Respect Bar, SR1, and SR2

Alright... believe it or not, I have NO clue how the respect bar works.

My first two playthroughs of SR1... I did all sorts of side activities and such... and so whenever I went to do a mission or take over a stronghold... I never had any trouble!

I've played through the game this third time... and I keep hitting the point where it says "Earn more respect to do this mission"... I KNOW how to get respect... activities and killing other gangs...

Question is... HOW much respect do I need to do missions? Also... respect goes down by itself, I take it? I did all the escort missions (Los Carnales)... and got at least Respectx5... then spent at least 3 hours just driving around the city... and it seemed like when I re-loaded the game after this downtime... my respect bar was at half... with no x5 or x2 or ANYTHING!

So... how does respect work (a simple text search for "respect" in any of the SR FAQs comes up blank in regards to these questions.

Next question... does respect work the same way (however that is) in SR2?

In SR2, as long as you have 1 bar of respect, you can do a story mission or a stronghold mission. And respect is much easier to earn in SR2. You can earn respect simply by driving in the wrong lane of traffic or doing powerslides in a car, so yeah, it's much easier. The only thing that seems odd in SR2 is that you can have your Respect bar up to say 6 for example & if you do a mission or stronghold mission, it goes back down to zero. You would think they would only take away 1 level of respect but apparently not. But again, since it's so freaking easy to earn respect in SR2, it's not a huge issue.

Yes, I did save... I'd gotten a few CDs by exploring the map... so I saved.
