First of all, I must specify that this review is intended for the US/European version of the game. This might seem an unimportant note, but it's essential because the above-mentioned version had been dramatically enhanced and revised if compared with the Japanese version.I won't spend much time pointing out all the differences between the two, you'll find those information by viewing some FAQs regarding this game
in the Gamefaqs website and other sources.

I will also spend some more lines about the "original" game which gave birth to this sequel/spin-off, i.e. the world-wide famous Final Fantasy VII, released by Square Soft for PSX.FFVII it's quite possibly the most famous console RPG ever, telling the tale of a young man named Cloud and his companions facing a corrupted corporation called Shinra and the evil genetic experiment Sephiroth.FFVII featured a very unusual world, a strange but successful mix of fantasy and cyber-punk.In fact, FFVII world and plot share much more things with the Japanese anime Akira and Metal Gear Solid than your "average" Final Fantasy game.Needless to say DoC's main character Vincent Valentine was a member of the party back then-actually he was "consigned" to the role of "optional" character.

Taking place three years after the events of the original FFVII and one year after the CG animated movie Advent Children, DoC talks about the battle between the newly founded organization of volunteers called WTO and a mysterious group called Deepground Soldiers-with our dark and cool gunslinger Vincent Valentine obviously caught in the middle.Without spoiling anything to the reader, be aware that the story itself it's interesting enough to have you keep playing the game in order to know what happens next, but don't expect something never seen before.Besides some very nice twists, you'll find some flaws here and then, including some tendency of the villains to let them slip away the chance to "finish the job".

What really makes this game great-believe it or not-it's the gameplay. The greatest merit of this game playability can be summarized in one single word:customization. You can assign each and every button of your controller to any action. You can choose the difficulty level, and-most importantly-the aim type.By choosing the Normal difficulty and the Auto-aim you'll realize how the game works good. Those who have some experience with shooters will find it too easy for their taste, but those who don't eat Halo for breakfast and are searching for something entertaining and fun to play will certainly love this game.Because DoC has been released to be enjoyed and beaten without incredible efforts.Once the game it's completed, you have about 50 extra missions to face-and there's the real challenge.Of course, you can also choose the Extra Hard difficulty and start over again.
Concerning the development of the character, you'll find again the "classic" levels, but you'll have also to enhance your weapons with the money you earn after completing each mission.Thankfully, you'll earn money or experience (the choice, again, it's up to you) even when you die and start the level again. This way, you'll rest assured that you'll NEVER get stuck in a stage because you developed Vincent weapons' the wrong way.

Both graphics and music aren't exceptional, but they manage to do their work very well.Scenarios are well build in terms of creativity and design, and will make you pleased by the moment you'll stop counting the pixels on the screen and enjoy them as they are.The background music it's very good-not to mention the two final songs released by J-pop star Gackt.

In the end, Final Fantasy VII:Dirge of Cerberus it's a great game right because it doesn't pretend to rival Gears of War or Ghost Recon, but succeeds in providing a consistent amount of hours (provided that you'll complete the extra missions as well) of fun.
