Mon, 20 May 2013 16:55:52 -0700 The_Last_Ride reviewed Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for the Xbox 360... http://www.gamespot.com/battlefield-bad-company-2/user-reviews/811537/platform/xbox360/ ...and gave it a 8.5.

Bad Company starts takes place with a company that suddenly stumbles on something big on a military mission. With all the different personalities and actually a fun and good story spent on the singleplayer it makes for a great singleplayer story. The multiplayer doesn't lack anything either with a progression system and a lot of destructable enviroments that makes for dynamic gameplay.

The bad:
The graphic does take a hit in this game and does have framerate issues. If you don't care for the greatest graphics this won't be something to take notice of. But some may take notice.
Some of singleplayer events might be annoying with smaller glitches and sometimes quick time/live scenes events taking you out of the experience.
The multiplayer might feel a little familiar to most. The multiplayer does offer detructable enviroment, but doesn't really have anything new than any other shooter when it comes to multiplayer.

The Good:
The singleplayer really gives you a lot of options to approach the situation. Not forcing the player to choose just some random weapon the character is assigned. But actually choosing a weapons the level and what the player wants. The levels are linear, but don't feel linear as it actually might be.
The gameplay itself is really solid and does give the player enough to choose from in multiplayer and singleplayer.
The story is really solid in singleplayer and gives the player a story full of action story. With funny one liners and some great voice acting, it gives the story depth and purpose.
The level design is well done and never feels forced and gives the player enough variety to actually be a good change of pace instead of the constant gun shooting.

Overall:
It's a great shooter with really great singleplayer with humor and depth and a multiplayer that is solid but doesn't really add whole lot to formula, but is still fun to play. I would recomend this to anyone that is a fan of shooters to explore and some that haven't really tried the genre out yet.

Thu, 16 May 2013 17:24:48 -0700 The_Last_Ride reviewed Transformers: Fall of Cybertron for the Xbox 360... http://www.gamespot.com/transformers-fall-of-cybertron/user-reviews/811396/platform/xbox360/ ...and gave it a 8.5.

The game Fall of Cybertron takes place after the first game that tells the ending of the war between the Autobots and Decipticons. You take control of both sides and getting a deeper perspective from both sides.
There is a multiplayer in this game that has a progression system. There are also several classes to choose from enabling the player to explore more than one way to play.

The Bad:
There is a certain level that totally has a harder difficulty then the others. This is totally different then any of the other levels. The enemies are way harder, and more then the other levels. It also gives you little oppertunity to get more health and ammo. Making it hard even on normal and easy diffuculty. This is something the developer should have taken notice before launching it or fixing it after release.
The campaign is also a little on the short side. There is also little replaybility to the campaign other than trying to get achievments or trying to do it on harder difficulty. It is a shame it is so short, because the story is actually pretty good. Feeling they could have explored the game more with characters. The characters have little screen time other than the many known ones.

The Good:
Even though the story is short and not fully using the potential some of the stories could have had, it is by no chance bad. The story is really well paced and has enough actions and cutscenes to immerse the player in the experience.
The characters are colorful and well written. You never feel dull in the singleplayer experience. With funny and serious moments through the whole campaign makes it a really great game. Great characters and great story.
The gameplay itself is really solid. With a heavy gun and light gun and special abilities for each of the characaters. Examples are Stealth that gives you the ability to actually sneak up on enemies. The really great thing about this is that the level design actually makes you benefit when you use the ablities and it doesn't feel forced in any of them and go with them without any problem. This makes the gameplay even more diverse and giving players more variation. The player can also transform into a vehicle that makes the gameplay even greater, leaving the player to choose either form and playing as you see fit. Some stages in each level might be better to use in one or the other form. They never feel forced and gives the player the option to play how they want. The player also gets to upgrade weapons, perks, abilities, buying perks, etc. And gives a sense of depth to game.
The multiplayer is really good and gives the player the choice of making the robots to look how they want, giving them different weapons and in the end a lot of choice how they want to play it. There was no issue with lag when i played this.
The graphics has its own style and does stand out to the eye. It really is amazing at times. Especially when looking at cities and the horizon of large buildings. Just showing how great the world looks like.
The voice acting is really good. They really bring the characters to life and brining old actors back from the animated series is also a great plus for fans of the series. The guns sound also really authentic and makes you want to shoot a robot right in the face with great results.
Overall
With players given the choice between abilities, lots of weapons, transforming, great story and just a lot of choice for the player. The story might be linear, but they player gets to choose how they want to play. It never truly feels like you are just passing through and actually experiencing a greay game. If you can look past a few flaws, it is a really great game to have in your library

Sun, 12 May 2013 14:12:36 -0700 The_Last_Ride reviewed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the PlayStation 3... http://www.gamespot.com/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-2/user-reviews/811234/platform/ps3/ ...and gave it a 7.5.

Modern Warfare 2 continues the campaign and the pushes the franchise forward in the modern setting even further. The multiplayer returns as we are used to in the series.
Spec Ops is a nice change of pace making Co-Op avaliable over internet and locally. This mode contains of waves of enemies coming against you and trying to survive with a friend on your side. There are three difficulties for each map, and you are able to test your skills how much you can plan and use skills to get through the waves of enemies.
The multiplayer is also back with new perks, weapons, and levels. This time around there are 10 prestiges to do. If someone wants a real challenge and try to level up again 10 times with all the challenges and weapons, it's a nice change of pace.
The Bad:
The singleplayer is as forgetable as ever. The player takes control over several persons through the campaign and gets you a perspective of things. This had worked, if the story had some sort of depth. But all it really is, is a shallow attempt at an action movie. Some might also be shocked from the infamous airport level, but this game is also labeled as mature. The plot tries to take itself seriously, but when you eventually see plot twists coming from a mile away and all of the levels being very linear. When i mean linear, it's basicly either a stand off trying to survive enemies, escort missions, corridor shooting or simple running from A to B. There are no alternative ways to actually engage the enemy when the actual fire begins. Everything is control with smaller quick time events and very scripted events through the whole story. There are no alternate ways to play the levels. There are intel packs to be collected in each level, but there is barely any exploring. It does not give the player any creativity when it comes to the gameplay itself. The whole singleplayer is basicly just point and shoot with cinematics explosions with forgetable dialogue and characters.

The graphics on the console aren't as good as the pc counterpart, and it shows if you have seen the pc version. Some framerate issues can be seen on the console version.

The Good:
The gameplay is very solid, making tweaks to make it more solid. The gameplay mechanics really shine through in the multiplayer where you can choose your own weapons and perks to your liking and play the way you really want to. The multiplayer has enough depth and options to give the players of this game a good reason to play it.

The sound of the gun mechanics and the game itself are solid, and don't have any real flaws. The guns sound good enough to make the player believe the gun sounds coming out of the actual guns when shooting them.

Spec Ops gives the player also a reason to try out the Co-Op part of the game with several difficulties. Makes it possible to have a friend locally or over internet to play with you. These levels are well designed and could give players that want to explore this part of the game much fun to be had.

Even though most of the singleplayer is plain, the voice actors make it relevant to even take notice of these shallow characters. Making them believable and humane. If there is anything that is good about the singleplayer it would be the voice acting, even though the story and the way the character progress is really shallow.

Overall:
It's a good multiplayer game for those that want either a Co-Op experience or a massive online expeience, then this should be in your collection. But if you want to get this game for it's singleplayer, you should stay away from it. Because it has nothing of depth in there or even worth exploring.

Tue, 07 May 2013 08:26:26 -0700 The_Last_Ride reviewed Assassin's Creed III for the Xbox 360... http://www.gamespot.com/assassins-creed-iii/user-reviews/811091/platform/xbox360/ ...and gave it a 8.0.

In this sequel to the Assassin's Creed games, we visit early colonial America. It starts with Haytham Kenway and him making his way to the new America to search for where his relics may be of use. He is also searching for clues left behind by Minerva and Juno that both Assassin's and Templars are looking for. This part of the story is very linear and serves as an origin story. There is a little plot twist after you are done with his story. After a few hours in you take over Connor, Kenway's son and continue the story from there.
There is a new setting setting in this game never shown before with the forest and animals being a part of the game. Hunting and skinning animals are also part of the game. This game does not have any upgrades when it comes to the home where the character is settled.
The whole setting takes the whole american revolution and takes the fictional characters such as Haytham and Connor and puts them right in the middle of them. They also have real characters such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and other known persons from that era.
The gameplay and combat itself has been changed a little bit. The counter system has been worked on and needs more timing than before. This can make confronting larger more challenging

The bad:
Something that sticks out right away after the beginning is that guards recognize you immediately if you just have one on your notorious level. You get recognized faster when you are on rooftops, it does not give you any incentive to actually climb the houses in the cities of New York and Boston. The posters for you to get noticed less is even removed from your map entirely making it harder for you to lose your character getting noticed by guards.

The modern part of the story also has a bigger role in this, which isn't bad. But the sour note the game. With the game ending on the biggest cliffhanger in the entire Assassin's Creed series. The other ones in the series, might not have a a real ending except for Revelations ending Ezio's and Altairs story. They just leave one big question mark and break the entire series with such a an ending. It will be a big dissapointment for those that have played all of the games and might even anger some.

The new homestead isn't upgradable and doesn't really give you any incentive to go deeper. It gives you more story to some characters if you are invested in the game and want a little more story to it. Some are interesting, but they consist mostly of fetch quests and mostly consist you doing the same with helping them with something they can't do themselves. They can be really tedious to do if you can't get invested in the characters. The upgrades and shipments you do with the homestead are pretty much useless and doesn't really give any depth to the game. Looking at the result of this design decision it is not clear what was suppose to be the meaning of this whole system.

The counter system doesn't always respond the way you want it to, and get often hit even though the timing is good.

The good:
The graphics of this game are a really big upgrade to the previous games in the series, and it is really stunning to watch, wether it is the cutscenes or exploring the world. It is truly beautiful to look at.

The characters of this story are strong, some might be used to the idea of a character of the likes of Ezio and Altair. They have to keep in mind that this is a whole new character, with his own story and problems. The voice acting is great, and give depth to the characters and the story itself. Even though that i have mentioned that the "modern" ending for the game ends on a big cliffhanger, doesn't mean that this game doesn't have a good story. Connors and Haytham's story through this game is really good and worth experiencing.

The audio and sound effects are well made and the mood it sets when traveling in the forest is really important, could have felt really empty if this wasn't case.

The gameplay has also improved. The climbing has never been this fun, even though the game does not give you any real incentive to actually climb and explore the rooftops because of troops, doesn't mean the mechanics for it are bad. Far from it, it's never been this much fun to actually climb which is really sad when the notorious system undermines this mostly.
The combat is more realistic and requires the user to time the counters more, it can be really fun when have a few opponents and really dominate them, but when you have several enemies against you it can work against you.

Overall this is a mixed bag, there is enough though to actually play this game, even though some might be dissapointed with this being the biggest and best in the series, it is far from being a bad game. It is worth a shot if you are an Assassin's Creed fan, but also keep in mind, this might not be the overall best game. I did not encounter many bugs in my Xbox version, but that doesn't mean this is free of bugs and glitches.

A pretty damn good smoothie.Temple Run + Sonic=A pretty damn awesome game. This is a free app and it is worth getting. If you liked all the temple runs then by all means get this really awesome game.I deleted subway surfer because I had this awesome game to replace it so goodbye subway surfer and hello sonic dash, but I didn't delete temple run because that game is too good to be deleted but this game I will NEVER delete it is just so damn awesome.

Fri, 26 Apr 2013 03:21:13 -0700 The_Last_Ride reviewed Assassin's Creed: Revelations for the PlayStation 3... http://www.gamespot.com/assassins-creed-revelations/user-reviews/810689/platform/ps3/ ...and gave it a 8.5.

In this game we catch up with Ezio where he travels to the east and explore new area of the world. We see a very mature Ezio compared to the others, and we notice he is more patient and he has become older. In this new game he starts with basicly new sleight and leaves everyone from Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood. New characters and targets are the focus to refuse the templars to take over this beautiful new city and kingdom. The mechanics are what you are used to in earlier games of the earlier games. It has more upgrades as found in the two earlier games and you are still able to conquer areas and buy shops to upgrade the gear and get more money. This game also introduces bombs which you can use as decoys, distractions and as weapons.

The Bad:
The bad thing that sticks out, is that this game is more of the same and doesn't really have any big new update avaliable for it. There is no graphics update for it, it looks a little better than the others, but doesn't have any real new update. It also lacks in variety when it comes to new missions, they will seem familiar to old players

The Good:
The gameplay has been refined and his better than ever with. New animations and better combat gives it the best combat system to date in the series. The upgrades for the weapon is just as good as the previous game, and doesn't ruin it, but introdouces some new weapons in it instead of just copy and pasting.

The underground puzzles are actually more fun and very well done this time around. They have a total new feel and it's not the same slow paced platform puzzles as the last ones in the series. These are more fun in the sense that you just run through them as fast as possible trying to reach your targets in some of them. The bombs also make for a nice new addition to make the gameplay more dynamic and trying to do something new.

The story starts with a bang, but goes slowly after the first sequence and slowly builds up. This game may lack supporting characters that Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood, but having Altair and fewer stronger characters in this game is refreshing. This game is probably the most heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time in the series. It's a really well told story of both Ezio and the flashbacks of Altair. It's a worthy ending to both Ezio and Altair, and it truly shows us how great of characters those two are.

The setting doesn't have the same flair as the two earlier games in the series, but it's beautiful to look at. It has also challenges for the player to explore as much as the earlier games.

Sun, 21 Apr 2013 23:35:35 -0700 The_Last_Ride reviewed F1 2012 for the Xbox 360... http://www.gamespot.com/f1-2012/user-reviews/810538/platform/xbox360/ ...and gave it a 8.5.

A great technical racing game with the F1 licence. This game is an excellent example of how you use your licence exactly how it is suppose to be used. The Formula 1 has several modes where you can get a challenge out of the game. There is the Proving Grounds, Champions Mode and the Career modes to explore.
Proving grounds is a good way to casual players to be introduced to the game. Championship Mode gives the player a challenge by going against the biggest stars in challenges to beat them. Career mode has the regular mode to be expected out of a career mode. Where the player progresses and gets contracted to the bigger teams and trying to get to the top.
The bad:
The presentation of the game seems generic and has no personality to it. There is a certain slick look to it, but it doesn't really say a lot about the game.
The game can be very punishing for those that aren't very experienced with the game. If you make a mistake it can cost you dearly if you aren't careful. The tutorial does introduce you to the game and what is in it, but it is very short and doesn't have a lot of depth for new players in the series. There is also not a lot of help for newcomers how to tune the car or go deeper. But that can be explored if you have patience and play the game a lot. Experienced players won't have a hard time here.
The Good:
The racing experience might be the most technical in the racing genre to date. If you handle the car right and know what to do with it, then there is a lot of reward for the player and the game will become just plain fun to play.
All of the modes can give you enough challenge for some time, and if you don't find that challenging enough, there is always the option to turn assists off.
The online part of the game is really strong, and can be quite fun. There is no issue with lag spikes in the game, unless the player has a shady internet connection.
The gameplay is solid in every way, though it can take time to get quite the hang of things. It will be fun when you can master tracks and corners on tracks like the stars.
The sound is also magnificent to hear when you play. The roar of the engine is magnificent to hear and really gives life to the game
It's a great game overall, might be a little tough for newcomers. But if you spend some time with the game it is a game to be enjoted for racing lovers.

Sun, 21 Apr 2013 00:14:56 -0700 ad0234 reviewed New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U... http://www.gamespot.com/new-super-mario-bros-u/user-reviews/810485/platform/wii-u/ ...and gave it a 8.0.

Last year has been a significant one for the New Super Mario Bros series, since Nintendo had released two games of it in that year. That isn't to be said it was a very good one. The earlier one, New Super Mario Bros 2, released on the 3DS, was shoved in during the development of the Wii U version, with young, more inexperienced people working on the game, and one that didn't really succeed all too much, because it was simply too similar to it's predecessors, adding barely any novelty to the series. And then there was New Super Mario Bros U. A game with more significant changes and additions, and simply put, a game that savored more professional work and effort. And New Super Mario Bros U is also the first Mario platformer launch title since Super Mario 64 on the N64. Plus the Wii U needed some fresh, exclusive titles for it's launch, since a lot of the launch games were only ports of games already existing on different platforms. Luckily, New Super Mario Bros U, unlike the 3DS version, has succeed in bringing the series back to a more glamorous shine, even though it isn't that kind of launch title to show off the new console's possibilities and strengths.

--- Presentation ---

Believe it or not, but in New Super Mario Bros U, the story actually gets a little twist. Instead of having Bowser and family kidnapping the Princess and taking her to Bowser's own castle, Bowser this time decides to simply take over Peach's castle, throwing Mario and CO. far, far away from the castle, and now it's up to the heroes to make their way back to the castle and save Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser's mighty plans. In every other game such little twist would have absolutely no impact, but for a Mario game, it's actually quite a nice one.

Actually, it is the twists, the little or not so little twists to the New Super Mario Bros formula, that separate this game from it's predecessors. In a nutshell, New Super Mario Bros U is what you expect, and what you've come to know. You have to make your way through eight different worlds in order to defeat Bowser and save Peach and the Kingdom, each world contains it's own typical theme, you'll always encounter a level count that retains the ca. 8-10 levels per world, and so on.

Making your way back to the castle instead of moving away from it gave the developers an opportunity to give the game another load of novelty they have missed. Since your way to the final stand of Bowser is more the exact opposite direction than it is usual, it would have been more than fitting to have some dramatic shift in world themes and the order of them. Instead, New Super Mario Bros U has pretty much the exact same world themes as well as order like in the previous New Super Mario Bros games. Yet, New Super Mario Bros U gives each world theme a new, little twist to make them feel at least a little different.

And another, much better twist of New Super Mario Bros U: It's the first of the New Super Mario Bros games to contain a big, full featured world map with all the smaller worlds fit into it, making the vibrant and rich world of Mario viewable in a whole. It's smaller worlds are connected great with each other, the path Mario must take through the main worlds takes you everywhere, and the different world themes make for a colorful and detailed world map. Not only does it look beautiful, but it also adds a better sense of an actual adventure happening. During any time you may scroll around the map and take a peak at where the adventure will take you, and adding to the charm, the game tosses a few cut scenes that show what happens to the castle while Mario's on his way to that destination. And one last note: the game's world map also contains extra content such as enemies and powerups wondering around the world map, as well as a few other clever features, including some little by-the-by minigames, and hidden paths that must be found, making the world map part of the fun.

As far as the new features of the Wii U go, New Super Mario Bros U doesn't take that much usage of them. It's the best launch title to show off the off-screen play, but the touchscreen is only used for multiplayer, with some good yet limited use of it, and the visuals do not push the graphical abilities of Nintendo's system at all. Don't get me wrong, though, this isn't counted as a negative.

What does seem like a negative is that it seems like Nintendo took it quite easy with this game and made it themselves quite comfortable. They did put a lot of thought and polish into this game, but you'll also notice that they only did that, what was really necessary. Take the visuals, for example. Seeing the typical New Super Mario Bros visual style shine in HD, with backgrounds finally being 3D and getting lots of depth really is great. Actually, there are multiple beautiful and impressive looking backgrounds here to be admired. However, seeing the game recycling backgrounds for multiple levels is a bit odd. Or take the animations. Seriously, Nintendo took the amount of newly created animations to the possible minimum, making some cutscenes look a bit dated.

However, what's absolutely not acceptable is the soundtrack. It's still heavily the soundtrack from the Wii game, with some more, new tracks than New Super Mario Bros 2 had, but it's still lame having to hear so many tracks from the Wii game a third time. It's reaching a limit where the music just comes soaring out of people's ears right after entering them, and it's pretty frustrating and odd to see that Nintendo was so lazy with the game's soundtrack when considering that Nintendo puts a lot of effort into making good music for most of their games.

--- Gameplay ---

Just as the presentation, New Super Mario Bros U's gameplay is very familiar. Like usual for a 2D platformer game, you guide Mario from left to right, avoiding the usual obstacles while snagging powerups to enlarge your chance of success and coins to collect 1-Ups, which are as easy to become as stomping yet another Goomba. Controls are, weirdly, even better than ever. Mario has all of his typical moves at disposal, and he controls as if you're controlling him with your own thoughts. Level Design in New Super Mario Bros U is even more creative than ever, offering the best levels of the series so far, with some meaty challenge after the first 4 worlds of the game, and the 3 Star Coins in each to find, some of them hidden cleverly, while some other are hard to reach. Not to forget the occasional secret exits that unlock hidden paths among the world map. It's all quite familiar yet all still so fun. And like stated before, it's not as if the game hasn't improved over it's predecessors, since it's got clearly the best level design of all four games. And there is some innovation in the level design; a few new ideas and objects as well as a combination of 2 familiar ideas that haven't been combined within a level before make for some innovation, though not much. The majority of the levels seem rather familiar, just better and more cleverly designed than ever.

It's outside of the level design where the game picks more up in novelty. Baby Yoshi's can be found on the world map which than follow you from level to level, until you die or lose them, granting Mario some unique, new powers. Meanwhile, Nabbit, a totally new character to the Mario Universe, steals Mushrooms from Mushroom houses and hides in specific levels, who you then have to chase down in the level he hides in. A much different, but nice addition is the integration of Miiverse. It lets you state your opinion about levels you've just played, while at the same time let's comments from many different people appear on the world map. It really is these touches that make the game stand out from the other ones and let it feel fresh.

And of course, this game can be experienced, just like the Wii one, with multiple friends among your side. While the main four players still play the same role and characters, a fifth player can join the Mustache-Mushroom fun and create platforms out of thin air, as well as interact with some enemies and platforms. The multiplayer is as fun and chaotic as ever, and definitely a particularly great offering for parties. The addition of a fifth player engaging himself with a kind of god-mode is a nice one, though it's probably not as fun as playing as one of the 4 main characters. It can however be a great help for inexperienced gamers, or a great option for those who aren't very good at platformer games and just want to join the fun fast and easy. Oh, and if you're up for some competitive play, Coin Battle mode is the perfect choice. It's the same as in the Wii game, yet a bit more competitive this time around.

Snagging a copy of New Super Mario Bros U will also mean you'll have quite an impressive amount on content to discover. The lengthy main game is only part of what forms New Super Mario Bros U, as there are also two additional modes, Boost Rush Mode and Challenge Mode. Boost Rush Mode is about mastering side scrolling levels as fast as possible, speeding up the scrolling by collecting coins, which is accessible from one to five players. The real surprise is challenge mode. This mode tosses challenges towards you that rate from one star (fairly challenging) to 5 stars(super-enormous-tough), in which you can get a bronze medal, silver medal or gold medal. Or of course a fail. These challenges take place either in totally new terrains or in levels from the main game, and it's incredibly fun to try to beat each challenge, and succeeding in them is tremendously satisfying. They are also quite varied, and only the fewest are less than good or frustrating.

--- Verdict ---

It's simple: New Super Mario Bros U prefers to deliver an experience not very different from it's predecessors, while at the same time, never falling into the category "predictable". Sure, there are some overly predictable parts in the game. But others, like the sudden appearance of an classic Mario enemy in glorious HD on your TV screen that hasn't been seen since the mighty Super Mario World, or a level with a theme unlike any other level seen before in the New Super Mario Bros series, form some truly great moments of the game. You won't be able to shake off the familiar feel the game has, but these new, little twists make sure you will be getting enough "new" to keep you playing.

In fact, New Super Mario Bros U is without a doubt the best entry into it's series yet, as well as one of the launch titles worth to get for the Wii U. It's level design is always creative and fun, it is an overall challenging and satisfying game with lots of secrets, it's got some cool bosses and a very epic final battle, and, unlike the 3DS version, it's able to separate itself from it's predecessors, with new features and innovations, new, additional modes, in particular challenge mode, that add variety, novelty and more fun content as well as HD graphics with much nicer visuals. It's definitely not a good showcase of the Wii U, and does not present next-generation gaming in any ways, but that isn't a negative at all. What does disturb at some occasions is when you do notice that it could have been more, it could have been grander, as Nintendo did stay relatively save with this title, not taking too many risks (and yes, even in terms of level design that is). But it's still an incredibly enjoyable game that is definitely worth getting.

The Good
+ creative, varied and challenging levels
+ fun and cool boss battles
+ Incredible controls
+ Nice HD visuals
+ a full world map with all the little worlds connected with each other adds to the experience and looks really good
+ new features and other innovations give the game a fresh enough feeling, while still featuring many throwbacks
+ Multiplayer is a blast
+ great use of Miiverse

The Bad
- Recycled music, again
- occasionally predictable
- game lies on the safe side

Review Score: 8.0/10

Tomb Raider has a whole new take on Lara Croft and her adventures. It starts with a young version of Lara Croft shipwrecked on a mysterious island and she finds herself lost and captured by a bunch of mystics that worships an ancient goddess.
The Bad:
If there is anything bad about it it would be that the multiplayer seems tacked on and isn't really necessary for the game. Even though the multiplayer has some potential it has too few modes and variety to make it compete with other multiplayer games in the action genre.
The Good:
The story is great, it's not over the top, but has some sci-fi elements to it. It's a perfect balance and make Lara really stand out. The other characters are great and support Lara making this a strong story. But in the end it is Lara's story, she really stands out and it shows her struggle and courage through the entire game. The pacing of the game is also really good. You don't start out guns blazing, but has a carefully thought beginning. It starts slowly and then goes deep into what the island is and who Lara really is. She seems scared and vulnerable at first, but her courage is huge and really makes Lara a strong character.
The gameplay is really strong and you can upgrade weapons and skills that make the way you play and your tools more effective as you progress through the game. It is deep enough to explore and have fun with. The puzzles through the game can be very challenging to some, and you might have to search the net for some walkthroughs. In the end they can also be done with patience and a little thought.
The island has really it's own life and brings life to the game with animals and it's own mystisism. The different areas are really well thought out and sometimes just looking at the view of the island can be stunning.
The graphics are really stunning. Just looking at the ocean or hunting deer, it is a really beautiful game and it shines through that the style they went for this game.
The voiceover for all the characters and Lara are top notch and gives more life to Lara and her fellow crew members and the island itself. It also gives all of the characters more credibility and makes the story better overall.
The audio is spot on and doesn't too much and doesn't too little to make anything overly dramatic, but doesn't overlook anything either.
If you like Action games, and a little more adult take on the Tomb Raider series it is a must have.

Rhythm Thief & the emperor's treasure can be found in most game shops for quite cheap now, i bought it for $20 and although the game is quite short (8 hours or so) it does have replay value so i feel it was money well spent.
The story take's place in Paris France which is a refreshing change, i don't ever remember playing a game set in France before so immediately i was interested in what was going on. So basically you play as a boy called Raphael who is leading a double life, when he is not Raphael he is Phantom R! Phantom R steals artwork from museums but then later returns them from where he stole them, confusing eh? Well i wont spoil the story.

Gameplay consists of rhythm mini game's, for example some times you have to sneak into places and to do that you must hide behind bushes in time with the music, sounds weird but that is how the story is told, with lots of mini games. Now there are many mini games to play and you get rated depending on how well you did, during the later games it gets quite hard to get an A rating and also i encountered a glitch on a couple of games where it wouldn't let me get an A so i hope nobody else has that problem.

The music is really good to and you will be wanting to replay the mini games over and over, the voice acting was ok, nothing special but it doesn't ruin the game at all. It also has some pretty good cut scene's and the controls were always responsive so overall i think this game is great, i would love to see another one made because i liked the character's and iv become quite the fan of Phantom R!

If you have some spare cash and are a fan of music/rhythm games then you must own this game. I would have given it a 10 had it not been for the glitches stopping me from getting A's, i feel like i can't fully complete the game which is a big shame! You can download a demo for this game on the eshop.

Wed, 10 Apr 2013 15:37:05 -0700 The_Last_Ride reviewed Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood for the PlayStation 3... http://www.gamespot.com/assassins-creed-brotherhood/user-reviews/810073/platform/ps3/ ...and gave it a 9.0!

This game takes Ezio to Rome and goes deeper in to the story of the Borgias. The story this time around is a little shorter, but has all the supporting characters that were helping Ezio in his first game.

The bad:
The recipe hasn't changed much since Assassin's Creed 2 and will seem very familiar to some that might expect something entirely new. It doesn't really do anything revolutionary compared to what happened between Assassin's Creed 1 and 2. It doesn't make anything major new to the game. There isn't a lot of depth in the new assassin training system.

there are some framerate issues here and there that can be noticable and some minore bugs when climbing.

The good:
First of all, the story is really really good. Though the story might be shorter, it is still very good. You also have more to do when it comes to upgrades, training assassins and buying shops, collecting Flags, getting Romulus keys, assassinations, etc.
Exploring Tombs is something that was tedious work in Assassin's Creed 2, where the was little to no variation. This has been improved in Brotherhood. Upgrading shops has even more to it, then the last game, and if the player wants to explore this side of the game it has more depth than in the second game in the series.
Assassinating Captains gives you a challenge to get more upgrades, shops, landmarks and viewpoints in the game that makes the player play a little different. Training Assassins can be fun to explore and is a great new feature. Giving you help when needed in certain missions. There is still a lot to do in the game. Everything the game does new and old is refined. Mechanics that were annoying or tedious in the last game have been made to actually be exciting. As en example of that; parkour is more fun than ever and the game has constantly something to do for you wether it is just following the main story or for you to explore Rome with Ezio.

The story is still as good as every game in the series and keeps on having a strong support cast in this game. The story of betrayal and the suffering that Ezio still has to go through with losing family is still strong in this game, and keeps him going as a character.

The setting is as good as the last game, giving it warmth and a huge game to explore with either climbing known places or just watching how beautiful this game really is.

The graphics is still beautiful to look at, and the city sure takes care of that. Even though the engine for this game hasn't been updated, it is still a pretty game to look at

If you want this game to have a drastically change to the mechanics and story, then this is probably something not for you. But if you want a refined game that refines everything and does it very well.

Tue, 26 Mar 2013 17:44:49 -0700 ad0234 reviewed The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the PC... http://www.gamespot.com/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/user-reviews/809408/platform/pc/ ...and gave it a 9.0!

I still remember the first time I started Skyrim on my PC as one of the first PC games I had bought. Quite some time has past by since I've done that. But no wonder, after being astound by the visuals, I found out what was so amazing about Skyrim: I had never seen such a huge world within a video game before. After the introduction and first few hours with the game I knew I wouldn't regret the purchase of Skyrim.

---Presentation---

Skyrim gets a lot right, that's for sure. For one, the story is very entertaining and quite gripping. You play a character who was accidentally accused by the empire, which rules Skyrim, for belonging to the enemy (there's a war between the empire and rebels) and is supposed to lose his head. He/she gets saved by an sudden attack of a dragon, a creature that is actually said to be extinct, since the chaos the dragon causes gives him/her the chance to flee with the help of some other people. During the story you'll find out that the Dragons are back to take over Skyrim, and as it comes your character is the only one able to stop the evil dragons from mischievous plans. It's an exciting story that evolves in a good pace.

Of course, the main story is only the core foundation of what is to happen in this game. Along your way, choices you make affect the story a lot. Actually, you are the one who can decide how the story shall go on. While the main story will end the way it is supposed to end eventually, you may decide how your relation ship to different people are, are able to make crucial decisions that make one group of people to your friends, and another to your foes. And of course, you may decide whether you'd like to be on the good side, or the bad side. You even decide if you want to become a warrior, magician or even a thief. Skyrim has a lot of freedom where you self are able to decide what kind of person your character is, and are able to create your own story. With that said, while it is nice to be able to make such big decisions, the consequences of a few of the little decisions aren't always fitting. The majority yes, but sometimes the consequences of decisions you make are quite incomprehensible. Other times it also felt like the developers had squeezed in one or two too many different decisions to make, when multiple decisions had the same consequence, even though they were two quite different decisions made.

Another reason why Skyrim is gorgeous are the beautiful visuals. The many landscapes of Skyrim are beautiful to have a sight of. There's an incredible amount of details in the world of Skyrim, which can be considered surprising since Skyrim is so huge. Textures are also mostly good, though taking a close look at some objects might end with some unpleasant pictures. Despite some rather muddy looking objects, it's still an outstanding looking game. The same can't be said about the soundtrack. It contains some great tracks, but not very many memorable tracks. Actually there isn't a hell of a lot of music appearing in the game, a lot of the time there isn't any music at all to be heard, and it seems quite random when the music does appear, which does make for some unfitting moments of when the music suddenly starts to play again.

By all means though, what really makes Skyrim so special is that it presents us such an lively, beautiful and exciting world to explore. The world brims of charm, the game represents so many different areas, among them very different kingdoms, so many different characters with personality and other life; it really is amazing what Bethesda has done with Skyrim. They have put so much effort into this game to really give you the feel you're exploring a real, huge world. Not unexpected, but unfortunately, there are quite some glitches and other issues that hold the world of Skyrim back at times. The misleading consequences are only the beginning of many little annoyances that ruin the immersion of Skyrim's world at times. Glitches like getting stuck in environments aren't too common, but they do happen. I don't know about you, but I do perceive it as darn strange when a Mammoth suddenly takes off into the air and lands safe short after the take off. Also, while many people in the game have quite some personality to them, I did encounter people who all shared the same sentences. Which isn't really anything bad, though it also seems very weird when over twenty guardians all seemingly have a cousin who is allowed to fight dragons, meanwhile they have to do their generic, average job as guard. Well maybe they all share the same cousin, an unlikely but still possible solution. Another situation that bothered me quite a bit was the one time where an old lady had died and was lying in the middle of a street. After I had once left and then come back, the lady was still lying there. But the stupid part is still to follow: Whenever a guard who walked along the pathway came along the dead body, he said something like "oh geez, what happened here", knelt down, then stood up again and walked further on. After turning back and coming along the dead body, he did the same thing again. The chances you notice something like that isn't high, but if you do, it really does ruin a bit of the immersion of the world for you. The same goes for dead Dragon bodies, that like to lie in the middle of a way quite some time. Sure, this doesn't have to be unrealistic, but when people suddenly walk through the bones and pretend their isn't anything lying in the way, you do get an awkward impression.

---Gameplay---

Despite my complaints about the presentation of the game, it's still outstanding in general. The same goes for the Gameplay. Right from the beginning you'll be involved in some great action, with battles that look and play great. The main Gameplay aspect of Skyrim is simply traveling through the world and finding all the different areas, always finding more and more content as if it seems that the game does not know what an ending means. And in actual, it doesn't. There are so many different places to find, and so many different missions to complete, that I hardly believe anybody really is able to complete the game with a 100 %. And even if you do have found all locations throughout the whole entire world of Skyrim (which, again, is very unlikely), there are still the many different attributes of your character that you can always improve until there isn't any more to improve. And I'm sure there will always be some foes to have a fight against.

Of course, the game would probably wear out sometime. The main reason why Bethesda had put so much work into creating a world as huge as the one in Skyrim isn't because they expected their player's to explore every single spot in the world, but that players get the feeling their adventure is taking place in what could be a real world, which also leads to even more motivation exploring at least a part of the present world. And it really works. Whenever I come across yet another cave leading into the undergrounds, it's hard to resist for me not to take a peak into the cave. And mostly it ends with me going through the whole cave, beating the baddies that get in my way and coming out with yet another completed mini-adventure that might even be very likely a part of an mission you don't even know about yet. And it's always good to find more and more places since you can fast-travel to any of these places whenever you need to. Also, seeing always more places popping up on your huge overworld map is quite satisfying.

The amount of missions is just as mind-boggling. Granted, I don't know how many there are in numbers, but I know there are a lot. I've got many on my "to do" list, I have done already a lot, and I'm absolutely sure I haven't even seen a quarter of the missions in Skyrim. The missions are also very varied. Find someone or something, bring an object to a specific place or clear off a cage from all monsters in it, these missions are varied enough and most of them are entertaining, at least the ones I've played. The game also always indicates where exactly to go to complete the mission, which guarantees that you won't be stuck on missions because you don't know where to go. That is, except when a glitch appears that let's the arrow disappear, which should normally indicate where to go: then you've got a problem. Luckily, this glitch is a very rare one.

Of course you've got the freedom and can mostly decide which mission you want to do and which not, except the missions that are required for the story mode and other missions that are part of another type of a adventure you choose to take. The freedom of the game really is an awesome part of the game. For instance: you get to make the crucial decision whether to become a magician, thief or warrior. To become a magician for example, you'll have to visit the magic academy, which will then start a kind of totally new adventure for you, that's totally separate from the main adventure, which will then confront you with many more, new missions that become mandatory if you want to end that adventure as well. It really is fun to decide what your character shall become, and to create your own story of your own character.

One thing I didn't talk about yet is the combat: a very important aspect of the game. And it's fun generally. There are tons of different weapons, armor and other spells you can learn to help you in battles (you've guessed it, you can even make your own weapons and armor), and it's really fun using the many different attacks against your enemies, finding out which one's are the best. And combat is quite satisfying as well. No matter with what you battle your enemy, seeing him finally fall is pretty satisfying, especially when special death-scenes occur. Just watch out, as you never know if you're already powerful enough to battle against a specific enemy, or not. It probably won't always end good. Combat isn't masterful though. Without a lock-on system, it's easy to miss your enemy when in a steamy fight, which can make up for some briefly frustrating moments. What really can get a little frustrating however is when you slash right through an enemy and he doesn't take any damage. Doesn't happen too often, but the collision-system isn't always precise.

If there's anything I really have to complain about the gameplay, than it is the check point system. Since there isn't anyone, actually. The game saves automatically whenever you enter an area, house, cave or whatever. But otherwise, there's no automatic saving. Sure, I know, a proper check point system wouldn't be easy to do in a game like Skyrim, but always having to think of saving the game yourself can become a tiny bit annoying, and maybe even interrupt the gameplay a little bit. The real problem of this is simply that whenever you die, you get sent back to your last saving point. And if you have forgotten to save during a long period of time, you might just have to replay a whole lot you had played before. It happened to me once or twice and it wasn't a nice experience. Not at all.

---Verdict---

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an exceptional game. Exceptional when it comes to size, freedom, imagination and design. The main story will lead you through many exciting locations and moments, and it's only one little fraction of what is to be found in the game. But instead of just squeezing in a lot of content into a game without giving it a lot of thought and attention, most of what is to experience in Skyrim is a simple joy, with incredibly lots of content and lots to do, may it be exploring the huge world or trying to pump your many different attributes, and the game makes sure that the game still has a lot of content to be discovered after you finally get tired of the game. Put all remaining issues together in one game that mar Skyrim and you will be confronted with some of Skyrim's weaker moments not too rarely, but compare it with all the positives in the game that deserve to be mentioned, and the issues of the game seem undeniable tiny. No matter how long you expect the game to entertain, you'll be satisfied in the end. It is an everlasting game.

The Good
+ An absolutely gigantic, lively and gripping world that will always have much more content to be discovered than you plan on to discover
+ Huge number of missions with lots of variety, most of them entertaining
+ Beautiful visuals
+ Good main adventure that should keep you hooked until the end
+ A lot of freedom that lets you create your own story of your character
+ satisfying combat with many, many different fighting options
+ Overload on content that you will most likely never ever experience totally

The Bad
- technical problems and other weird moments ruin a bit of the immersion Skyrim's world creates
- automatic saving system barely even exists

Review Score: 9.0

Sun, 24 Mar 2013 13:02:23 -0700 The_Last_Ride reviewed Assassin's Creed II for the PlayStation 3... http://www.gamespot.com/assassins-creed-ii/user-reviews/809311/platform/ps3/ ...and gave it a 9.5!

Assassin's Creed continues the story of Desmond exploring his ancestors in the Animus. The story this time takes place in Italy. Where you meet known persons like Leonardo Da Vinci and other significant important historic characters.

The bad:
There are some issues with the framerates at some locations which can be very annoying. Camera angles and controls can be frustrating when climbing in certain areas or scenario's. AI can seem to see through walls or just keep hunting you longer than they should be able to at some points. Glitch that made me assassinate a target without even doing something(therefore completing the mission without even doing it).

The Good:
The story is very well done and built up over time in this game. We see Ezio from birth to arrogant teenager rebel to an adult assassin. The story has strong characters in both villains and sidekicks. Ezio also shines on his own. His loss of family and gaining a new identity as an Assassin is something very important to the story. Seing this character grow up and dealing with issues of loss and morale choices makes the character strong and believable.

The gameplay has been changed and tuned. Everything about the first game which concerns combat, quests, sidequests crafting, etc. They have managed to make a much better game than the previous one in all aspects. The free climbing and synchronizing towers have never been this much fun. It's pretty much effortless and fun to climb them. It can also be more challenging trying to climb towers, churches etc. The so called Scroll of Romulus lairs can be challenging puzzles to solve. It also gives a slower pace to the game and can be great to explore if you want to. These are optional for players off course.

You can explore the world to a much bigger degree also where you can have races, contracts to do hits on specific targets outside the main quests, hunting codex pages, upgrading your armor and improve on your city.
The graphics have also a distinct artstyle and shines through more in this game where you travel to Venice, Florence and Tuscany. The sites can be quite beautiful to look at and all the cities and location all have their own character to give to the game.

It has a lot to offer, and if you ignore the small imperfections you will have a blast playing this game. It's a lot better than the second game, and if you enjoyed the second a little bit or just enjoy action games in general you should try this game out

Heroes: Might & Magic 3 is a great game in a fantasy setting where you can play a campaign or just have a fun skirmish by yourself or with buddies and just have a great time. The game has a turn based battle systen and good economic system for you to manage.
The bad:
The battles can be somewhat repetative in some points. Some of factions are a little unevenly balanced. For instance is Conflux majorly underpowered from all the factions. Inferno also has some balance issues concerning starters and middle level guys
The Good:
Everything about this game is sublime. The faction are pretty well balanced and there are enough factions for you to choose from and heroes to use. There are many mythic creatures you can take to your liking. Tactics, army building, economic and managing heroes with them. It has very strategic pieces in it that makes the game stand out and worth playing. The battles are great and the progression making your hero better when you win battles or find chests with xp. This can be both strategically good or bad relying on one hero only. If you loose this hero, he is gone for good and all the progression is gone. The game can be brutally hard and fair at the same time. This game is what future games should take a note from in the turn based fantasy genre.

Fri, 08 Mar 2013 17:35:12 -0800 The_Last_Ride reviewed Assassin's Creed for the PlayStation 3... http://www.gamespot.com/assassins-creed/user-reviews/808525/platform/ps3/ ...and gave it a 7.0.

This is the first game where you take part of the Assassin's Creed where the goal is to fight power grabbing individuals that brainwash people. You play as the character Alltair. Who is an Assassin in a order who has to redeem himself after doing himself and others wrong and start from scratch to regain honor.
The bad:
The gameplay suffers from clunky and doesn't always work at times. The blending function is also clunky making you blend in to the crowd making you choose not a route chosen by you. The fighting can also be very tedious at times and is just not that great. The quests are basicly the same through the whole game, the only way to get some variety is to do the sidequests. The alert system also seems to be lacking a deeper function.
The good:
The parkour is stellar in the game, and does very much right here. It is truly fun to run over rooftops and just have plain fun doing that. The story is also very good and has strong characters all the way. The voice over is good and makes them believable characters.

I would say it's a good story with great freerunning, but with quests and combat that is very repetative

Some might call this a copy of temple run but I find it really great and not much of a copy of temple run.I find temple run better then this but this game is still a very great rocking game. This game is used with your fingers and may slow down sometimes but it still it a great and addictive game to play. This game has a lot of great stuff in it.This is a free game on the app store this game's new update makes the game even better this game has been fixed with all of its slowing down it use to have but now that is all fixed. This game is good and is a very great passable game on the iPod/iPhone or any other device that this game is on.You will not be disappointed when you get this rocking game it is great and deserves at least a 7.0 out of 10.This game has all the things you need in it.You should really get this game because hey it free and is a very fun and addictive game to play.

Mon, 04 Feb 2013 07:07:59 -0800 The_Last_Ride reviewed Dragon Ball Z Budokai HD Collection for the Xbox 360... http://www.gamespot.com/dragon-ball-z-budokai-hd-collection/user-reviews/807084/platform/xbox360/ ...and gave it a 9.5!

The HD version of Dragonball Z: Budokai shows you how a game can age very well and still look good even after 8 years since it was released. This is a perfect example of how an HD collection should be made.
The bad:
They did not add anything to the game, one could argue that is a good or a bad thing. But this game did not have online mode 8 years ago. They could have added it since this game is very competitive and could have been a great feature for the game. Also The first Budokai game shows clearly it has it struggles as a fighting game, but it is a nice addition to the HD version and it gives you a different feel then the third game.
It might be hard for new users of this game to unlock everything asnd might use guides to unlock all characters and modes
The Good:
Everything is good about the game, that was good 8 years ago. Everything about Budokai 3 has aged very well and is still one of the best fighters there are this millenium.
The game also aged very well, with graphics that looked sharp on the ps2, look even sharper now. But the graphics is something that has aged really well and has not required the most attention i believe.
The basic combat is also very solid, and can still compete with games that are made today. That is saying something about how good this game still is. The teleportation and ki managment makes the game more tactical. Button mashing won't help you at all when playing this game
Audio in this game is also really sharp, and is one of the best aspects of the games. There is something very satifying doing punches and getting the sound for that. Also the rest of the ultamate attacks are still very well done.
The game might be a little harder for newcomers to enjoy, but the story doesn't take a whole lot of time if you want to get to know the story of Dragonball Z.

If you want a solid fighter that still is great today, then get this game. It's such a great fighteing game
