In the beginning there was Rugby '05, the first imprint of the sport for the Xbox, and it made you happy because you didn't have to wait until the next time you were lucky enough to run across coverage of an international game on cable tv. You could step into the cleats of your favorite team anytime.

Then you tried to get the hang of the complex controls, and you cussed and wondered if you would ever figure out how to put some points on your side of the board.

This year, that futile cycle is over.

The game is redone in a player-friendly version that brings most maneouvers down to one button and one arrow, tops. The tutorial is quick and simple. Soon I was scooting around on the field like I belonged there. Passing and running are very important. Unlike American football, you hardly ever stop moving-- keep your eyes open and learn to work with every player on the team. Work hard, don't give up, and the joy of smashing the daylights out of anything in the way will soon be yours.
