Scott Pilgrim is a joy and a frustration to play, but mostly the first one

User Rating: 8 | Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game PS3
I read the books. Watched the movie. So the only thing that was missing was the game and boy, what a wild ride it is with the whole franchise, and specially with the brutal but fun game.

GRAPHICS:
The game has a retro style to the graphics. I don't know if it is a homage to 8-bit or 16-bit, but is awesome nonetheless. The graphics are very colorfull and the game flows very well. 5/5

SOUND:
The music in the game is pure awesomeness. The tracks are also in a 8-bit/16-bit, and not only fit extremely well with the game, but are also really catchy and fun to listen to. 5/5

GAMEPLAY:
The game is a 'beat em up. You can play as one of 4 characters from the movie/novels: Scott, Kim, Steven or Ramona, and you can buy Knives from the PSN. They each play similar, but with a different set of moves, which make quite nice to play as different ones, but you will most likely stick to one character that you like the most. One notable feature to the game are the RPG stuff that the game has. You level up, and when you do you learn more moves and can enter stores to buy stuff to recover HP with the money the enemies drop after you kill them.

Now the gameplay itself is simple: move from left to right on the screen, killing everything on your way. You can attack with one of two buttons and jump, which means that there aren't a lot of combos, but the action is simple and fun. There really isn't that much more to talk about, since the game is very simple. The acton is very fun, but the challenge is brutal at times.

The game carrys suport for multilplayer up to 4 people. I myself have not tried the multilplayer, but it really seems chaotic but very fun, like the one in New Super Mario Bros Wii. And like that, there is no online play, which is a shame. When I say that the game is brutal, I'm not kidding. As a single player, the stages get unforgiving quite often. The enemies just come swarming at you and do quite some damage at once. Besides, as a tradition of the genre, you only have 3 lives and when you lose them all, you have to start over the stage, which absolutely bulls***. I have lost count on how many times I have died on the end of a stage, almost killing the boss, only to die there and have to restart the level over again.

The game is broken up into 7 stages, each of them with a boss at the end. This may seem a little short, but the game is so hard it will take you a lot of time to finish it anyways. Also, the bosses at the end of the stages are incredibly fun, each of them being different in their own. Theyh have different patters, different moves and such, and are all chalenging without being cheap and fun to battle.

But one thing that is just awesome of this game are the references to other games. There are a lot of parodies, and some can be really LOLs. To name a few, there are parodies of Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros. (1 and 2) and Guitar Hero. But there are much more and they are just a lot of fun.
3.5/5
