Okay, I know what you're thinking… "Great, another generic Sci-Fi shooter, thanks but no thanks". I know because I thought the same thing when I came across the Section 8 demo on Xbox Live Marketplace. After jumping into the multiplayer demo and losing several hours in the process, I was surprised to find that underneath the mediocre title (I mean, "Section 8"? Really?) and the generic space marine box art, is actually an incredibly deep and layered multiplayer experience. I have since purchased the game, available as of September 1, and I am far from disappointed. Let's begin with the most compelling reason to play "Section 8": Thirty-two person battlefield-style conquest multiplayer goodness. The movement of your character is a bit slower, think more like Halo: Combat Evolved and less like Unreal Tournament, however SouthPeak Games makes up for this with several stellar innovations. First, a sprint button of sorts, that, if you hold down long enough bursts you into a third person perspective run that can move you across the map faster than Usain Bolt, (at the expense of any shooting of course). Second, a short duration jump pack that will boost you into the third dimension adding an escape route if you find yourself in a bad situation (and you will), or to get the jump on an unsuspecting enemy. Perhaps the most dramatic addition to this game's multiplayer is the ability to spawn anywhere on the map, more or less, via an orbiting ship that shoots you out onto the battlefield at terminal velocity. You can even hold in the ship for a while and choose to squad jump, once enough of your squad is ready and land anywhere on the map in force, dramatically changing the pitch or tempo of the battle. In any case, next to SouthPeak's last big Xbox 360 release, the abysmal "Velvet Assasin", the developers have released the ultimate redemption. Stop reading this short, user-uploaded review and go watch some game play footage of Section 8… Better yet, just go buy it and thank me later.
