And yes, I agree. This IS VW's best album. As a big Vampire Weekend fan, I remember being skeptical initially after hearing "Step" and "Diane Young", (the pitch shifting on the latter annoyed me at first) but after hearing all of the songs, it all comes together, and never feels boring, obnoxious, and no fillers are in sight.

This is a landmark artistic statement from the group in my personal opinion. I need to fully listen to the album several more times to grasp all of its wonderful details, but trust me when I say this is some of the best music from the golden Indie era of the late 2000's and early 2010's. You will not regret it.

Highlights (Well, the whole album is a highlight)

He didn't pull me from a burning building or rescue me from a frozen lake. But when I was suffering from a depression that had me constantly on the brink of suicide, he was the man who kept me on this side of the abyss.

He was my therapist, but that word is so clinical, and doesn't accurately describe who Dan was to me. Friend? Yes, even though I usually only saw him in the confines of the office of a mental health clinic in Warren, PA. Father figure is more accurate, I suppose, but whatever you call him, he was the one that convinced me that life was worth living. His office was the safest place on the planet. It was there that I felt most vulnerable, and most cared for. He is the reason I am still here today, rather than a memory, or at very least, rather than a human husk, withering away in a hospital for the remainder of my days.

He shared with me stories that a professional therapist shouldn't generally be sharing with his patient, and yet it was exactly the right thing to do in my case. I would record myself playing Christmas music on cassette tape and give it to him as a Christmas gift. I went to a church where he was a guest pastor one Sunday and marveled that this man could radiate such kindness and generosity. I read about his exploits with his boy scout troop, and wondered if those young men knew how fortunate they were that someone like Dan could be in their lives.

I also know that Dan was an imperfect man. But I wasn't prepared to discover that several weeks ago, this man responsible for me being here to share this story today went missing. Vanished from his house, his wallet and keys left behind. No note, no goodbye to his wife Penny, no sign of a break in, no indication that something was wrong. He was simply gone.

The police have searched, and the Conewango Creek and local branch of the Allegheny River have been scoured. No one knows if Dan, at the age of 69, wandered off to take his own life, or fell into the river and was washed away. Perhaps he was discontent and troubled, and decided to travel where he couldn't be found and live out his last days in peace. Perhaps he simply went for a walk to some unknown place and suffered a heart attack, and hasn't been found in spite of the exhaustive search.

But it doesn't seem that Dan is coming back.

The last time I talked to Dan was a few years ago. He sent me an email entitled "The real story...for those with a warped sense of humor." It was a typical viral email that people might send, this one with pictures of fairy tale princesses as they might have ended up. Snow White with her several babies and a good-for-nothing prince sitting in front of the TV. An obese Little Red Riding Hood wandering through the forest, sipping on a Big Gulp and carrying a basket full of bread. It certainly wasn't the most socially sensitive communication, but it's what I have.

I love you Dan. I hope that you are close to God now.

Edit: My mom shared this YouTube link with me of Dan leading vespers in 2012. http://youtu.be/dmVaCIoxeI0

Since Sony is going to possibly announce the PS4 this Wednesday and I hear about 720 rumors I might as well talk about them.

PS4 to have streaming for PS3 games

Looks like PS4 will allow you to play PS3 games after all...through streaming. You need to be online at all times to play PS3 games on it. Might as well own a PS3 in that case for full control and avoid connection issues though it's more convenient to play them on PS4.

PS4 might have a screen on controller

There have been prototypes of the PS4 controller to have a screen on it. I wouldn't mind it as long as it's done well.

PS4 to be 400 bucks

I'm fine with that, though I don't buy consoles at launch, only later.

PS4 to make you pay an online pass when buying used games

Eh, as long as I can play the game used...

720 to have 500GB hard drive, Blu Ray and Kinect

I'm fine with the 1st 2 but they need to improve Kinect for games, Kinect is mainly a success in sales, not in high quality games though.

720 to block used games

Probably the most insane rumor of them all. I don't see it happening and if they go for it I would be shocked. There's so many things wrong with it, like:

Can't find that rare game new since used copies don't exist

Makes renting games impossible with not enough copies

This will make it so games won't drop as fast, longer to wait to get that game you want for a reasonable price

Allows devs to exploit their practices

Killing the used game market

Yeah I don't see this happening. Can't wait until Wednesday though!

Rockstar has finally revealed that the game will come to consoles in the second quarter of 2013, an announcement fans are undoubtedly excited about. After all, what's new that the company prepared to compensate the agony of those who can not wait to return to Los Santos? Unfortunately, we still have to wait a while longer to find out, as the publisher continues its silent policy regarding details on the fifth game in the franchise, releasing new information in small doses -- to our despair. On the other hand, this does not stop us from speculating. While no novel feature has been confirmed, our expectations lie in improvements around what already exists. For as grand and exciting as the games are, they are not perfect. There is always that edge that needs to be trimmed so that the result is even better. But instead of talking about what I want out of GTA V, I decided to just list the points that I dont want to see in GTA V. You know that one feature that made you twist your face in one of the previous games? Chances are theyre exactly what I want out of what is already touted as one of next years most anticipated games.

worst-five-gta-v.jpg

Girlfriends and inconvenient friends

We're obviously not talking about your social life outside of video games, but within them. One of GTAs notable features is focusing on a protagonists non-criminal life, showing that they are also people who come out to have fun and meet new people. The problem is when this game disrupts their "work". Who honestly didnt got angry on hearing the phone ring and discover that your friend wants to go bowling or your girlfriend wants to go to a new restaurant at the exact moment you're doing an important mission or engaged in a police chase? Exploring this social side was at times and brought many possibilities, but it was poorly executed. The phone calls that arose in the worst situations, forced the player into change his route to satisfy the character with whom he made a point. We want GTA, not Sims. This does not mean, however, that Im not up for any side-quests. They give life to the world and makes everything more interesting. In this case, Id rather do them any time I want, not when somebody calls me in a middle of a mission. Flirting and hanging out with friends are cool, as long as it does not break the rhythm of the game's central activity.

Exaggerated realism

One of Rockstars secrets on GTAs success is betting on a formula that combines extreme realism with fantastical elements that would never be possible in the streets of real cities. After all, who ever imagined taking a car would be easy regardless of any traffic law? In Los Santos, the police are unforgiving. That's exactly what we do not want to lose in the new game. Some of the rumors surrounding GTA V state that the police will be more attentive. Even "minor" crimes such as speeding or passing a red light will earn you a star on the meter pursuit. Actually, this is an issue that can potentially divide opinion. On one hand, it may be an interesting addition. That would put more realism, so long as the arrest is ordered only if you are caught red-handed. Under these conditions, I wont complain. However, if it happens automatically I still get caught regardless, it can turn frustrating fairly quickly. Much of the fun sandbox-type games is stepping on the gas and destroying everything that appears in front of you, despite what the DMV Los Santos has to say. Half of that charm dies if you are forced to stop in traffic or have to escape the car all the time.

Weapon customization

GTA is not primarily a shooter, even with its extensive list of available weapons. The essence of the series has always been something looser where the fun is you approach a particular situation. That's why customization and equipment evolution is risky. Improving your weapons can be quite useful in other games, but it does not always fit. Think about how often you actually cared about every single weapon used in previous games. Virtually none, right? That's because what makes the franchise so much fun is exactly the uncompromising freedom we have at our disposal. In the end, we do not care if that rifle because 12 or 15 damage, but if he is able to kill one opponent before the police arrive. Risking this approach can make GTA V to approach many third-person shooter games of out there - something that we do not want in any way.

Multiplayer

One of the worst trends of this generation is that everything has to have multiplayer. Games that were heavily focused on the single player campaign received an extra mode so you can challenge or collaborate with others. Although some titles like Assassins Creed III have managed to bring something unique and deviate from shooting other people in the face others have not. Rockstar has put multiplayer modes in previous GTA games, but the results were never satisfactory. As much as the idea of putting everyone in town in a huge Deathmatch looks interesting, it is shallow and does not have a lasting impact. That's why, in GTA V, we want a multiplayer thats actually worth investing hours in. The idea of exploring Los Santos in online mode can even be reused, provided that we have different ways to explore the vastness of the map optimally. If Rockstar is able to create something different and implement creative ways to explore multiplayer, Im on board. Otherwise, Rockstar should stick with the single player, a fact that they do best.

Zombie mode

By all that is holy in this world, thats enough! Zombies are cool, but that's no excuse to put them in everything. see it as more of a joke, especially when games introduce "new" modes that arent exactly new. I kindly ask Rockstar to not do the same with GTA V. This basically started with Red Dead Redemption, but because the game entered in a context entirely consistent with the proposed theme. Moreover, killing hordes of zombies can get old fast. The whole infestation has lasted three years is no longer amusing to me., In fact, it is absurd youre to do something slightly different, let the dead out in their tombs and bet on another niche, like dinosaurs, aliens or anything else - but no more zombies!

I could go on about things I dont want in Grand Theft Auto V, but thats where Ill stop. Though I think Rockstar is an exceptional developer, it does not mean theyre exempt in making mistakes. Now that Ive gotten that out of the way, I want to know what features or elements you dont want to see in GTA V. Surely there must be some characteristic you think does not fit the games universe. Feel free to say it in the comments. But what if the studio decides to ignore us and put it all in the final product? As frustrating as it is to say, I'm sure that fact will matter little and we'll buy the game anyway.

In what I'm sure was a calculated effort, Runic Games played things very safe in making this game. Torchlight 2 is likely the least innovative sequel I've ever played. There is nothing really new, but everything that was in the original is back in spades. For people who can't get enough loot and level, there will be plenty to enjoy. For people who have not historically enjoyed the Torchlight or Diablo, there really isn't any effort to draw you in.

For me, I have enjoyed the game so far. The near constant leveling and loot collecting are fun. I find the game to be very easy on the normal mode, being able to just hold right mouse on many bosses to defeat them. However, trying the harder difficulties, I found the game to be annoying as enemies health get bigger and they take longer to kill, but they do not require any additional strategy (i.e. I used the same attacks to kill them). If I am mentally fatigued from a stressful day, the simplicity of advancing in Torchlight 2 can be cathartic. In my mind, the game fails to be anything more though. All the thinking is in which loot to wear and skills to use, but once you're set up, the actual gameplay is stupidly simple and the story is a throw-away.

In summary, Torchlight 2 is a known quantity. Since there is nothing really new or drastically different, it is near impossible that Runic will offend any of the series fans. On the other hand, it also is impossible that this game will impress anyone who cared less for Torchlight/Diablo/etc. Torchlight 2 is not ambitious, innovative, or inspiring. It is however, consistent, reliable, and safe. It it not the type of game for a hot fling, but one many people could happily be married to for quite a long time. Your enjoyment will vary based on which type of game you're looking for.

Link for Rating.

I picked up a copy of Guild Wars and the Factions expansion back in 2008 and didn't get very far.The game was unique but it failed to pull me into theexperienceand hold my attention like it did for so many other people. There was certainly nothing wrong with it and I thought the whole setup of the pesdo-MMO was pretty neat, but in the end we parted ways after only a couple dozen of hours (at the most) That said, after a few hours with Guild Wars 2 I see the potential for a long lasting and very rewarding relationship.

Upon creating my Human warrior who was born into nobility and has a dead sister which apparently angers him, I was thrust into the mini-tutorial where me and all the up-and-coming heroes of Tyria must defend thevillageof Shaemoor from the hordes of Centaurs. Already I noticed the biggest area where Guild Wars 2 tries todifferentiateitself from other MMOs, the focus on teamwork. Instead of being told to go kill X amount of enemies by myself and complete a small handful of quests before finishing off some boss and entering the actual game world, I was told to defend a location. Any player in thevicinitycould join me and all of us worked seamlessly on the same task without having to add each other to a party. As the number of players grew so did the amount of enemy attacking. The tutorial ended with the newly collected horde of heroes rushing towards a final boss, which seemed to scaleappropriatelygiven the amount of players, and bashing on it until it exploded knocking everybodyunconsciousthus teleporting us to the game world.

Like always, read the rest here at my blog.

It's been a year and a half - a year and a half since I last stepped foot into my GameSpot profile. Sure, I posted on the forums now and then to fight off withdrawal, but now I feel like I'm stepping into a home that I abandoned. I don't know how many of you are still around, but it would make me happy to know that some of you are alive and well.

My life's been all over the place, but in a good way. First of all, I'm a student at the University of British Columbia, where I'm half-assedly getting my Bachelors in Political Sciences. Why a half-assed degree I probably won't ever put into practical use? Because I'm going to be a cop, which pretty much means that any degree will put me up for hire. I'm already joining the Canadian Forces as a member of the Army Reserves to get my foot in the door of law enforcement. Why these changes? It's a mix of becoming a bit jaded, and wanting to become Batman. I also drink now... sometimes.

Gaming-wise, I've slowed down tremendously when it comes to variety. I finally got around to playing Persona 4 last year, which was an amazing experience. BlazBlue is stealing an unfair amount of time from my other games, as usual. And finally, I've recently become addicted to League of Legends, which continues to sap hours of my life, daily.

With the change to a more military-driven life, I've picked up Longboarding as a new sport of mine. You get hurt a lot doing it, but the fun outweighs the pain. Nothing like going 60 on a hill, only to drift through a corner with your buddies next to you.

And my girlfriend? Still with her, and going strong.

So there you have it. I don't think this means that I'll be coming back to GameSpot, but a good friend of mine recently reminded me of this home I used to have, so I just wanted to blog it out for the first time in a while. Hopefully, I'll be back someday.

Mon, 30 Jan 2012 12:30:40 -0800 Myviewing writes: Cramming http://www.gamespot.com/users/Myviewing/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25970966 What is up guys I have finally gotten another fit of stuff to write about. January has been a thankfully lazy month for me and I wasn't really keeping track of a whole lot of stuff that's been going on so I'm not sure if I can say a whole lot. I did get the first First Viewing up for this year though, a cover on Ramayana: The Epic.

If you want to see what I have to think about the movie, here is my series of reactions: http://www.viddler.com/v/706ef1b6

And if you want to just see the movie for yourself: http://www.hulu.com/watch/311372/ramayana-the-epic

So for a series of random stuff, I remember hearing that Microsoft doesn't really care about exclusives. It stinks to hear that they actually feel this way, but at the same time I could kind of feel it coming. Back when the Xbox 360 was getting a ton of exclusive content it kind of left some people like me thinking that it would continue to be this way throughout the entire gen. We thought Mass Effect wouldn't go to the Playstation 3 and it did. We also thought Rare would be encouraged to make a series of sequels to games like Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie or even make a franchise out of Kameo if anybody remembers that game, but instead it's just Kinect Sport for them from now on. I know most people thought Blue Dragon would get more sequels instead of getting spin-offs on the DS, I was way more hopeful for a Lost Odyssey sequel though and Mistwalker obviously isn't dedicated to doing anything on the HD twins it would seem. And as it shows, none of that has come to pass even though Microsoft does have a few franchises going like Gears, Fable, Halo, and Forza.

I don't know if it exactly helps anybody to know that now they're also apparently fully focused on working for Kinect and I don't know if they have anything else planned outside of just that. So I'm not sure if this means that they are going to try and go the whole Wii route with the next system or if they're going to go so focused on the casual gaming market that it might irritate its previous owners. I'm pretty sure Halo, Gears and Forza will be continued at this point though I have a feeling that Fable might be discontinued for some reason. Well I guess now I'll have to wait until next gen to see if I'm still willing to support Microsoft's console endeavors or if I can just get the same games elsewhere.

On the gaming front, not much has gone up since like in the typical January not much usually gets released with the exception of maybe one or two somewhat big names. I did play my first game for this year though, AMY. Yeah every year I end up looking at a game and end up thinking, "Wow this game got such bad reviews I have got to see how bad it is for myself." I played the demo and it didn't seem bad so I got the full game. I mean I've played Escape from Bug Island and I think it got the same ratings as this and I actually liked the game along with Alone in the Dark and Cursed Mountain so I thought why not take the dive? I have been playing it on hard and I actually was enjoying this game up until Chapter 4. It's at this point where the game starts to get rather impossible and tedious to accomplish. I'm probably still going to try and beat it though. In general this is probably only worth it if you're a dedicated diehard survival horror fan who plays everything in the genre. Otherwise if you just want a good game, just pick up SIREN: Bloodcurse instead on PSN.

Time to cram in a few more things I'm a bit lazy to elaborate on:
That actually reminds me of this much, I have gotten a PSN account working and if anyone wants to add me, feel free to look up the username Myviewing. I want it to be tomorrow already, I want to get Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Soulcalibur V already. Red Tails is a pretty cool movie. I'm really bored and don't know how to continue going on. Writing is fun and tedious at the same time. There you go.

That's the news from Myviewing as of January 30, 2012.
