NOT a huge Saw fan, but this was fun anyway

Personally, I'm one of those people that liked the first Saw movie, then think they went downhill after that. I never bothered to watch past the 3rd one. I probably would have skipped this if not for some decent reviews in other places and the fact that Konami made it.

I had somewhat low expectations, thinking this would be a generic, but mildly entertaining horror game like Cursed Mountain or the like, to kill time for a day or two...but it really surprised me.

Let me point out first of all that though this looks and controls like many survival horror games out there, it's really not an action heavy game at all. I mean it makes Silent Hill look action packed. I think that may be a big part of why a lot of people are not liking it. I do agree that the combat is nothing exciting. it's a lot like the system used in Silent Hill Homecoming, but not quite as polished. it also becomes incredibly easy as soon as you get used to it. especially with the overly huge amount of weapons and trap spots around for you to easily take guys out with. but like I said, there really isn't that much combat going on anyway. it makes up a pretty small percentage of the game, so it's not really surprising that there isn't a super smooth combat system like RE5. it's just not that kind of game.

this game is all about puzzles and traps and you will spend about 90% of the time dealing with them. as much as I like a good monster/zombie blast-a-thon, I like a good puzzle so this worked out for me. the puzzles felt just right. they take a little work, but they're not too difficult or frustrating. the tough part usually involves the timed puzzles that will kill you instantly if you're not quick, but that was all part of the suspense for me.

the graphics aren't bad at all. typical unreal3 engine stuff, but pretty well designed. most of the time things looked surprisingly nice for being in a rundown asylum the whole time. good use of lighting and props/traps/etc made for a pretty dark, but nice atmosphere.

I'm sure not everyone will agree with all of this and I can see why it might not be for everyone, but it's worth at least renting to give it a chance. as usual with this type of game, it's pretty short too, so a rent would probably be for the best anyway...but who knows, you might end up liking it more than you think.
