Rygar is a fun, easy, short-lived adventure...

Rygar has sat on my shelf since shortly after it was released. Having played the original as a kid, mostly unsuccessfully I had been excited about a current-gen remake.

The story is simple: evil kidnaps the princess and you, the warrior go to save her. The cutscenes can be a little painful as the voice acting is dry, even wooden. But luckily Tecmo doesn't bog you down with this as their only a very small portion of the game.

The gameplay involves you controlling your weapon called the diskarmor. Their are three types that you'll get in due time as well as a few other power-ups. Part of the appeal here is that Rygar's world has various (if not simple) puzzles for you to explore through the use of these abilities. On this same note, the controls can be stiff once you find yourself executing a combo in the wrong direction.

Visually this game is no doubt appealing. Even though it was released in 2002 and that shows a bit through character models, Rygar lives in an interesting world. It resembles ancient Greece quite a bit, full of statues and no doubt character design of some of the bosses (Typhon) will make you want more.

While no doubt this is a fun game, easy on even normal mode there is virtually no replay value here. You do unlock harder difficulties for completing the game but once you've been through once, you won't really find a need to revisit.
