Is it good that the SR series "jumped the shark"?

With aliens and stuff?
Or should've kept its thug theme all the way through?

Can't really jump the shark, you don't plan on coming down.

I think the main problem is a bad balance of lackluster writing, losing half their cinematic team, wasting their money on pornstars and prowrestlers for voicework, and advertising ALL the goofy stuff without leaving anything left for the player to find. that and all their dlc was stuff that clearly was locked on disc like generic costumes and a few guns.

While I thouroughly enjoyed Saints Row The Third, even with its toilet humor and all around lackluster story, I found it almost likw watching an episode of South Park. Which is fine if they hadnt built this series on zany gameplay with a hefty touch of serious tone in their story cinematics. It was TOO zany for its namesake.
I loved SR2 for its crazy missions, and the pretty decent story, it was a great mix.
In the end though, SR3 is the first game since SR1 and 2 , AND GTA SA that has made me want to replay, and 100% multiple times because everything is fun.

Overall, the whole experience felt less worthy than its predecessor. However, I prefer what they did to the thug crap of the first game. Street gangs were played out years ago.

After posting that message earlier I threw in SR2 and started a new game and well, im 8 hours in with Ronin and Brotherhood stories done, about 4 activites fully complete and there is still so much to do. Just looking at the menus and all the activites, you have FUZZ, Snatch, Fight Club, Demo Derby, Races, Septic Avenger, Trail Blazing, Insurance Fraud Escort, Drug Trafficking, Hitman and Chop Shop, you have Streaking Fire Fighting, Taxi, Hostage, Tow Truck, Ambulance, Tagging, Blackjack, Poker, Flashing, Store Hold Ups, Mugging, Poker, Streaking, Drive by, and the ratings were there for everything you did, not just challenges. The customization is better, ten fold, the store variety is better and the icing is the production value. Its great. Every activity has a cutscene opening, as well as every mission, and Stronghold, the story is actually good, pretty gritty with that touch of funny.
All in all I did not realize HOW much SR TT downsized and downgraded in content and quality in areas from Sr2 after having had such a break between playing the two.
I love the VTOL and Steelport was a decently cool city, but after today, I feel that Saints Row 2 is my San Andreas of this generation. It had secret areas, mountain outskirts, a good city/ area and was just fun. Now I am honestly skeptical about SR4

I think they should have just dropped the "Saints Row" from the name and created a brand new series, a sci-fi/Anime/slapstick comedy sandbox. I mean, it's obviously what they want to do. Get it out of their system, maybe pick up the Saints Row title again when they're ready for more dark humoured gangster stuff.
I mean, I'm not saying SRTT is bad, because it's a great game, it's just too tonally different. Saints Row 1/2 and Saints Row The Third are apples and oranges, it felt like Saints Row in name only. And Saints Row 4 sounds like even more of a departure.
