There are better Rune Factories than this.

A key issue impacting this review is the ability to upgrade your home. If this is important to you, consider this review. If it is not, another review may be more useful for you.

Unlike in other Rune Factory games (such as Tree of Tranquility) the ability to funnel your income into pimping out your house is almost non-existent. You are permitted to stay in a pre-built building that can only be made slightly larger and which you do not own. You can only purchase cooking/blacksmith etc equipment, which has only one visual style per 'quality' level - and as you will need the best quality for creating high level items, you essentially have little to no choice as to decorating your home. Neither the interior nor exterior decor can be changed.

You can create decorative items but these items can only be placed in one room of your house and you cannot choose their location.

If 'home building' is important to you then you will find Rune Factory: Tides to be very unsatisfying. What little can be done is easily achieved before the third seasonal island is discovered and after that there seems little point in continuing.

If you enjoy the characters more than the home-building, there are a lot of enjoyable NPCs on offer. The monsters will be familiar to any Rune Factory fan and combat is essentially more of the same.

If you're locked in isolation for a few months and really need something to keep you sane, you could do worse than Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny.
