Official_cover_art_for_Bioshock_Infinite

The most recent of all my top 10 games, Bioshock Infinite was something that truly surprised me. Of course it was going to be a good game, but from the moment I layed eyes on Columbia I knew I was in for something special. From the vigors and skylines, Infinite feels like a breath of fresh air in terms of shooter gameplay, but the game is so much more than the gameplay. The story and the characters feel fully fleshed out and the ending is one of the best I've seen in video games.

#3. The Elder Scrolls Skyrim

The_Elder_Scrolls_V_Skyrim_cover.png

This was actually my first Elder Scrolls game, and I feel ashamed that I missed out on the other Elder Scrolls games. The world is massive with tons of sidequests to discover, the main story was entertaining, and there was a seemingly endless amount of content in the game. Some people complain about the combat for being boring but i found it quite enjoyable, especially the archery and spell casting. Overall I can't wait to see what Bethesda does for the next Elder Scrolls.

Maybe not like the one in '84 but seeing a number of studios closing, and the AAA games being bigger and more bloated and not making back their production costs (see the Tomb Raider reboot), and the industry's greed getting worse and worse. It's not unrealistic to think the PS4 could be a $700 system with $70 games. The average Joe doesn't have tons of money to put into high end systems and games and has cheaper alternatives in the form of tablet games. Meanwhile the hardcore gamers and the studios seem to be blind to this more interested in fancy graphics and "emotional polygons" and honestly I'm tired of it all. I like games but I'm tired of the industry greed, developer's egos and fanboys..oh the fanboys but instead of writing a big long editorial discussing about this possible crash I saw The 25th Hour and I heard Edward Norton's famous monologue about NY and I started think of a verion I had for my thoughts on all this. Of course I had to censor it because GS doesn't like naughty language so either you are all going to love this or hate this.

F*** you? F*** me.

F*** this whole gamer culture and everyone in it.

F*** the Xbox Live brats, screaming their racist, homophobic slurs into headsets. Stupid spoiled brats.

F*** EA, money grubbing corporate pigs, self styled masters of the universe with their DRM and on disc DLC figuring out new ways to rob gamers blind. You think we don't know about this. Give us a break. Activison, Microsoft, Sega Nintendo. All of you.

F**** the stuck up elistist PC gamers and they're $1000 gaming rigs. Not all of us are made of money you know.

F**** the "fake geek girls" with their anorexic bodies and fake boobs making it hard for us legitmate girl gamers to be taken seriously. You're not foolin' anyone honey!

F*** David Cage and his "emotional polygons."

F*** the hypocritical parents who condemn games for making their kids violent then throw an Ipad in the little snot's faces because it's a cheap baby sittier.

F*** the NRA using games as a scapegoat. Yeah let's destroy the 1st Amendment to protect the 2nd amendment. That makes a lot of sense.

F*** the mobile game makers, making half assed things, calling them games then shoving as many microtransactions into them as possible.

F**** Gamestop and their crummy trade in value and their overpriced used games. You force your employees to shove preorders and magazine subscriptions down our throats and can't even pay them decent wages.

F*** the fanboys and their whiny malcontent.

F*** this industry and everyone in it. From Japan to Europe. From the studios in California to the lofts in New York. Let an earthquake crumble it. Let the fires rage. Let it burn to f***** ash then let the waters rise and submerge this whole, rat-infested industry.

No. F**** you kbaily. You're getting too old for this.

Back in 2006 I was in my last year of uni and I joined Gamespot while I was doing my final exams as an outlet for all my stress. I met loads of people here and since I didn't have a job I spent a lot... and I mean a lot, of time on this site. Forums, blogging, unions etc, I did everything and was very much a part of the community. The same year I eventually got a job and tada... found a guy who was head over heals in love with me. I have to say 2006 was a very good year.

Many things have happened to me in those seven years I've been here. I've graduate from university, became an aunt two more times, got a nice boyfriend who I love and who also is my best friend, got a stable job which I've been in for 5 1/2 years, moved out from my Mom's house, got a house of my own and oh I got engaged to said boyfriend.

In ten months time I'll be a married woman, and more than likely I'll still be here talking to you all.

My activity may not be the same, but there is something about gamespot that just keeps making me want to come back.

Well, actually, let me rephrase that.  I know what it was about, so I don't need plot explanations, however... WHAT WAS IT ALL ABOUT?

This movie annoyed me, not least because of the pedigree of talent involved in it.  Premiere Sci Fi Director?  Check.  Enormoulsy talented cast? Check.  Big budget special effects?  Check? Cleverly written script? Che...no wait.

The first third (maybe) was pretty good, Fassbender alone on the ship captured the isolation of space perfectly, but it all seemed to go to shiiiii when the crew woke up.  MY GOD THE CREW!  I cannot entertain such a crushingly STUPID bunch of people and they are supposed to be scientists.  The brightest of the bright.

I am pretty sure all of this has been said ad infinitum by others more adept at critiquing movies, however I would like to point out some exasperating plot holes:  (SPOILERS AHEAD)

1:  The map guy.  The guy with the little drones that go off and map an area, also equipped with high tech GPS, gets lost!  Really?

2:  The biologist guy, brought along on the journey to help with the discovery of our supposed progenitors is scared of a 2000 year old corpse, and yet is happy to entertain, and get stupidly close to a sentient worm thing THAT HAS ACID FOR BLOOD!

3:  The ridiculous connection between Wayland and Charlize's character that just wasn't explored.

4:  Why, oh WHY, if the moon our hapless crew landed on was a site for WMD did our supposed progenitors provide various maps to the location?  I mean, seriously, the whole premise about the Engineers wanting to wipe humanity out after creating it is around the idea that each progeny secretly wants to kill their father.  The Engineers it seems, were trying to do that before we could get around to it, so WHY LEAVE A MAP TO EXPOSE THE PLAN?

5:  Don't even get me started on the running vertically from a falling ship when running horizontally would have been signigicantly more effective.

6:  Alien pregnancy?  Really?  That is just f**king lazy.

7:  Noomi Rapace perfectly able to rappel from and climb in to a beleagured escape pod with very recent lower abdominal surgery, but struggles to run and perform otherwise fairly straight-forward activities.  I have had a c-section, and I can assure you even sitting up is excrutiatingly painful, let alone hulking the inanimate Fassbender down a 10ft drop.

8:  What were the Engineer crew running from in the holographic impression that Fassbender manages to uncover? It just wasn't explained.

I find the whole thing just inexplicable.  Alien is an incredible movie, in my opinion.  Perfect blend of science fiction, horror and drama, Prometheus is just crap.  What happened?

Has anyone seen an extended Director's cut?  I ask because some of the narrative leaps suggest to me that there was an awful lot of editing, so many scenes didn't make sense.

Anyone have it yet?  And if so, which system?

Sun, 17 Mar 2013 11:12:40 -0700 Link9n17 writes: Bidding Farewell to a Bloodstained Past http://www.gamespot.com/users/Link9n17/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-26017465             Ive betrayed no one, Ive simply come to my senses, Kain Highwind mutters as he turns on his so-called ally and rejoins the protagonists, stabbing their opponent in the back. This shocking moment, among the many plot twists in the middle of Final Fantasy IVs story, is conveyed through only dialog. Although released in 1991, Final Fantasy IV still captivates players through its storytelling which has redefined adventures through the medium of video games. Final Fantasy IVs story elegantly combines both traditional and revolutionary elements. Because Final Fantasy IVs story is replete with well-developed characters, revolutionary presentation methods, and memorable moments, it should be compared to the quality of novels and well thought out screenplays.

Final Fantasy IVs story includes well-developed characters. Cecil Harvey, the storys main protagonist, starts the game as the eminent, feared and respected Dark Knight, the commander of the Red Wings of Baron. After a mission to the city of Myssidia to recover (or steal) the water crystal, Cecil doesnt come home to cheers and praise, but rather to the stripping of his position as the commander of the Red Wings by the king of Baron. The king tells Cecil he will consider giving back Cecils position if Cecil goes on a certain mission to simply bring a ring to a village. Unbeknownst to Cecil, upon the rings delivery the ring causes genocide of all of the people in the village, save one. Struck with anguish, he leaves Baron and journeys with the sole survivor of the village. Later on in the story, he decides he must ascend Mt. Ordeals to better protect his friends. When he reaches the peak, a mysterious voice comes out of nowhere telling him firmly, Bid farewell to your bloodstained past. Cecil then drops the title of Dark Knight and becomes a Paladin, which changes his armor from bulky and black to graceful and white, which alters him forever. Another well developed character is Cecils best friend, Kain, the games Shadow, a traditional archetype in storytelling. He starts out the game as the unwavering leader of the Dragoons of Baron. After Cecil leaves on his journey, the antagonist, Golbez, controls Kains mind and commands him to go after Cecil and his friends, who interfere with Golbezs agenda. Throughout the course of the game, none of the characters have any idea where his loyalty stands. The player doesnt even know. The characters and the player also dont know if Golbez is using Kain or if Kain is using the pretext Golbez is manipulating him. Final Fantasy IVs characters are among the first ever in a video game to be this developed, thus revolutionizing games characters for the next twenty years.

Final Fantasy IVs presentation follows suit to its characters; it possesses a variety of attributes, which set the standard for games to come. The storys perspective has completely unique attributes to it. No avid reader that has read a book has read a story in the perspective Final Fantasy IV gives its readers or in this case, its players. The story's perspective has uniqueness to it. Instead of they as in only the characters in the game, the story's perspective includes the player. This would make the games perspective we. The player has an investment in the story and the characters well-being more so then any reader enjoying a book would be invested. The players care more because of the fact they control the characters as they travel on their quest. Along with perspective, Final Fantasy IVs story also does an amazing job at keeping the story focused. With the grandness of the game (a thirty hour story), it would be easy for the story's path to go astray. It keeps the main story consistently going, along with some subplots at the same time. A great example would be with the character Edge. Edge, the prince of Eblan, wants to avenge his mother and father and the main characters agree to aid him with his vengeance. Rather than dropping the story to pursue Edges vengeance, the characters have dialogue for the subplot as well as for the main story. The subplot may even give hints as to the explanation of certain critical events in the main story. These revolutionary techniques helped set the standard for stories through the new medium of video games as color influenced modern-day film.

Final Fantasy IV definitely wasnt the first video game; however, neither was The Wizard of Oz the first film, but like The Wizard of Oz, Final Fantasy IVs story possesses a plethora of moments which have worked their way into the memories of many. The archetype jester has representation in the game as two characters, a brother and sister named Palom and Porom. The novice ten-year-old learners study black magic and white magic respectively. After walking into a trap, the walls in a lengthy hallway start closing in on all of the heroes. When the situation seems hopeless, they say their goodbyes, and they turn themselves to stone, stopping the walls and saving the rest of the heroes lives. The drama of Palom and Poroms sacrifice doesnt compare to the games most surprising and climactic moment. The stage has been set. Cecils destined fight against the antagonist Golbez arrives. After the dreadful and spectacular fight comes to a close, the story should be over or so the player thinks. The characters travel to the moon, and they meet the Lunarian, Fusoya, who reveals everything. He tells them the Lunarians, an advanced species (who look exactly like humans), have been vigilantly waiting for the human race to become less war-like. They agreed to put themselves to sleep on an artificial moon until the one day humans and Lunarians could live together in harmony. He informs them that Golbez was being controlled by the evil Lunarian, Zemus, who wants to kill all of the humans. Golbez and Kain had been previously manipulated because both of them felt unending rage deep within their hearts. The characters confront Zemus, only for him to be resurrected. A vision hits Cecil revealing that not only does he have half Lunarian blood, but Golbez does as well. In fact, a revelation also comes with the vision which tells Cecil that he and Golbez share the same parents. Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back contains a similar situation; the antagonist, Darth Vader, reveals himself to be the protagonists father. These moments have impacted players to the same degree as iconic movies and books have with their audiences.

Final Fantasy IVs story compares to first-rate tales with its character, presentation, and unforgettable moments. Final Fantasy IVs story influenced emphasis on strong characters, as the story was the among the first video games to add such depth. Another distinctive attribute of the game is the innovative presentation. The story, made up of several heart-felt moments, focuses on the value of hope in times of darkness. Gamespot.com game reviewer, Greg Kasavin, distinguished Final Fantasy IVs story as the game which pioneered the whole concept of dramatic storytelling in an RPG.

---------

(I wrote this for my composition class last year. Even one year later, I think it's a pretty good paper -- I got an A on it, of course. I wish I would've written something about how it's unfortunate how after FFIV, deep storytelling in videogames has seemingly been confined to RPGs. After Telltale's The Walking Dead, it would seem that deep storytelling outside of RPGs has had a rebirth. I hope this is the case, because I believe that the true potential of gaming as a medium for deep storytelling has yet to be fully realized. The potential is limitless.)

Yes, for the past couple of weeks or month I should say. Yes, I own a little close to 100 PS3 games between disc and download, my Wii has been getting a chunk of the gametime. Why you ask? I'm not sure why, I just feel like there has been games that I have been needing to finish. The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, Sin & Punishment Star Successor, and MadWorld to name a few. Notice how I named games you may or may not heard before. Two highly acclaimed Japaense Role Playing games. A very fun action beat em' up brawler and probably one of the hardest rail shooters I've ever played. I own twenty two Wii titles that serve enough to me play. Again, I haven't played my PS3 in a month. Last time I played it was when the Sir Hammerlock DLC came out for Borderlands 2. Yea, that long and I haven't even finished it let alone really ripped into it. That is fine to me, when the time comes you will see me on PSN and XboxLive. As far as my Xbox is concerned, I play my Xbox to play exclusives. I.E. Halo and Gears. When you see me on there, I'm just on YouTube app or my Xfinity app to watch videos, TV Shows and Movies. Now where is this so called part where you think I have more fun playing my Wii instead of PS3 & Xbox360. Well, I'll tell you my friends. Reason why is because I realized that I have tons of game that are very fun to play. For example, Animal Crossing. I have been a fan of the series since the beginning with GameCube. One of my personal favorite Sim games next to The Sims. Not only just Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong Country Returns, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario 25th Anniversary brings me to my casual gaming sense. Those games I love them because they are fun in yet can be challegning at the sametime. Now when I want something on the line of teen rating and higher. The games that hardcore to my personal opinion which are The Last Story and Xenoblade to go back from the start. But, I also have of course Metroid Prime trilogy, MadWorld, Sin & Punishment, Resident Evil 4 (best one of the series just saying). And of course Super Smash Bros. Brawl arguebly on of the best fighting games of this day and age of gaming. Now look truly to me it is OK to have and own a Wii. I'am big Nintendo fan, I love the Wii always have since I first got in 07. Starting with Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess. There is nothing wrong in owning a Wii. I believe that, if you know what games are you into, you will find the game that is perfect for you for the Wii. You like shooters, Metroid Prime and Goldeneye (the remake for the Wii) those are perfect for you. JRPG's look for Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story and soon to be released in North America Pandora's Tower excellent JRPG's. Causal and Party of course Mario, Donkey Kong, and Mario Party. So what I am trying to say since playing my Wii for about almost a month, I have been a blast playing it. Makes me love it more and remind me its still hella fun to play. When will I play my PS3 and Xbox again, I'm not sure. But, I'm in no rush to play it. I have games I have never finished yet on Wii so the hours I am putting into the Wii. I am truly enjoying and I couldn't ask for the best twenty two games that I am playing over and over again. Thanks for reading and I hope you can see what I am trying to say. Message me for questions and or suggestions for the Wii or Wii U. And always leave your postive or negative comment below and I'll see you guys next time.

I received a PS3 as a gift for Christmas with Metal Gear Solid 4 (this game just blew my mind on how good the gameplay and the cinematic scenes were) and a Ultimate Portable Sega Genesis (I might do a review for this in a future blog if anyone is interested in it)

My PS3 name is SuperStarr501 if anyone wants to add me.

By the way...

Super late Happy Holidays and New years!!!

Just needed to get that out of the way haha. I have bought a few more games on the PS3 like persona 3, which I have yet to play, Just cause 2, and Blazblue Continuum Shift. I have the first Blazblue on 360 and was very impressed on the artwork. The anime style of the game hooked me on to this game, big time.

But let's cut to the chase. I haven't visited GS in a looooong time. At least, that's how it feels to me. I look back on these past few months and think it has been a long time, when in reality, a few months isn't a long length of time at all.

I've finally graduated High School, have been accepted college, I've got a job for the summer, and I'm ready to go to school in the fall. I'm really, really looking forward to it.

For the past year or so, I have been looking forward to this moment with such anticipation, and it's almost here. However, one thing that I didn't expect to happen, did in fact, happen. Soon after graduation, I realized how much I'm going to miss the people in my life. Family, friends, acquaintances, my pets.. I will not see any of them, for a time. My school is by no means far away from home, but even still.. Any distance away from home can still feel far.

I guess it was a sort-of revelation to me. I wasn't expecting the idea of leaving home to hit me hard, but it did. Only time will tell how I deal with the situation come late August, when I leave. One thing is for sure, though.. I need to stay away from Toy Story 3. It's so sad but an amazing movie.

There's so much I could write here, but compiling all of my thoughts into words has never been a specialty of mine, and I feel like I've said too much already. I hope you all are well. To be honest, I doubt I'll be visiting here much at all after this. I'd like to thank everyone here who has been here to talk to me, ask how I'm feeling, and just simply be there for me to vent to. Having a blog to let your thoughts and feelings flow is a great thing, but for now I just don't have the encouragement to keep writing.

I'll check up on you guys now and then, but like I said, it won't be nearly as often. I wish you all the best and thank you, again. It means a whole lot to me that you guys have been there for me these past four years.

I still go on Facebook now and then, so if you'd like to add me online there, I'd happily accept the request. Just PM me and I'll send a link to my profile your way. I'll be checking on here for a few days to see what you guys have to say, and then I'll be on my way.

Thanks again everyone, I'm really fortunate to have met all of you fine Gamespotters.

- Matt
