remakes which have been "modernized" by adding some reallly ugly 3D graphics and sub-par remixes of the original tunes. At times I felt like playing a PlayStation 1 game (Golden Axe and Space Harrier look exceptionally atrocious) -- one really starts to wonder why Sega couldn't pack the untouched original titles onto this disc?
To put it in a nutshell: Don't spend your money on this lackluster compilation of pseudo-old school games. You'll be utterly disappointed.
