Of course we are obliged to buy this one, its part of owning a machine that plays games, you have to buy this. The increasing fact is that you dont have to like it.

The characters are familiar, Captain Price is as rugged and direct as ever and Yuri seems to be clinging on for dear life at every turn. The enemy do what they do as do the weapons. It looks fantastic and sounds better, the pace is bang on and the reward mechanism built in for collecting intel and completing on veteran is satisfying.

Thing is though im underwhelmed by this. There will be detractors who simply like to eh, detract just for the sake of it but there is a bigger point here i feel. With the success of this title and the continued appetite for this type/style of game comes a price, more of the same. Take for example the overhaul of the most recent Ace Combat title, they have looked at the $$$$$$ from COD and tried to replicate that, it failed in my opinion for a number of reasons that i will go over in my review of it to come.

Dont get me wrong the online aspect of this will take up some of my time, i will enjoy it and get a feeling of achievement from it but the flatness remains. From now on i will set my expectation bar low for these games and therefore avoid disappointment but i will buy the next one, and the even bigger next one...its kind of just what we do isnt it?

Serious excitement mounted for this title, rightly so after the resounding success of Arkham Asylum two years ago. Im a serious nerd when it comes to getting things like this right, adhering to the feel, flow and rhythm of the previous title would be key, also adding and building on the best bits just as important.

This time around the space in which you go up against Gotham's worst is larger, more complex and beautifully decayed. The detail in the gothic buildings, collapsed streets and murky sewers is some of the best ive seen. You will go about this area with a sense that there is something pertinent lurking around each corner, and there usually is.

This time around the elaborate combat system has been beefed up a little, its tougher to get the perfect combo routines going but this only makes it all the more satisfying when you do string an epic together (played this on hard by the way). The movement throughout the City gliding on the cape, diving when needed and grasping with the grappel is so intuative and easy to pick up and i have to say sitting atop a gargoyle 40ft up waiting on a Joker faced con to turn his back has never been so good!

Being a fan of this genre of game i always look forward the mix of bad guys and opponents. They are all here, you name him/her they're here. The AI of these criminals dotted about the expanse jail is well balanced, sometimes they are super tough requiring patience big style...others are just dumb. There are many ways to skin a cat, as we know, that too can extend to the various ways of taking these guys out. Rush in gung ho, settle back and bide your time, lay traps and pounce....these all add an extra dimension. These dust ups do throw up a bug bear for me. There are bundles of rewards and achievement attached to this title. I love that, makes the whole experience richer and adds value...these notifications however appear in the middle of the screen. These practically cover the screen and can lead to some pretty frustrating deaths during mass brawls. A simple gold bat-symbol in the top left would do next time fellas.

Complete the lengthy and rich story mode and you are rewarded with many things, i usually leave a game after ive completed the story...this time around however the experience and mood of this will keep me going back for extras and extras and extras. At a time when there a so many other top games competing for my coin, for me to want to play this over and keep exploring is a huge indication of the quality of Batman: Arkham city.

Team Fortress 2 is just fun. The controls are easy to pick up and getting into a match is quick. Having random loot drop during the course of gameplay also entices one to play longer than expected in one sitting.

There are nine classes to choose from, each stylized to fit a player's preference. The classes are unique from one another and yet the gameplay mechanics are balanced. Each class has a counter-class.

The spy can cloak and hide as the other team before backstabbing an unsuspecting foe. The pyro was never taught to respect fire and uses its judiciously. The sniper can sit practically across the map and pick off players from a distance. The heavy packs a whallop with his barrel gun and is a killing machine when paired with the medic. The scout easily beats every other class in a foot race and can change direction in mid-air. The soldier is an all-around offensive class armed with a rocket launcher. A good engineer is the facet for a good push while a bad engineer could conceivably cost the team the game. The most difficult class to play in my opinion is the demoman. With sticky dynomite and a grenade launcher, the demoman requires a bit of foresight to play effectively.

There are dozens of maps to choose from, each with their own objectives. The game is free to play and Valve continues to update the game with new gear and special events. There is also a section for players to craft their own gear and submit their designs for new weapons and maps.

Communities make a game and Team Fortress 2 has one of the best communities around.

Review from a frustrated gentleman.

This title intrigued me from the day i saw the early previews, liked the mood of the thing and the premise. A first person RPG of sorts with stealth elements that switch to 3rd person. A range of weapons and enemys that progress in difficulty.

So basically you are a security guard who has been enhanced by cyborg attachments and upgrades. You live in a future world that has a cynical, sepia look not to disimilar to Corruscant (the grimy centre of the Star Wars Universe).

Work your way through the areas by speaking to the dodgy inhabitants of the citys' underbelly. These folks will either point you in the right direction, give you backchat or simply rock back and forth in a stupor. There are items scattered all around, the usual story being some are useful and some not so.

You have an inventory the size of which can be upgraded too. Upgrades work around Praxis points, picking up one of these allows an upgrade on your cyborg/augmentations. A huge array of potential upgrades await from increased stealth, longer invisibilty, steady aim, longer sprint, etc etc and more stength to move vending machines(surely a must for MW3).

Each item you pick up takes up some of the space in this inventory, this is where juggling your objectives for the game and deciding what way you want to progress is important.

My thought is you could progress through this game, quite conceivably by not firing a single bullet. The stealth element being excellent. Taking concepts from Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell and building on them, its perfect. Enemys can be taken out with stun darts, gas cannisters, sneak takedowns, temporary invisibility, when you have used all the above. So, i decided id do this without firing a single bullet. Thats what id do.

All good then, good until that is you get to the tough guy at the end of some of the levels. M. Bison, Bowser, Trevelyan and Darth Malek these guys were tough but generally if you got to them you were sufficiently equipped to deal. My bug with Deus Ex, and truth be told its the only bug as overall its fantastic, but these boss fights seemed tagged on. With me progressing through the game with stealth in mind, why would i consider picking up a heavy machine gun or a frag granade?? These that would be so important against these bosses. I came up against bosses without the correct weapons, no upgrades available and a world of frustration ensued. Also the boss levels seemed poorly designed, i dont think a selection wheel for weapons with such a slow reload time is the way to go!!!

The game is worth it for the stealth, story and the range and variety of upgrades, my advice, large inventory upgrade and have a selection of high damage weapons for those bosses.

Nice.

Something caught my imagination back in the day with this one it sort of came out of nowhere for me. Having been interested in racing games and a solid stint on Wipeout i thought id give this one a go.

Visuals were stunning, for the time, and the learning curve wasnt too steep, its was a ball from start to finish. Great mix of characters to choose also, from dredd-locked cool boys to sassy ladys theres something for all. What caught me was the atmosphere of the experience. The music is bang on for this genre and they have nailed the upgrade options. This title deserves a new lease of life with an online community and maybe guns (joke).

Controls were easy to get a hold of and ramping up on levels is pretty good, if my memory serves me right.

All in all very good, and in many ways what arcade simulation is all about.

I knew it, I didn't read a review or look at screenshots or listen to my mate, but I knew it. This would be a shocker.

This tie in nonsense that comes with every summer block buster never excites and stinks of corporations ringing their hands more than any other time. I know there are lucrative franchises that wipe our eyes every couple of months for a some new maps and that but we sort of live with that, how do we still live with such amateur drivel such as Thor.

My 9 year old daughter could presumably develop a smoother gaming engine on her Etch a Sketch, the satisfaction of not hitting targets, consitently, is immense. You wonder about the meeting at the end of game development? Backslapping, "yeah you were great, how did I do?", talk of awards, returning for sequels.....I'm certain the reality was more like slipping out the back door and turning you phone off.

If this dross continues to sell then we will be subjected to more, everyone please take heed. Let's get together and stop this laughable piss take.

PS. I hired this 'game' for only 2 pounds, and returned it early.

Triumph/Tribulation – Singularity Review

This review will likely contain large amounts of spoilers, annoyances, rants, and possibly some form of humor as I decide if a game is worthy of the triumph/tribulation title–. Or–. "Triumbulation" which would be somewhere in-between the two.

Singularity begins with you flying towards your objective in a helicopter, and of course if you play many FPS games you know where this is heading. A wave of energy hit the helo causing it to crash.. just once I would like to have something pleasant happen to me while flying in a helicopter.

The first hour in Singularity is greatly different than what follows, almost reminiscent of the experience you receive in dead space. Evil humanoid creatures jumping out of spooky environments with you wielding only a pistol with limited bits of ammo. Though once you find your first assault rifle the game changes, now you blast away without a fear of running out on ammo which seems to take that creepy sensation right out of the game.

After Renko (your character) mistakenly messes with the "temporal prime directive" you must find a way to stop the giant singularity of doom. This is done with the help of supporting characters, and a device you gain access to called the TMD (Time Manipulation Device). This device add a good deal of fun to the game allowing you to hurl objects, age people to dust, and even turn enemies into the evil mutated creatures that wreak havoc on your attackers.

The TMD also allows you to repair or destroy certain items which can be used to help solve some of the rather noobish puzzles. Fix another crate– use crate to jump up to higher area, now I feel smart– smash crate, place under door, repair crate to lift door– Rinse– repeat–

Now most games you play tend to scale up the difficultly towards the end of the game. Singularity does the absolute opposite to an extreme level, making the last 45 minutes of game play extremely easy as you run about with unlimited power for your TMD.

The finale to the game adds in the only element of choice Singularity presents you with. Allowing you to make a good, evil, or I'm Darth Vader screw the world and all its fluffy creatures' selection.

Throughout Singularity Film and audio logs you discovery add interesting bits of history to what happened in the past to cause these issues. They also sometimes add a level of nervousness to what is going to be around the next corner.

Sadly I haven't been able to experience any of the multi-player game play due to the lack of enough players to even allow a match to begin. So if you're looking at this game you likely have to write this off as something you won't be able to experience much of.

Now even though I beat on this game a bit I un-expectantly gave this title a Triumph score of 8.0. Well worth the time if you are looking for a new shooter while waiting for the next Bioshock game.

Intrigued by the options provided by the nano suit i went into this title not really knowing what to expect, i was pleasantly surprised as will you be...i think.

The piece is set in New York City (those urban exploration devotees out there will love the setting). A city thats been ravaged by both man and a slippery bunch of invaders.

You take on the suit with its various attributes like damage resistance and the brilliant invisibility, guided by some science whizzes and marine fellas in your ear from time to time there is a feel of Metal Gear Solid and about this, more so when you enchance the suit as you progress.

Thinking that simply running through the levels being invisible is the way to go then think again. Stealth kills, secret packages and collecting slippery visitors ether gives you a need to gather and collect as you progress, great for the 100 percenters out there.

One drawback is maybe the limited range of weapons, would it have been too difficult to let some of the slippery visitors weapons be playable?

Well concieved sequel.

A huge move forward his game, advanced, technical and ambitious.

Embracing a massive galaxy and interesting storyline with exceptionally believable characters and mood. This game delivered on every level, taking the fantasy adventure books from when i was a kid to a whole new level. Turn to page 62 if you wish to fight the Krakon, Turn to page 142 if you wish to use magic...etc.

So not only do you have an immersive world but also a very clever option wheel for weapons and team commands, each member of your individually selected team brings different abilities, from telekinesis to brutal force. These are intuatively controlled by the aforementioned option wheel. Very satisfying.

The richness of the environments keeps you interested throughout and the mining of outlaying planets is something you will find neccessarily addictive.

This one will run and run.

Outstanding. The focus at the beginning here and throughout is street cleaning prowess and business accumen.

Take a lowly firm into the premier league of street sweepers by high quality street sweeping, and cleaning. Upgrade your equipment as you progress, aiming for the holy grail of Johnston VT800 with optional dust suppression system.

After 4 hours of driving around, leaving gleaming streets behind you, you will realise what all the fuss is about. Im already looking forward to the expansion pack, which is rumoured to contain optional high pressure water systems attachments, lofty ambitions i know.

Understand the narrative and take the business to the top, go back for more, alleyways are tough, make sure you select the correct width of vehicle or you'll experience problems, and this can lead to unharmonious relations with the council.

Good luck.

Maybe im being harsh saying linear, but its the letters rearranged from the title...couldnt resist, then on thinking compared to Red Dead Redemption and the GTA titles you could argue this is quite linear.

Goes without saying the game looks, feels, sounds, drive, runs, walks, shoots, hides and sneaks excellently. Its very very cool driving through the young LA as it sprouts up new areas and becomes bigger and badder. But, the feeling i got was this needed something extra, it got repetitive very quickly which i was surprised about.

The interrogation aspect was lovely at first but this grew frustrating, asking them question and not knowing how to proceed with the grilling was really annoying. Maybe this part was a bit ambitious by Rockstar, lying, as ill testify to, is a difficult thing to reproduce and read. They almost got it here but not just quite.

Keeping the classics alive man, this is excellent and will throw you right back to mid 80's Amstrad CPC 464 days, i played a similar title Slamander back on that platform but this is the daddy.

Squirming in and out of bouncing aliens and fleets of rippling craft gets tougher as the levels proceed, its hard to believe sometimes the little ship will fit through that gap...!

The rolling weapon upgrades make the experience very fulfilling and pretty tough, there is a cool toggle button that lets you change between shiny smooth today graphics and the blockier old school look, neat.

Two modes, one giving unlimited lives and the other true coin op style only has 3. Hardened arcade freaks only for the true coin op version id say. This is afforable classic gaming, nice to throw on for a relaxing half an hour.

First one came along and scared the bejesus right out of me. Eerie, freaky nonsense in a rattling echoey space ship, with flickering lights and messed up necromorphs that come at you bad. So, was it too much ask to deviate and bring something else to the table, i guess so. Gameplay is excellent, its lush looking and it is scary, properly, but really its the same thing as before.

Winning formulae usually resorts in the same thing again i guess, the thats the way of it. One thing on the weapons / tools, i thought there should have been something in there to encourage using all types. I kind of stuck to the wire cutter and the plasma, these seemed to handle all the freaks easy enough.

The online aspect was dissappointing, fiddly and had to wait quite a while for some others to decide to have a go.

Got the feel of the era's, equipment, people and ofcourse The Beatles to perfection. I never played a Rock Band or any other music game before so i had apprehension on this. Bearing in mind the depth and intracisies of The Beatles music, especially from '64 on, this whole project is a master stroke.

Everything is where it is meant to be and everything looks like how its meant to look, i suppose.

The story mode is recreated giving you the sense of the frenetic world they would have been thrust into, taking in some classic venues such as the low roofed Cavern Club on Matthew Street to The Budoken in Japans cool backdropped stage show.

You really dont need to love the band, infact a newcomer to the band can really enjoy this experience and learn a shed load about song construction and 3-4 part harmonies.

Yeah

Initially played the original 2d version on the pc, in work, on managers time. I remember the frustration with it but also the need to get through it.

When i saw it was coming around again i realised i needed to give it a proper go. Not disappointed and no manager coming in half way making me minimise the screen. The mood is great, the bending of the mind required just to understand what wall your gonna zoom through and why is staggering. Its a lovely experience from start to finish...and ofcourse a rare, actually funny game too.

The control aspect is cool and easy, sometimes a little odd that there arent more buttons but hey, maybe this minimal approach is the answer here.

Turn the lights off and get the turtle beaches on and get lost in this odd world, there is an end to it all bouncy and slippy.
