Fri, 22 Feb 2013 13:21:22 -0800 Got into a fight with a friend http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-26014121 One night a work compadre of mine invited me over to his place for some brewskies and I obliged his invitation. The evening started out innocently enough. While kicking back in his living room sipping the suds I listened wearily to my inebriated friend spin fables of his past life as a janitor at some sweat shop in Beijing. Out of boredom I began scanning the drab room in a desperate attempt to take my mind off of the endless ramblings of a drunkard. My gaze caught that of a dark haired miniature poodle nestled cozily next to a 250 GB model Xbox 360.

This particular poodle was lovingly named Cheese Swindler on account of it's obsessive love for copious amounts of chedder cheese, and for the ruthless and unethical tactics it would use to obtain said cheese. So me being the animal lover that I am get up out of my chair and with beer in hand, make my way over to the precious little cuddle bug and start petting it. My intoxicated friend wasn't too happy about this. He took this as me ignoring him which I kind of was to be fair.

So the ass grabs a tv remote that was sitting snugly by his side and whips it at me (I'm assuming to get my attention). Now being that this sad sap of a loser was completely sh!tfaced out of his mind and couldn't see straight, he completely misses his intended target and instead knocks the beer bottle free from my grasp, which in turn spills all over his 250 GB model Xbox 360. Miraculously, this ends up some how being my fault. He begins accusing me of being a Sony fanboy, of orchestrating this whole event in order to destroy his Xbox 360. Insane, I know.

So while we are having our shouting match, unbeknownst to the both of us, my beer had begun to bleed into the Xbox's ciruitry causing it to spark and smoke, hiss and sputter. Poor little Cheese Swindler whom as previously mentioned was snuggled up by the console, was apparently sitting too close and her tail had caught fire. While this is going on my friend comes at me with a silver candle stick and begins bludgeoning me on the head multiple time causing severe internal brain hemorrhaging and temporary blindness. One strike was so hard infact that it sent ripples down my spinal cord, fracturing my left testicle.

At this point Cheese Swindler was completely engulfed in flames, and in a fright fueled panic, began sprinting around the room in circles setting pieces of furniture and carpet ablaze. Sensing the impending doom that was about to befall us, I quickly arose from my feeble position and kicked the now crazed socialite sqaure in the d*ck, instantly incapacitating him. With what little remaining strength I had left in me I hoisted him up onto my shoulder and threw him out a nearby window to safety. I then dropped to my knees. The sheer agonising pain that reverberated from my fractured testicle was now too great and began to consume my mind.

I could feel the heat from the flames on my back now. It wouldn't be long now before I faced my maker. "This isn't the end yet. No siree, I swear on the life of my shattered testicle this is not how I will go out" I said to myself. And so with one final push, I dove out the window and land violently in the dirt. It wasn't long after that the fire department and ambulance arrived. They carried me off as I was in shock and hysterics, mumbling gibberish about tales of harpies and unicorns. It was a dark time but I've since recovered.

Wed, 23 Jan 2013 07:48:32 -0800 Found a review that you should seriously read http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-26003439 Many of you probably know that I am in love with the video game Nier. It's one of my favorite games of all time. You also probably know that I'm an incredibly lazy and sh*tty writer, and because of that I have failed you. I have failed all of you. I have failed Nier. I have failed in the sense that I have been unable to effectively convince you all to go out and play this masterpiece. You see Nier is a very complex game, one so complex that me being the simpleton that I am have an extremely difficult time translating into words just what it is that makes this game so special.

Being aware of this sad truth, I have sought for ways to better help you understand the utter magificence that is Nier and so I went searching. I sifted through countless videos, forums, and reviews, and finally came across a brilliant piece of writing - a user review, but this is far far far from your ordinary user review. It is an important document. It is, simply put, the most detailed (and spoiler free!) breakdown of Nier ever put on the internet.

Not only is it wonderfully written, it's author (who goes by the name of mrklarryd) discusses every single flaw and strength of Nier in vivid detail. He gives both deep insight into each character and also some real world history surrounding the game. His perspective brought to light certain things about the game that I didn't even notice myself, and I played through it like 4 f*cking times. In his review he manages to achieve what every "professional game critic" totally and miserably failed at. He delves into the very essence of Nier, and defines just what it is that makes the game so special, and he does it all without spoiling important details!

Now the review is very long, but I implore you to find the time to read it. There's also an interesting bit towards the end where he convincingly explains why this misunderstood classic was doomed to receive mixed reviews. Here is the review for your reading pleasure - http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/960449-nier/reviews/review-142619

So, what do you think?

Thu, 01 Nov 2012 05:53:36 -0700 Discussing some games I've played in 2012 http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25997533 Haven't wrote a blog in a while, I'm bored, wide awake, so the time has cometh. Seeing as how my taste in every thing is pretty much god's word I know you guys have been anxiously awaiting something like this. Wait no longer.

A few of the 2012 games I have played

Kingdoms of Amalur - Anyone who spends more than 30 hours with this game should be able to clearly see that it is complete ass. I thought it was great at first but appearances can be very deceiving, like some hot babe you meet for the first time and instantly want to marry but after spending time with her you realise she only wants to cut your balls off and feast on your soul like a parasite. KoA has a big, colorful world that's very easy on the eyes, a nifty combat system and some very cool ideas on character progression. What could go wrong? Everything.

The world while good looking is completely lifeless and it's filled with nothing but robotic NPCs who do absolutely nothing but stand around gazing into an empty void like souless abominations, and incredibly bland fetch quests where you're essentially doing the exact same four or five tasks ad nauseum. The story is typical fantasy garbage, the same sh*t you've heard since you were born, only much less interesting. All we're left with is a sleek combat and progression system, which is totally undermined by the laughable difficulty. Summoning a huge meteor that rapes everything on screen or twirling around crazy flaming chakrams like a badass ninja on crack are awesome at first, but they lose their novelty when you realise the enemies are basically defenceless infants who cower before your god-like abilities. The game just sucks all around.

Diablo 3 - Probably my most highly anticipated game of all time. Diablo was one of the very first RPGs I ever played, and also one of the first online multiplayer games I ever played, so you can imagine how much I creamed my jeans over that game back in the day. Diablo 2 then came and pretty much had the same effect on me. For quite a long while I was immersed 100% into these two amazing worlds, probably over 1000 hours worth I'd say, easily. So you kind of get my hype for D3. When I first booted it up I was sure Jesus Christ himself was going to come exploding through my computer monitor. Well, that didn't exactly happen.

Fundamentally speaking it's great. It plays great, looks great, sounds great, has all of the qualities any big AAA blockbuster should have. It's story is... there. The character classes all play differently and each is fun in their own right. The streamlining of character building didn't bug me like it did a lot of others because Blizzard did a great job with it. You unlock new attacks and upgrades at a good steady pace which never allows your journey through all four difficulties to grow tiresome.

However, the game's biggest problem and what ultimately makes it a disappointment is once you reach max level, there is essentially nothing else left to do with that character class. You unlock everything at 60 and reach your character's full potential abilities wise, so there is never any reason to experiment by making a new character of the same class. It's either start a new class, or continue grinding endlessly with the same character. Diablo 3 really doesn't have any end game content, which makes it vastly inferior to the infinitely replayable Diablo 2. So what we have learned here today is that on it's own Diablo 3 stands as a quality title, certainly worthy of your cash and time. As a Diablo game, it's a disappointment.

Borderlands 2 - This game is a f*ckin blast, and not much else needs to be said. The gunplay is about as good as what you would find in most straight up shooting games, and the RPG elements don't intrude on the shooting action yet they also stand on their own and help to make Borderlands into a highly addictive and fun experience. The best part about it is the humor, and there's tons of it throughout the duration of the game. What really caught me off gaurd is that with all of the goofiness and hilarity, the game's story does take some slightly darker and more serious turns later on, and somehow Gearbox did an excellent job of making these serious moments not feel out of place amongst all the ridiculousness. That's more than what can be said for a lot of other shooters, which take themselves too seriously and end up being unintentionally funny (Gears of War, lookin at you!).

The game's ability to mix all of this absurdist humor into a genuinely gripping story (by video game standards) is pretty much unparalled and is one of Borderlands 2's greatest strengths. It's villain, Handsome Jack, is pretty much the perfect personification of this very strength. There are many moments where he will say something that has you laughing your ass off, only to immediately turn around and do something so despicably evil and vile that you just hate him. Then he will say something else funny and totally inappropriate within the context of the horrible things he's done. And he's just one memorable character in a cast of memorable characters. Borderlands 2 may be a co-op game first and foremost, but it works good as a singleplayer game all the same, unlike it's predecessor which NEEDED to be played cooperatively. This is my current GoTY. Play it, unless you hate fun.

Some games I've been playing recently that are not from 2012

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West - Enslaved suffers from the "Condemned 2 effect". The first 75% of the game or so is pure video game excellence. The pacing is masterfully done, the two lead characters are easy to fall in love with and their relationship is an engaging one. The gameplay is simple but fun and provides quite a few exciting moments. Enslaved is kind of like Uncharted only with a science fiction setting and story and characters that you actually give a crap about.

Unfortunately it does lose steam in the final acts and ultimately end with a whisper rather than a bang (this is the aforementioned Condemned 2 effect, and I HATE it!). This is indeed disappointing, but just like with Condemned 2 what came before the crap was so damn good it's nearly impossible to deny the game it's accolades. Overall it's a great experience.

Batman Arkham City Game of the Year Edition BOOM! - And here is the biggun. If you've just been skimming through this blog post ignoring a lot of text up to this point, whatever, but heed the words I'm about to tell you as it's gospel. I Have often stated that I consider Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime to be the only two perfect games in existence. Literally no flaws in them of any kind to be found. Just pure. untouched. perfection. I'm sure it doesn't come as a surprise that I consider them to be the two greatest games ever created by man, which is a fact. I'm not just saying that. I don't say things just to say them. This is a simple truth, no matter what your own mind is telling you.

You need to know this, so you understand just how amazing the fact is that Batman Arkham City actually approaches these two timeless masterpieces of masterpieces in quality. It actually comes close, closer than any other game that has attempted such a feat. It's attention to detail, it's insatiable desire to be perfect at every single little god damn thing it does calls to memory the previously two mentioned games. Arkham City does literally nothing wrong. It's a freak of nature, like Kate Upton or Megan Fox. Every pour in it's skin, every hair protruding from it's flawless flesh, is perfect. The pacing is perfect. The gameplay is perfect. The music is perfect. The atmosphere is perfect. F*cking perfect.

The only thing Arkham City doesn't have that perhaps holds it back from RE4's and Metroid Prime's unattainable level of excellence, is it's place in time. Back when I played RE4 and MP I was much younger, and at the time I didn't know it was possible for games to be that freakishly good. Years have gone by and I've grown more immune to the spectacle in games. I've played a lot of good to great games and built up a resistance. I became a tougher critic. The fact that Arkham City was able to completely catch me off gaurd, effortlessly crush my inner video game critic, and transport me into a world of video game bliss, is astounding.

Other games I've played and am currently playing that I'm too lazy to talk a lot about

LIMBO - I thought this one was great. It's got one of the more memorable artstyles in recent memory, and I just love it's atmosphere. This game however, like Enslaved, suffers from a bit of the Condemned 2 effect. The earlier parts where you're running from the spider and other such stuff were brilliant, but before long it becomes entirely about physics puzzels, which I'm not a huge fan of. B+

Cryostasis - Great storytelling, atmosphere, and some creative gameplay elements make it worth checking out, but it runs like complete sh*t.

Alan Wake - Game looks and plays nice, and like the above two games also has a fantastic atmosphere about it. I wish it took a lesser approach to action though, as it gets tiresome fighting the same 3 or 4 enemy types repeatedly. It would have definitely benefitted from a slower, more horror-ish pace, like Silent Hill Downpour. Which brings me to...

Silent Hill Downpour - Straight up classic survival horror. Lots of exploration, limited resources, seaching for keys and items, sh*tty combat, and wonderfully tense pacing. This is the type of game I have been waiting to play for years.

Mass Effect - Mediocre gameplay, good world, story, and characters. The theme is also pretty catchy. It seems like a good game, albiet a highly overrated one.

Fallout 3 - It's kind of like Skyrim only not quite as good. I do really like how your actions influence the course of the game and story though. That's very refreshing compared to other games in this day and age where you're on a set path.

That's all the typing I can stomach right now. For those of you who stuck with this to the end, your reward is babes.

Sat, 30 Jun 2012 03:36:30 -0700 Cryostasis is f*cking evil http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25988310 Cryostasis-1.jpg

Cool game overall, but it's been a f*cking nightmare trying to get it running properly (and even now it still runs like sh*t). First off, after I downloaded the POS I couldn't even get it to start up. I would click on the icon and it would literaly do nothing. After some internet browsing I found out that I needed to download a specific version of PhysX to get the god forsaken game to even run, and I say specific because it turns out that the newest version doesn't work with it, which I found out later after hours of frustration. So I finaly download the proper driver and get the game to boot up, and when I start playing it's running at one frame per second.

Now this I will admit was my own fault because I didn't select the proper video card to run it (my laptop has two, one integrated the other dedicated). So after another hour of frustration I realised I needed to switch to the dedicated graphics card. Afterwards it finaly became half ass playable, but the framerate would still randomly drop from 60 fps to 20 and below. I literaly spent more time tinkering with the graphics settings than I have playing the game. It's most playable when I have advanced PhysX turned off but it still chugs pretty bad during scriped events and when enemies appear. Ridiculous,,,

So long story short, the game was optimized by a bunch of retarded lab monkeys. I've even seen guys in forums claiming to own $1200 rigs and still having trouble running it at a steady framerate. This really sucks because it does seem like an otherwise great game. It's insanely atmospheric when it's actually working and the story seems like it has a lot of potential. I'm just not sure if I want to put up with the constant technical problems to see it through till the end. I'll continue tinkering with the settings and hope that I can get running decently because it seems like an awesome game.

There's my drunken rant. Time for bed!

Sat, 09 Jun 2012 02:59:16 -0700 BEHOLD, my new gaming machine! http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25986367 And it's not a desktop PC.

I know it doesn't look or sound like much at first glance but turns out that this thing is quite the beastly beast and is untoucheable at it's price range. I'm no tech wiz when it comes to computer stuff but based on everything I've read about this laptop (mainly from the feedback section of that page) it comes with two cards, one is integrated the other dedicated. The integrated one is activated most of the time for basic sh!t to save battery life, and then the 6650M video card kicks in for more intensive things like gaming. These two cards can be crossfired which is where the beastliness comes from.

Supposedly it can pretty much run any game you can throw at it like BF3, Skyrim, Crysis, and most importantly Diablo 3 which is the whole point of me buying the laptop in the first place.

I also ordered a couple accessories to go along with it...

here

and here

I bought the mouse for obvious reasons (touchpads f*cking suck). People have complained about heat problems while gaming so I figure the cooling pad will hopefully solve that problem. Well there you have it, the Chuck Norris of bargain laptops. It should get to me on Monday. D3 awaits!

Thu, 10 May 2012 22:50:18 -0700 Life, losing interest in gaming, Friday Night Lights, and other stuff http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25983365 Sad_gamer.jpg

Well it's been close to a month since I've so much as put a game in my PS3, and I still don't have any desire to do so. I think it's a combination of things really: Being addicted to a new tv show, job hunting, parties and friends, etc. I just don't feel compelled to pick up a controller or even visit Gamespot much anymore. It kind of sucks in a way, but I guess people just grow out of stuff. I think another reason for my new found lack of interest is what games have turned into. They're just becoming far too cinematic these days, and if I want to experience something cinematic, video games is the last place I go.

There's just no replacement for real life actors, and I wish developers would get that through their f*cking heads. Games are meant to be played, not watched, ok? I can forgive certain games for this (like GoW, because it's sense of epicness and greek mythology is pretty much unparalleled in the gaming world. And the sensless gore is pretty cool to ) but sh*t like Uncharted? I liked it better when it was called Indiana Jones! So there's that, but I just think the main reason is I've been too busy trying to improve my quality of life.

find-a-job-australia-1.jpg

It's been a few months since I got laid off from my last job (I was a welder in some sh*t factory), and have been foolishly trying to hold on to a care free life of constant booze and sex ever since. That hasn't worked out so well, so I'm finaly trying to get things straightened out, looking for a decent paying job, slow down the drinking (I've been failing at this so far), etc.

I got a few possibilities. One particular company wants me to travel around the USA fixing up Dollar General stores. I like the idea of getting to see new places outside of bumf*ck Iowa but the pay isn't as much as I'd like. Another place only requires me to drive 20 something minutes and I'll get paid $14 an hour starting out. Not bad, but I'd be stuck in the same damn place. I have a few other offers, but nothing as interesting as the first two.

friday-night-lights.jpg

A brief review

Aside from the job hunts and partying I've been watching Friday Night Lights, one of the greatest tv shows of all time, and I just recently finished it. I'll just lay it flat out on the table...

Season 1 - f*cking amazing. Some of the best television I have ever watched and one of the greatest tv show seasons ever. The performances are incredibly realistic, the characters are well written, and the story arcs are as compelling as they possibly could be. I like the direction as well. Normally I'm not a fan of the shaky cam, but in this show it fits. This is also the longest season of the series, thank god. 10/10

Season 2 - This season is considered by many to be the bastard child of the series. Me? I actually really enjoyed it. There are a couple ridiculous story arcs that feel completely out of place and the "finale", if you want to call it that, left a lot to be desired. To make matters worse season 3 starts almost entirely from scratch, ignoring 90% of the events that took place in this season. These things ultimately hold season 2 back from greatness, but there's still a lot to like here. The performances and characters are just as compelling as ever, and there's still plenty of great moments to keep you invested. The characters from season 1 that you loved are all still here. 7/10

Season 3 - This one kind of gets off to a bumpy start (much like season 2), but it does get better and is an overall improvement over the last season. I didn't like the fact that most of season 2 was completely ignored here. I could understand ignoring certain story arcs (like the stupid murder plot for example) but there was still some good material there that should have been caried over. It just feels so disjointed in the beginning. But like I said, it gets much better and eventually returns to top form. 8/10

Season 4 - Loved this one. My two favorite characters Tim Riggins and Matt Saracen have some of their absolute best moments from the entire show in this one season. Hell, some of the best episodes of the entire series are contained in this season. I only have a couple gripes. One being that I didn't really care for the new East Dillion characters. I wont say they're bad but... eh, I'll just save it for my season 5 rant. The other complaint is J.D McDouche. I didn't like him in season 3 and I sure as hell didn't like him in this one. I gotta thank the writers though for making my hatred of him in season 3 totally justified. Btw, the finale is EPIC! 9/10

Season 5 - This is hands down my least favorite season of the entire show. I know a lot of fans will tell me to f*ck off (namely champ) but I just wasn't feeling it this time around. For starters, almost all of my favorite characters are absent from this season (save for a few meager guest appearences, which were unsurprisingly the best moments of the whole season). What we're mainly left with aside from the returning greats like Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, Billy Riggins, and Buddy, are the newer East Dillion characters introduced last season. Now like I briefly mentioned in the previous paragraph, they arn't BAD characters, they just don't at all hold a candle to the originals.

I liked Vince and his relationship with his father was a great story arc (probably the best of the whole season) but those moments are fleeting. Luke is likeable at times but kind of dull. Jess is ok, but forgettable. Becky is just as annoying as she was last season. Julie Taylor was good in Season 1 and she had some great scenes with Matt, but her character became annoying in later seasons and here she is just an unbearable b*tch. At this point you're probably thinking I hated this season but I actually did enjoy some of it. It had it's moments and the biggest saving grace for me is the series finale, which was probably the best finale of the whole series. It wrapped up everything perfectly and was packed with many hilarious and memorable moments. 6.5/10

The verdict
- Overall this is a fantastic show and I urge any self respecting human being to check it out (even if you're not a fan of football). It can be pretty uneven and disjointed at times, but the sum of it's parts adds up to an incredible experience. If anything, just check out the first couple episodes of season 1. I promise you that you will be hooked.

In the closing of this blog...

I wont be posting in System Wars much anymore. I'll still pop up from time to time but like I said in the first couple paragraphs, I'm losing interest in this sh*t. Gaming has evolved into crap and SW is pretty much stuck in a rut at this point, with rejects like ispeakfact, phonemug, loosingENDS, ForzaGearsFace, and Pinnacle posting the same crap over and over and over. It just gets so tiresome. I gotta give you guys credit though for sticking it out so long and putting up with their crap. You dudes got souls of steel and I have enjoyed arguing with you! So in parting (kind of, like I said I will still show up on occassion) I leave you all with a picture of me completely drunk off my ass.

Tim f*cking Riggins of Friday Night Lights fame

I didn't think this guy could possibly get any cooler after season 1, but lo and behold after finishing season 4 it has been confirmed - Tim "god" Riggins joins the pantheon of elite tv show characters. He's the dude that just about every man on Earth wants to be: Cocky, badass, parties too much, funnyman, gets all kinds of hot ass, town hero and highschool football star, complete with a heart of gold. The man is my hero and has inspired me to not give a f*ck.

The episode that sealed the deal for me was the season 4 finale, when he

Wed, 25 Apr 2012 01:55:51 -0700 Addicted to Friday Night Lights (tv show) http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25981523 So I recently subscribed to Netflix and immediately started browsing through the television show selection. Overall I must say it's a pretty piss poor selection they have going there, I mean just pathetic. Two shows however caught my eye, those being Friday Night Lights and Twin Peaks (heard great things about both of these). So I decided to give FNL a go first. Well, it was about three days ago that I watched the very first episode, and tonight I have just finished the entire first f*cking season.

It's a pretty standard show starting out. Cliched, predictable, whatever. It was the performances and characters that I found interesting, and they were enough to keep me watching past the first episode. Before long I started to fall in love with them. It's really the writing of the characters and their interaction with one another that makes this show great. Mr. and Mrs. coach, Matt Saracen, Smash, Jason Street, Tyra Collette, Landry Clarke, and even the sleazy Buddy Garrity are all compelling characters with real relationships and obstacles.

I enjoy watching coach Taylor and his wife constantly bicker and argue. I enjoy watching the naive but good hearted Matt Saracen rise from underdog to football star. I enjoy watching Jason Street try to come to terms with his paralysis and finding his place in the world. I enjoy staring at Tyra's fine ass. And then there's Tim Riggins... I didn't think much of the dude at first, but he quickly became one of if not my absolute favorite character on the show. The dude is a hardass, ladies man, potentially alcoholic, sometimes straight up prick but always cool character and one that's incredibly difficult to dislike (once you see a bit of his softer side, anyways).

The story arcs also become better and more interesting as the show goes on. At the rate I'm going I will probably have all five seasons watched before the end of next month, and I'm looking forward to every damn minute of it. Not bad for a football show. I highly recommend it!

Thu, 19 Apr 2012 17:59:27 -0700 Any David Cronenberg fans in da house? http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25980781 Two new trailers for his upcoming film Cosmopolis were released today, and it looks absolutely amazing. Here they are...

And if you haven't seen the teaser, here it is as well...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCFB-WPe9Ic

This film marks the epic return of classic Cronenberg style, aka, lots of weird f*cked up sh*t, and what a glorious return it will be. Now I know what you may be thinking, "but that giant douche Robert Pattinson is starring in it. Movie is ruined". To that I say, give the dude a chance. If there's one director out there who can change Pattinson from lame p*ssy to respectable actor, it's David Cronenberg.

The guy has always had a serious knack for picking great actors - James Woods, Viggo Mortensen, Michael Ironside, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Weller, Vincent Cassel, Jeremy Irons, Jude Law, etc. So if Cronenberg sees something in Pattinson, I trust that he made the correct decision. Anyways, movie is gonna be awesome. Who else is pumped?

Thu, 01 Mar 2012 05:49:08 -0800 A look back on all of the 2011 games I've played http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25974689 It's been quite the while since I've posted in the Shake-Box (that is hence forth what my awesome blog shalt be referred to as). I figure it's time to knock the dust off and start rambling about stuff, that is until I lose interest again and stop blogging for another few months. Now originally I wanted to make a 2011 GOTY blog entry similar to what I did back in 2010 but then thought to myself "nah, too much work". Taking the easy way out I've just decided to name off all the games I played this past year and give my feelings on each one. Hell I'll even post a score for ya. So here goes, mind blowing and factual opinions incoming...

Crysis 2

You may find this hard to believe but back when this game was approaching release I was one of the most vocal of the haters. Why you may ask? I don't know, just needed something to b!tch about. Anyways, after lambasting this game to hell and back and getting into countless arguments with AAllxxjjnn (he was one of Crysis 2's biggest supporters at the time) I finaly decided to actually watch some gameplay videos of it. Needless to say I was pretty taken aback by it and bought the game on day one. Scratching your head over that story? Yeah me too.

It was somewhere in the second mission I believe that I started to fall in love with this game. Being that I've been a console peasant all my life I never really got to play a FPS quite like Crysis 2 before, ie, one that gives you options and space to move around plotting your attacks as opposed to guiding you down tiny halls and pathways from start to finish.

It's just a stupendous game any way you slice it though. The graphics and sound are top of the line, the music is epic enough to get your blood pumping (the production value in general is pretty staggering), the gameplay options are fun and diverse. Not as good as Crysis 1? Don't give a f***. Badass game is still badass.

Originally I gave Crysis 2 a 9.5 but lowered the score to 9.0 after spending more time with the multiplayer. It's a blast to play and it kicks the s*** out of CoD, but the netcode is just horrendous. It feels more like a beta than an actual finished multiplayer componant. What's worse is Crytek never polished it up. So yeah, still, a 9.0 for this amazing game.

Alice: Madness Returns

Now this game, this game right here, this little guy ^, had thee potential to be one of the greatest games ever made. I'm not even joking. Everything was in place for this monstrosity to become the juggernaut of 2011, kicking every other game in the balls and effortlessly claiming top prize. Sadly, due to some big misstep in the gameplay department, this wasn't meant to be. I'll just start by listing what the game *obviously* got right:

  • The atmosphere - incredible.
  • The artstyIe - incredible.
  • The environments - incredible.
  • The story - the story isn't anything incredible, but the way it's told certainly is.
  • The controls/gameplay - very responsive and fluid

As you can see there's a lot to love about this game, and truth be told I did enjoy it and found it to be very good overall, but the platforming... mother of god. Now what you will notice in Alice as you reach maybe the 2nd or 3rd world, is that some of the platforming sections start to seem eerily familiar. No that's not your imagination. The developer took the first few platforming sections introduced in the first ****ing worlds and ****ing copy/pasted them throughout the whole god damn game. You're literally going through the EXACT same level throughout the entire game, only each one has a nice new shiny coat of paint. ****ing stupid!

Now take that and combine it with some of the most god awful mini-games ever to be sharted out of satan's anus and you have a game that begins to wear thin on you after a while. These are some pretty big flaws and their negative effect on the game is very apparent. Now me personally, there was enough things about the game I loved that helped me persevere through the mind****ing repetition of the platforming sections. Alice has wonderful artistic value and more than a few brilliant moments.

Infact one of my favorite gaming moments of 2011 happend in this game - in the very first level as you strut through a very beautiful and friendly-looking Wonderland (like the one in the Disney film) things take a turn for the worse and the environment slowly begins to distort and deform into a dark and evil place - twas EPIC. 7.5 for this very good game.

InFamous 2

This is another one I was hyping to the heavens and ended up being somewhat dissapointed by. The first InFamous caught me entirely off guard and became my second favorite game of 2009 behind Demon's Souls. The game was just fun as f*** to play and along with it came an AWESOME story that, surprisingly for a open world game, was well paced. InFamous 2 certainly lived up to the original in terms of gameplay, even surpassing it by a pretty substantial margin. It offers tons on top of tons of new powers and they're all very fun to test out and use. There's also a lot more side stuff to do in I2 compared to the original, but none of it is all that compelling and it breaks up the pacing of the game.

Story and pacing is where this game falters. I just wasn't as invested in the story this time around. It starts off impressively enough with The Beast's arrival, but the story quickly devolves into this tiresome chase where you're trying to stop some lame redneck who does nothing but spout boring propaganda (a far cry from the original's fantastic and mysterious villain, who is one of my favorites from this gen). The repetitive side missions and endless mini-bosses don't do the stories' pacing any favors. In the stories' defence though, it does pick up in the later half and ends with a bang, but it's just a shame it took so long to get there. Overall it's still a great game that's fun to play and it has some very memorable moments. It's just a step down from the original. 8.5

**** this is taking too long. I'm gonna start shortening some of these up (like you didn't see that coming)...

Dead Space 2

Loved this one. Visceral Games managed to dramatically crank up the pacing and action while also keeping the oh so glorious atmosphere and creepy ambience of the original. Isaac became a much more compelling character this time around. The story is more interesting. The sound is still god-tier. The weapons are still epic. Simply put, Dead Space 2 matches the quality of the original and even surpasses it in some respects. It's the ideal sequel. 9.0

Dark Souls

Not much needs to be said about this one. Game is a ****ing masterpiece and lives up to it's spiritual prequel's godly reputation. It's also the best game of 2011.9.5

Dead Island

Surprisingly fun zombie romp with badass first person combat. Somewhat clunky as well, but badass none the less. The story is awful, like, not even bad in a good way awful. Just... awful. The same can be said for the characters. Still, the cool setting, unbelievable amount of loot, varied weapon customization, and fun gameplay make it a great game. 8.0

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

It's ****ing Call of Duty. 7.0

Resistance 3

The campaign is just outstanding. It's dark and atmospheric, incredibly well paced, packed with memorable moments, and it features one of the best weapon loadouts in videogame history. It's one of my favorite FPS campaigns of all time. The multiplayer unfortunately didn't fare as well. Insomniac felt the need to gut 50% of the features introduced in R2's superb multiplayer and added a bunch of CoD-centric crap like killstreaks and perks (yuck). 9.5 for the campaign and 6.5 for the multiplayer.

Battlefield 3

It really says something when I'm still playing this game extensively to this very day, even more so than newer games I've purchased in 2012. The multiplayer in this game is just ****ing FABULOUS (and I'm saying that in the least flamboyant way possible). Big maps, beautiful graphics, the best sound that money can buy, gunplay that feels astoundingly satisfying, and best of all, it actually CHALLENGES you to play strategically and intelligently.

This game is the anti-CoD. No killstreaks or perks or quickscoping or ANY of that noob-friendly bull****. Just teamwork and skill. Now the campaign on the other hand sucks ass. One of the more generic and boring ones in recent memory. But as many a Battlefield fan says, who plays it for the singleplayer? 9.5 for the multiplayer and 5.0 for the campaign.

Skyrim

Skyrim contains one of the most immersive and beautiful game worlds I've ever had the pleasure of exploring. My first time venturing out into this massive place, I couldn't help but stare in awe at the distant forests and mountains. So much to see, so little time to spend away from life. Unfortunately the game ran like **** on PS3 and only got worse as the hours piled on top of one another. Fortunately it's been patched and the game runs fine now. I give the now fixed Skyrim a 9.0

Here is a list of the games I purchased back in 2011 that I have yet to spend a lot of time with...

Crysis 1

Fallout 3

Assassin's Creed 2

Trine 2

That's all for now you crazy bastards. Let me know what you're thinking in the comments and keep fighting the good fight!

Sat, 26 Nov 2011 18:23:09 -0800 System Wars is ****ed in the head http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25962190 So I'm posting in this topic about what genre Dark Souls fits into, and some asshat troll comes in and says "Dark Souls is terrible." That's it. Dark Souls is terrible. Nothing of substance or reasoning in his post, no legit criticisms. His post didn't even have anything to do with the topic. So naturally I call him out on it in an attempt to, at the very least, get him to elaborate on his unfounded comment.

Lo and behold everybody starts attacking me and accusing me of numerous things like trolling, trying to turn the thread into a vs topic, and even going as far as insinuating that I can't accept other people's opinions or some such garbage. Meanwhile, no body even thinks of questioning the troll (who is a NEW user by the way).

How ****ed up is it that a longtime regular like myself gets attacked for calling out a new user who is clearly trolling? And the most messed up thing in all of this is that one of the people who took the side of the troll just so happens to also be a longtime regular and somebody that I once respected. This crap just seems to happen way too often now a days. SW has gone down hill man, way down hill.

It just vanished into thin air *POOF*. I'm a bit of a moron when it comes to making gifs manually without the help of some website. I attempted it once via some "easy-to-follow" steps I found online and failed miserably. I just want my Sarah Carter sig back

*EDIT*

Wait! I think I just found it. I searched "Master_ShakeXXX" at Google images and a bunch of s*** about Vanquish, Crysis 2, and NIER came up ( ) along with my sig. I'm gonna see if I can copy/paste it into my profile.

Mon, 08 Aug 2011 20:20:06 -0700 I give up... http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25944307 I'm really at a loss here. I love System Wars, but I simply can't stand visiting it anymore. A certain user (please, for my sake, don't even mention it's screen name) has been following me and starting arguments with me for over a year and a half (yes, you heard that right, over a year and a half), arguments of which I don't even want to be involved in. Now I know what you're saying - "big deal, just ignore him". I have tried that, oh lord have I tried, but this dude is simply relentless. It's almost as if his whole life revolves around annoying me.

Examples: if I ignore him, he still doesn't stop, ever.

If I take the bait, reply back to his taunt, and start arguing with him, he doesn't give up. No matter how much I prove his illogical rantings wrong, he doesn't stop arguing with me, ever.

Since he never gives up, this of course always leads to two conclusions; either I simply have to give up even though I'm in the right, or I get extremely pissed and start saying "offensive" things that are in violation of the TOU, which then leads to ME getting moderated. And what happens to him after all of this? Nothing. Gets away. Scott free. Seldom even a warning.

I go to the moderators and admins to ask them for help. I explain my situation thoroughly, provide links, etc etc, and what do they do for me? Nothing. Just what in the f*** am I supposed to do in this situation? No matter what I lose!

1. I can't avoid him, because he always views my posting history and replies to my posts in an aggresive fashion.

2. I can't have a reasonable and calm discussion with him. Only a never-ending fight that I have to put an end to.

3. More often than not, I'm the one who gets moderated for the stupid argument that I didn't even start or WANT to happen.

4. I can't make peace with him as I have already tried. He wouldn't have any of it.

5. I can't get any help from the moderators or admins.

It appears that my only option is to simply roll over, take his crap, and ignore him. That's all I can really do. It's either that or I stop posting in SW, which is something I don't want to do. But like I stated earlier, simply ignoring him doesn't stop him. Just bugs the f*** out of me that he is allowed to get away with crap like this, while I have to put up with it or suffer the consequenses. No body ever said the world is fair but this s*** is just straight up wrong.

Sat, 14 May 2011 17:22:43 -0700 My favorite moment of Crysis 2's campaign... http://www.gamespot.com/users/Master_ShakeXXX/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25927146 Silently I stalk in the night, pouncing from tree to tree, building to building. 'Tis my playground of death. My visor spots a fresh piece of CELL meat walking about, sopping up the midnight air. I silently move to and fro, not making a sound. This is my playground. I've been the perfect weapon for as long as I can remember. No warm fuzzy memories - just cold pricklies and the smell of death, and the sight of a thousand bodies lieing before me, all meeting their end by my blade. Not even one of them knew I was in the same room...

With me I carry my ever so trusty knife, and a silenced pistol- I'm not sure what it's called... I only know the sound it makes when it takes a man's life. I begin my slow paced pursuit, letting the prey sense my presence, making him nervous, anxious, giddy. I'm like a lion cub toying with a helpless captured baby seal. My target begins walking ever so quicker - he senses something wrong, the feeling that death it's self is going in for the chokehold. He begins running, utterly unsure of why he's doing so, but he just knows something is wrong.

He falls... As he recollects himself, the prey comes to the horrific realization that he had tripped over an elaborate barricade crafted out of bone and meat, all from his fallen comrades (heh, that would be my work). He screams, and takes off sprinting. YES YES! This is what I wanted, the thrill of the hunt. That ever so precious and beautiful dance that could only be performed by predator and prey. I begin gliding through the trees and the night as gracefully as the breeze... I leap... I cloak... I strike!

As I stand before my kill, I can't help but feel empty. Not because of what I did but of what I have become. I look off to the horizon and remember my past... war. Charging through the jungles of Vietnam, dragging my legless armless comrade through the muck and the insects while at the same time fending off an entire 50 man squad of VC was just... it just had a PURPOSE. It all made sense. Now what am I? Just an old merc, doing a little wet work, only I'm donning a nanosuit, doing the only thing I've ever known to get by; killin. When war is in your blood... killins as easy as breathin.

That Crysis 2 is a pretty immersive game!
