First off, this my first review of any game I have ever played, so forgive me for not adhering to some universal norm on reviewing, it's not intentional so please bear with me. I recently picked up this game primarily based upon the impressions I've read from player reviews. However, I got way more than I bargained for in the department of developing a truly custom class character. I primarily want to focus in on this aspect because such trifle matter such as the bad camera, voice acting, bugs, and lack of story is replete in almost any review one can read, yet for I suppose an average gamer like me couldn't really comprehend the extreme amount of effort and insight that is required to produce a character that can endure all the way through to final difficulty setting. I suppose the fact that many people would say "it's kind of like Diablo" would be lost on a guy like me.
This game is more than just taking a few skill points every time you level up and placing them in your favorite skill or attribute you want to enhance. Trust me, after 30 hours of game play I've learned the hard way and had to get expert advice from the Wiki community site in order to build a certain type of character for my Shadow Warrior. Even though there are currently, and may sadly, only be 6 characters to chose from on the consoles, it none the less requires a great amount of consideration to determine the kind of player your class will be. For instances, the shadow warrior can be a sort of invisible ninja, a summoner or a support player who buffs the party during online parties or local co-op. That's just a couple possible builds that sounds very easy. However, you also have to take into account the creativity that is required in order to get these builds. These complexities are further mollified by making sure you don't learn too many Combat Arts or else there will be negative consequences and on the other hand if you try learn to many skills and don't spread them out perfectly then you run the risk of not being a master of anything. Moreover, the right equipment, namely rare armor sets, along with the proper amount and types of sockets placed into the available slots also determines the type of character effectiveness in this game. There are so many variables into making a long last character type that it hurts my head think about it.
I can see how some people who pick up this game for 10 to 20 hours or for a rent can walk away and think they've gain a valid impression of the game. However, I've spent 30 hours just getting used to this games depth and mechanics. I couldn't underscore enough that if you want to play through the final difficulty, since more are unlock as you complete the main campaign and it restarts on a progressively harder mode, you will need to do some research. Respectively, if you are more mentally endowed then me , or simply have the time, there are a lot of things still waiting to be discovered in building characters. In fact, some builds are so rare they are being translated from German to English, lol.
If you are someone who likes a challenge and creativity with some time on your hands then this is a deep character system in a truly massive world that you can spend a lot of time in and possibly make discovers no one has yet made, then look no further than this game. On the other hand, if your more into great voice acting, great story telling flashy yet simple combat, then this game is really not for you. This game takes game-playing to new levels.
