Fast pace tennis with Pete Sampras at the helm and probably the best sound effects in this gene at the time.

Pete Sampras Tennis is a great game with a couple of friends, you can get a match going with four players thanks to the two extra ports on the cartridge itself. However I never played with four players let alone two players. Playing in one player mode can be tuff. Getting passed Potter is okay but I keep struggling to get passed Delgardo.

The controls are simple, you serve with one button one and button two you hit. Moving around the court to get to the ball can be tuff so with button three you can jump, which is a little boost to get to that part of the court. Not forgetting with the directional pad, down is to dink it over the net and up gives you a power shot. Be warned know, it is simple but to master the controls but to beat opponents does take a lot of work to learn.

The best part of the game to me has to be the sound effects. The umpire keeps score, you hear “out” and the crowd sounds are fantastic. In fact I would say that Sampras Tennis has one of the best sound effects of that time period. But one of my favourite sound effects has to be when one of the woman tennis players hit the ball. There is something sexy about that sound!

The graphics are also pretty good for the time, it might have been better but still for the Genesis they where pretty good. The curves on the ladies are of top quality and with the sound effects… o no, not there again! The detail of the crowd, the pitches, umpire, judges and ball-boys/girls are all really good, certainly a well made game.

There is a reply value there and it should keep anyone entertained for an hour during the day. Keep up the practice because you’re going to need it.
