Thu, 04 Jun 2009 17:49:32 -0700 Home! http://www.gamespot.com/users/Lovely_beauty/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25679876 Good morning my friends. I returned to my apartment last night and have just read your comments on the previous post and I want to say thank to all of you who spent time encouraging me through this hard time. I do wish I had something better to say, but truly thank you for making this small page a confidential place where I could write down things I couldn't elsewhere.

Also my apology for being vague in the last post, it was a fibroma in a little bit nasty position but the medical tests have confirmed that it was not malignant. To be honest, I feel so ashamed when rereading my previous post. I shouldn't have been so, well, pathetic, should I? But you see, in my memory some relations on my father's side died of cancerous tumors and I really do not have much knowledge on this topic. So I can only say to myself that's what happens when one is both ignorant and alone.

On my sick bed

Although the incision is healing well, I still feel a bit too cranky for gaming right now. Instead, I have been listening to music a lot and reading my favorite book, a biography of Frederic Chopin. The old book was given to me by my aunt very long ago, and despite having gone through it more than ten times, I always find something new and amazing whenever opening it. This time, the above quotation, an attitude quite different from mine, isn't it?

My friend took a few photos for me in the hospital with her cell-phone. Do you think shameful and miserable experiences are as worth remembering as happy moments in our life?

Thu, 28 May 2009 04:33:32 -0700 Under the Knife http://www.gamespot.com/users/Lovely_beauty/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25675091 Tomorrow on the operating table will not be any game, but I. Different, isn't it? Between finding a catchy title, sliding the rating bar: 8.0, 8.5... and receiving the result of your medical tests and an advice "You SHOULD take an operation ASAP"? I remember in all those teen-killer movies, the damsels always have some maudlin guys who wait anxiously outside the operating room and keep babbling "How... how is she?" whenever someone gets out. I do not. Just a few days ago I hesitantly asked one of my colleagues and probably my only friend here to drop into the hospital if she had time and the lady kindly promised to stay with me during and after the surgery. It reminds me that lately, ever since I moved to this city some half a year ago, I have become terrible at making friends, meaning people you feel comfortable to ask for favors in situations like this. And it's even worse to ponder over the Emergency Contact field on the form. Who could possibly? Not my parents, for they are far away and time has worn out their nerves, making them so easy to get panicked. I don't even risk posting this on my main blog because they may happen to read it sometimes. So these few lines are about everything on these miserable moments.

I have been thinking that our time is similar to a seamless flow and rarely do we realize that it's getting away every moment. But some events on that do face us against our current position and how far we have strayed from another point in the past. Anyhow, that's enough rambling. Please pray for me or write a few nice words down here to let me know someone in the world still cares for me. I'm logging out, since it's better to have an early night.

Fri, 15 May 2009 06:39:18 -0700 Return to The Frozen Throne http://www.gamespot.com/users/Lovely_beauty/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25669047 The Frozen Throne (TFT) used to cost me an arm and a leg, I mean if time is money. This is probably the only game I have spent so much time on to develop my skill. Although it's a true milestone in the evolution of the Real time strategy genre, in my own experience, it was even more special. Firstly, it was published at a time when the Net in my country became good enough for me to play on European an US servers. Imagine, before that I had been playing Broodwar solely on LAN with local players, this new experience was quite overwhelming. And secondly, everybody was so damn crazy when it came out, and so was I. I still remember how my ex bringing the TFT cd and we installed it together. Though our first 2 vs 2 on Battle net was a loss, we soon developed an imbalanced Night Elf and Undead combo (hunt, fiend rushing ) which allowed us to have statistics like 30-6. I still keep some of our replays though it hurts too much to upload here .

My TFT Profile

Nevertheless, enough about the past. Back to now, I have spent the last few days playing on Garena and practising to play on Battle net again. It's great to play solo games though I'm also looking for some good undead player to fill in the blank of my life. My account on both Blizzard Battle Net (Kalimdor and Azeroth) and Garena is Lovely_beauty, of course. Please add me to your friend list if you happen to be playing this game right now, and post your account name here so that I can add you too. Anyone want to solo vs me, you have a duel. Just don't suck like this guy please!

I have one which I have kept at the bottom of my treasure chest for a long time and which I feel ashamed to open. How could it be? How could so many meaningful moments, the happiest years of our lives dwindle in to these soulless lines, though meticulous but powerless to retain what we have gone through? At times, such as tonight while I was sitting alone with my in front of the keyboard, the thought that I have no control over my language, or the language itself has no hold of my ideas, keeps pressing upon my mind.

The Longest Journey

Yet, there is another thing I keep in that treasure box: "The Longest Journey" CD set. It's nearly ten years you know. Ten years since the first time that little duckling dragged the mouse inside her awkward fingers and clicked on that line: "Start the Journey" to open up a world of wonder. Ten years since the time she spent endless hours dipping her stunned mind into this old cumbersome screen. Ten years since the small rat sneaked out of her bed every night to turn on her noisy computer, despite the risk of being caught by her angry mother.

Yet ten years later, she is setting up the old game on another computer, half an hour of flutter only to have some ridiculous warning about compatibility? Halt! A marvel! It opens again, before her astonished eyes. You know, the old days are somewhere, but always with us if want them back.

Sat, 02 May 2009 06:01:52 -0700 Anyone could help me with Gamespot HTML editor please? http://www.gamespot.com/users/Lovely_beauty/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25662993 Hi there, I am trying to manipulate HTML source code of my post with div and table tags to control my layout. However, after I click Preview or Summit buttons, these tags just disappear totally from my post and of course my layout is ruined. I get so frustrated! Could anyone help me please?

Ps: Please tell me if you need screen shots but I think the description above is clear enough. By the way, I was trying to create a layout similar to this blog post.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update: I have just received a message from an admin of our site in which he clarifies: "HTML and any fancy CSS is automatically stripped out of blog and forum posts not done by anyone with an Admin status, unfortunately". However, why does the editor have function like accessing HTML source and inserting table if we are not allowed to use these HTML elements freely?!!!Anyway, my thanks to anyone reading this post and trying to help me.

Update #2:

Who is this?

Mon, 09 Mar 2009 05:53:30 -0700 Hi, I'm finally back! http://www.gamespot.com/users/Lovely_beauty/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25637409 I have been away from gaming and Gamespot for the past few months, which were really a hard period in my life.I'm not going into details of what happened to me and how I could manage through these months (for it sounds a bit like an old, bitter spinster to me ). However, there were times when I thought that I could never return to video games any more, not because of my schedule or something, but of the constant feeling that it seemed to be a waste of time compared to other ... more important matters in life. Unfortunately, "Old habits die hard", especially once things have returned to normal. So I'm here.

Actually I have been back to gaming for few weeks, but it was 2 days ago I started to write review again. What inspired me to do so was my meeting with a very interesting guy from a gaming magazine in my country. Two game addictors reached each other's thoughts quite easily for the first date and he sent my this very useful document to improve my writing. I haven't finished reading it but there seems to be a big amount of information on video game genres, which is essential when we try to evaluate a game. You know, with such knowledge we will hardly praise a game unduly merely because it re-execute some common features of its type. On the other hand, we can avoid overlooking precious innovations of the genre.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Besides, I really appreciate the fact that after few months of inactivity, I still have so many friends on my list. It's really nice to see you all again

It has always been a pleasure to watch a star rising, but it is an outburst of happiness and veneration to see one revive at the moment everybody thinks he will be plunged into darkness. This was my feeling after watching Federer outmatched Murray on Arthur Ashe Stadium last night. However, despite my joy and satisfaction, I still can't help but wonder whether what happened justifies the statement that a man can achieve everything with his constant determination and tireless effort. The first reason for this doubtful attitude is because Fed did not played versus Nadal, the one I hope he finds the way to control. The second is the controversial point on the fifth game of second set when Murray had the most obvious chance in the whole match to turn the tide. The TV replay actually showed that Federer's shot was long but the lineman called it in. Unfortunately, inexperienced Murray did not challenge such a critical point, and therefore missed the opportunity. It's not that I don't want to see the King return but I want to see how far Fed can get with his exertion. And in order to figure that out, let's wait for a bigger challenge to encounter him, something like Roland Garros next year.

Fri, 15 Aug 2008 20:26:42 -0700 Shigeru Miyamoto and the milestones (Part I) http://www.gamespot.com/users/Lovely_beauty/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25506593 On the occasion of the premiere of superordinary WiiFit, a product containing many break-through idea by Shigeru Miyamoto, let's look back to his leading masterpieces in the past.

It's hard to imagine the face of modern gaming industry without Shigeru Miyamoto's constant contributions in the last few decades. Would it still be possible for graphically imposing games such as Crysis, Unreal Tournament to come into sight if the pioneer in 3D graphics - Super Mario 64 (1996)- did not exist? How would 3D game become without Miyamoto's revolution in this field? And not to mention features of RPG-adventure like unlocking secret areas or upgrading items as we have seen in Zelda since 1987, there are still many things we can count as his dedication. Maybe many young gamers nowadays feel suspicious about such hearty compliments, or even wonder who this "Miyamoto" is! However, revising the whole history of this modern industry, we can confidently acclaim him as one of, if not the most prominent game designers. Following are the milestone in his illustrious career.

1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES, 1990)

Super Mario Bros 3 Screen

Unlike Zelda series, the first version of Super Mario Bros was thrown into shadow by its own successor. If you ever play any of 2D Mario games before, it is not hard to figure out why Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of the best-selling products of all time. The diversity in game play in each scene, convenient control system and many surprises along the way, this releash has been enthralling many generations of gamers.

2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES, 1992)

A Link to the Past

Lengend of Zelda, reputed for its thrilling adventurous game play, has been on of the career-defining works by master Miyamoto. Though designed in 2D environment, A Link to the Past was truly mind-blowing with its immense maps and compelling screenplay. It forever holds the rightful position in the highest rank of video games.

3. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64, 1996)

Super Maro 64

Is there anything else one can say about this game? As already known, at its time, the game was leading a new free ****in graphics and game play. No longer were gamers confined in a stuffy 2D world, on the other hand, they could travel airily with the plumber in an enormous 3D environment. Surprisingly, it is still among the best in the aspect of camera angle and speed control till now, despite his decade old age.

4. Wii Sports (Wii, 2006)

Wii Sports

Introduced on Nintedo's new console at that time, Wii, this sport game was a striking phenomenon to the general public. Its new control set with sensor Remote was absolutely unprecedented and original. Soon it was played and loved everywhere. That first impression is so strong that it would be an nearly impossible for any developer with enough ambition to produce a more successful sequence.

5. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GameCube, 2003)

The Wind Waker

If possessing a HDTV, most gamers will favour Wind Walker on the high resolution screen over Oscarina of Time. Despite the creative game play of its predecessor, wind Walker managed to cause quite a stir with its unbelievable cel-shading art. Its character models are the emphasis in the dreaming world Miyamoto dedicated to his fans

Sat, 12 Jul 2008 04:04:55 -0700 Deja vu http://www.gamespot.com/users/Lovely_beauty/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25469753 If you ever come across your old photo and suddenly realize how much you have changed, you may have the same feeling as I'm having these day. But the picture is only image of our body. There are other images that whimsically resemble our old personality - the junior we meet in our life.

They are everywhere now. Last week, I happened to tune to a gaming channel that was broadcasting WCG qualification in my country. Few years ago, I could have been on such a show, since I used to be so good at Warcraft 3. But at that moment, when looking at these game maniacs and their enthusiasm, I suddenly feel so ... disgusted. And at weekend, one of my friends asked me to go shopping with her. She wanted a new "suggestive" dress for the first date with an "angel". It was so clear that she needed a listener more than a fashion connoisseur. Then I listened to her all the way, trying to add few remark at times, just to conceal my feeling of deja vu. To be frank, for a while, I have gotten so used to the role of audience when all my gals come to me boasting about their newest victims. Now it becomes something distasteful. If only I could overload myself with work to escape this thought. However, I feel that even at works. Recently I'm assigned to instruct a group of trainee programmers at my company. If they were rude or pompous to me, I would feel better. But no, they are so respectful, timid and keep calling me "ma'am". WoW! And you know what, I responded to their thanks with a strained, cold smile. It was exactly at that moment that I realized I had become someone I used to fear. Such a smile was on the interviewer's face when I first applied to work.

They are old images of mine, the self that I have outgrown, the milestone I left behind in my long journey. Calling them an obsession is exaggerating, but they force me to think: Why am I so harsh to these junior, since I'm not always like that? It's just me or it happens to everyone else, at a certain age when we already have much experience in our life? Or have I become a prissy spinster? One way or another, this feeling doesn't stop at that. Since I have hatred for those fledgelings' enthusiasm, passion, excitement, anxiety ect..., I myself really try to avoid these state of mind. To be precise, the less emotion shown up, the better! It is a paradox that I have much more social relationship now, but few could really touch me. They all become routine, just like when you practise a piece day after day, with the notion of virtuosity in your mind, it turns out to be nothing more than a combined pattern of key touch.

When we are small, our parents keep teaching us what marvellous things we can achieve with our effort. But at a certain age, we will inevitably learn the reverse, that is, there are many things in life we simply have to stand without groaning. Roger used to show me the struggle towards the pinnacle and now how to think and behave when the sunset comes. While many others can't learn the simple way things have to be, I know he never keeps a grudge against the younger. Love you, Fed, even when you are no longer the winner.

Wed, 14 May 2008 19:28:13 -0700 Games for female - who is the key figure? http://www.gamespot.com/users/Lovely_beauty/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25412454 I remember reading somewhere that Titanic surpassed Star Wars to be the best movie of all time because it managed to attract audience of both sexes. In gaming industry, The Sims label can be an equivalent. According to EA, this series celebrated 100 million units sold in April 16, 2008, making it the best-selling in all video game's history. I'm not sure if it's really better than Need for Speed or FiFa series. Or is it because the game is laptop-friendly? But perhaps the main reason is that women like it.

While many games nowadays succeed in creating attractive female characters to catch the attention of male gamers, the question is how to apply the same strategy with female players. It is hard for me to extract a model but personally I look more at the personality of the character than his appearance. Following are top male characters I really like in games:

1.Frédéric Chopin (Eternal Sonata): Chopin used to be all my life, and now, he comes here to continue torturing me.

2. Samanosuke Akechi (Onimusha 1,2,3): Well, it's not necessary that whenever you rescue a princess, she will become your possession. If you ever play Onimusha Warlord, you will find the motivation sometimes is mere friendship!

3. Jacques Blanc (Onimusha 3: Demon Siege): I myself want to find a man who can sacrifice his own love for the sake of his son.

4. Illidan Stormrage (Warcraft 3): I must admit that I always summon this guy as my first, if not only, hero since I have always been Night Elf. In Warcraft scenario, he's the man who loves desperately a priestess while at the same time knows that this love is nothing compared to his lust for magic! Well, finally he still can risk his life for her.

5. Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher): Sometimes I feel like blaming him for being unfaithful. But after all, there has not been any marriage yet, and he has his way of romance. I like a detail at beginning of the game: although Geralt lost all his memory but he still feels something "hard to say" when seeing Triss recover.

6. Leon S. Kennedy (Resident Evil 4): It's the circumstance you have to rescue a "princess" simply because you are told to.

7. Vince (The Sims Life Story) : A man can be talented and succeeds in career but still very unlucky in romance. I guess it's better than the reverse.

8. Serious Sam (Serious Sam: First and Second Encounter): Funny comic hero type, somehow reminds me of Mr.Incredible.
