Scott Pilgrim vs the World brings old skool beat em ups back!
The combat in the game is enjoyable and the pace gets faster the farther along you go. The difficulty in the game is quite hard even on the easiest mode on your first playthrough. Playing with friends makes things a bit easier, but of course it could make it harder if your friends happen to get themselves killed often. By the end of the game you will probably be frustrated as the last level is long and if you die you'll have to start from the beginning. Like old school games, it feels worth it once you actually beat the game. Despite all the difficulty the first time, the game is noticeably easier a second time and extremely easy if you didn't reset your character's stats.
One thing that irked me a bit in the game is that when you purchase items you can't tell what they actually do until you purchase it so you may waste money on something that you don't need or want.
There are a couple of hidden stores that give you great bonuses like major stat increases, a 1-up, or a new move. There's a video rental shop in the first level of the game, but you have to pay Scott's late fees of $500 before you can rent anything. Before acquiring some knowledge about a certain infinite money trick, I found trying to pay back the debt to be immensely frustrating and repetitive. Without the use of that trick it takes a considerable amount of time to accumulate that much money, even when grinding at the spots with high money drops. Once you pay the video fees you can rent movies that increase your stats a lot more than most of the game's shops. Oh, and when you unlock it only the player who paid the fees can rent movies so if you're player 1 and you paid the fees, your friends cant rent anything unless they pay $500 first too.
This game is filled with references from other video games. The game is kind of short of course considering it's a downloadable game. There are a few catchy songs in the game that I enjoyed.
The game has a few glitch issues. When I originally got the game the game would load for excessively long times or freeze while trying to load or when I pressed the start button at the world map. There's also a glitch in the ninja garden stage where a ninja gets stuck off screen preventing you from continuing the level until you defeat it, but after playing this game for a third time I've found all these previous glitches to be absent. This might be due to a patch or something that I cannot explain.
One thing that I question about this game is why is doesn't have online co-op. I wouldn't have minded paying an extra five or ten dollars in order to play this with my PSN friends. It would have definitely upped the fun and replay value. All in all this is a great game that you need to check out. Also, rent the movie while you're at it.
