He is the son of Zeus and a mortal woman. Kratos was a Spartan general and servant of Ares, and Kratos later rebelled against his master and destroyed him using Pandora's Box. Upon defeating Ares, he became the new God of War.

Kratos is a very destructive, amoral, self-centered and brutal character. He is driven constantly by his rage and pride. In God of War, he blames the original God of War, Ares, for tricking him into killing his beloved wife and child. Kratos was also ensnared by a blind fury to kill. Likewise, in God of War II, he swears revenge on Zeus for deceiving, betraying, and killing him.

Kratos occasionally does display feelings of guilt or sorrow, mostly for his family. However, these emotions are often converted to extreme rage. An example is when Kratos fatally stabbed Athena to death. He is surprised when Athena tells Kratos that he is the son of Zeus. In denial, he replies that he has no father. He does not truly accept this fact until the siege of Mount Olympus. Kratos told Zeus that his son brought the destruction of Olympus.

Throughout most of the series Kratos' skin is seen completely lacking pigmentation, only showing his original skin color in flashbacks. Kratos does not use a significant amount of clothes, usually seen only wearing a loincloth, sandals and gauntlets. Some exceptions include the early stages of God of War II where he is seen wearing armor reminiscent to the one used by Ares in the first game and cutscenes detailing his past, where he wears a different set of armor. He has a very large, red tattoo that begins below his left eye and spirals over the top of his head, down his neck and back, up his torso, and ending on his left shoulder. His weapon of choice are chain blades, which are attached to his wrists in all of the series' installments.

The game isn't game of the year material, but it's a good start. It's pretty much a GTA clone with elements from Assassin's Creed. The rate I've been playing the game, I thought I would have finished it in a few days, but I'm sure I'm nowhere near the end of the game.

I've also been playing Hasbro Family Game Night. The games bring back memories from childhood when I would actually play the board versions of the games. Whenever I'm in a casual mood I play it, however I'm reserving it only in the night. The reason is because the game cannot install on my HDD because I have the disc version, therefore it must run directly off the disc. The daytime here is extremely hot here and everytime I switch on my system, I'm in fear of the RRoD because my first system lasted less than a year and my current one is slightly over a year.

I also downloaded and played the Bayonetta demo, and I have to say, I was both impressed and disappointed by it. Too many things are happening on screen during combat and it was very hard to keep track with all the button mashing. Camera angles were a bit of an issue. Visuals were okay. The game itself looks like it would be very challenging. It might give God of War 3 a run for it's money. This might be the very first game I would purchase for 2010

That kinda sucks...

[-Edit-] Whoops... seems that GS was messing with me again... everything is still intact...

Oh well, the world keeps on turning and everyone continues to game. I might not have online, but some how that didn't stop me from picking up a copy of Modern Warfare 2. Extremely silly of me no doubt, but since my Black Friday mission to pick up a dirt cheap flat-screen TV was unsuccessful, I grabbed the game for 30 bucks instead.
Besides being the same thing I remember MW being amazing at (online that is) the game is pretty fun even through the campaign. Most people play shooters for one portion of the game, I on the other hand adore all the efforts that gone into MW2... its like the perfect Tom Clancy story with tons of toys!

Sitting here at the library with nothing to look forward to this evening kind of deters me from really leaning into this current rant, so I'll keep it brief for anyone crazy enough to keep reading whatever I end up whapping on this germ-infested keyboard. Dragons Age is awesome. The Vikings are still a strong football team. Snow is really not all that bad. Working on your birthday is common, but it still sucks. And last but not least... women... the best way to describe them is like fire. They keep you warm, but they can also burn ya

Best wishes to all my fellow gamers as we trudge our way into 2010. I sure miss bs'ing with yaw online.

Sun, 06 Dec 2009 16:34:12 -0800 KingOfOldSkool writes: Apparently the folks at Microsoft enjoy spending their holidays in court http://www.gamespot.com/users/KingOfOldSkool/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25766394 Thanks to it's large size and apparently even larger appetite for monopolistic tendencies.. the courtroom is a familiar place to Microsoft. It's pretty much commonplace to hear of MS's most recent shenanigans landing them in court every so often.. so I suppose it shouldn't be too surprising to see the company's XBOX division keeping inline with the rest of it's bretheren, but even by Microsoft standards the end of 2009 has been a rather litigious time period for the company thanks to many controversial tactics they have been using in regards to their gaming division.

I'm pretty sure that most gamers are already aware of the XBOX 360 being the most unreliable gaming console in history(and the multitude of cl*ss action lawsuits that followed), but I imagine there may be some that may not realize the full extent of the potential court related headaches Microsoft will be enduring thanks to their XBOX360. Most of which seems to have brought about by Microsoft's apparent desire to enforce some of their policies in time for the recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (some industry analysts say MS had Activision buzzing in its ear to take action swiftly).

In the time leading up to MW2's massive release they wielded their ban hammer harsher than ever before.. banning over a million XBL accounts (as well as crippling certain system features such as online connectivity being permanantly disabled, corrupted saves, no HDD installation etc.) over supposed anti-mod policy violations. Soon after that little purge they then proceeded to lock out third-party storage for the XBOX360 to the dismay of many gamers and companies(such as Datel)developing those third-party solutions, using varying excuses that usually revolved around them trying to "stop cheaters" as well as system modders.

If all that wasn't enough.. Microsoft started wielding the ban hammer yet AGAIN recently. In the weeks after the MW 2 launch Microsoft has been banning XBL players to varying degrees for using the javelin glitch in online play. And by ban.. I mean a complete ban.. not just from that specific game but altogether. Basically, if you get caught using it.. unknowingly or on purpose.. you could potentially have that money spent on XBL Gold membership go right down the crapper. Sounds like a festive holiday this year for them and their customers doesn't it?

I could go on and on about the multitude of problems I have with Microsoft's varying tendencies with these matters, but I do realize that there are EULAs that people agree to when using MS services such as XBL.. so sadly some of their crap regardless of how f*cked up it may be is within their rights(for the moment.. not all aspects of a EULA hold up in court at times). BUT.. what is not(and I'm sure the courts will agree) is the damaging of gamer's consoles. Banning a player from an online service is one thing(even under suspect circumstances), but making their $300-$400 investment a fraction of what it was before is not.. permanently crippling certain hardware features on a system was overkill.

Microsoft needs to lay off their powertrip long enough to realize that once a person buys one of their products it is perfectly within their rights to modify their systems REGARDLESS of the intended purposes. Basically.. pirating a disc is illegal, custom hardware and even modding a system to be able to play a modded disc is not. Yes.. game piracy is an ongoing problem, but some of these instances invloving crippled systems do involve mods that had nothing to do with piracy. Examples.. some gamers got pegged as "pirates" for simply trying to use different HDD alternatives or using different firmware that allowed more customization and freedom(outside of just pirating games and cheating).

Microsoft's aggressive policies regarding mass account banning, system modifications and their very blatant Apple-like quest to have absolute control of their platform through very monopolistic agendas such as the banning of 3rd party memory will probably indeed land them in quite a bit of hot water. I'm not saying that some of their decisions will still not stick, but I can't imagine any of this looking good to a judge(especially with the faulty hardware issues already on the table).. someone is really going to nail MS pretty good, because right now they are seemingly fighting a battle on all fronts.

Sat, 05 Dec 2009 21:21:08 -0800 KnightsofRound writes: Chainsaws are awesome. http://www.gamespot.com/users/KnightsofRound/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25766128 Sony once claimed that the next generation wouldn't begin until they said so; they couldn't have been more wrong. Released shortly before the PlayStation 3 and Wii, Gears of War took the gaming industry by storm and anyone with an Xbox 360 knew that there was no other place to be at the time. Gears of War was the first game that truly let everyone know that the next generation was here, and it was here to stay.

Gears of War is a third-person over the shoulder shooter, that follows four absolutely hulking badass dudes through a completely destroyed world as they fight off the Locust Horde. The Locust are an alien race that has managed to take over nearly the entire world after their appearance on Emergence Day - the day in which the Locust had risen from the ground to inflict a mass-scale war on the entirety of humanity. While Gears of War's story remains relatively simple and low-key for most of the game, it's designed well enough to give you enough of a reason to fight wave after wave of the Locust menace.

Taking design cues from highly successful games from the last generation, Gears of War implements an over the shoulder camera angle as well as a highly intuitive cover system. While most of the core game mechanics featured in Gears of War are nothing new, they have never before been executed to this level of perfection. The cover system in Gears of War is highly essential to your survival, and If you don't have something like a slab of concrete slapped between you and the enemy, then you're doing something wrong. Fortunately the cover system in Gears of War is deceptively simple, but at the same time has quite a few different options available. You simply press the A button when you're near cover and your character will automatically attach himself to it. You can then use the left analog stick to move left and right so long as the cover permits. While under the protection of cover you can do several things, you can pop out to take some shots; you can blind fire around a corner; and you can even do an evasive maneuver to shift to another nearby slab of cover. It strikes a nice balance between ease of use and providing you with enough options to get the job done while staying alive.

The cover system in Gears of War is absolutely essential due to the little amount of damage that you can take. Gears of War includes the now industry standard regenerating health system, but you actually don't even have a health bar that is actually visible. The more damage you take, the more visible a red omen sign will appear in the center of your screen. The fuller it gets, the closer you are to death, so putting your head down and hiding back behind cover after taking a few shots is essential to let your health recharge if you've taken damage. There are a few options available to you outside of cover, you can fire your weapons without aiming properly but they are highly inaccurate, and there is no aiming reticle whatsoever. You can also do an evasive roll as well as the "roadie run" which uses spectacular camera work as well as a slight speed increase to instill a feeling of intensity. The roadie run is useful because you are less susceptible to fire, but it is also impossible to fire your weapons while doing it.

You'll spend the majority of Gears of War in a group with three other soldiers, and occasionally you'll split up into groups of two. No matter how many members you have with you, these guys will provide back up and support throughout the entire campaign. Unfortunately they are not always entirely reliable and can occasionally lead to some frustrating elements due to stupid AI behaviour. They are usually competent, but you will occasionally have to babysit them during certain sections which can be frustrating. Thankfully when someone is shot down they are not actually dead and can be revived, so if you run up to a teammate and press the X button you can bring him back into the fight. Unfortunately this only works for human players in co-op mode, so if you're flying solo when you get shot down, you're dead. Your AI comrades also cannot revive one another which is frustrating, to say the least, especially when you're pinned down and one of your teammates is standing right beside another who has been shot down. While the AI will fight alongside you and will help you take out enemies every now and then, they do a much better job of simply distracting the enemy soldiers, rather than actually killing them. You have access to a very rudimentary command system where you can give them orders to either attack, cease fire, or regroup, but it seems that in almost every case where using these commands were actually desirable they would simply respond with "negative" which rendered them all but useless. Thankfully for the majority of the game your AI partners are competent enough that any complaints against their behaviour are mostly minor annoyances rather than significant gameplay issues.

Due to the way in which Gears of War was designed however, it leads the game to being one of the absolute greatest (if not the best) co-op gameplay experiences around. The entirety of Gears of War is designed with co-op in mind, which makes it an absolute blast to play through with a friend, and while the entire game can be played through by yourself, it's almost essential to have a human partner on the highest difficulty setting. Not only can you revive one another if you go down, but you can also coordinate attack strategies and plans which are simply not possible to execute with the AI controlled characters, since they tend to do their own thing most of the time. Needless to say, you are not missing any content from the campaign by playing co-op (nothing is cut out of co-op) so if you have the option then take it, because Gears of War is a rare case where the core game is actually made even better by playing it with another person. The co-op system is also incredibly well designed because you can have another human player join you no matter how far you've made it through the game, and you can even continue to play the same campaign by yourself at a later time.

Unfortunately one of the biggest issues that can be had with Gears of War is that it seems like the difficulty is not balanced very well. On casual it's simply just too easy, and on hardcore it can get insanely difficulty at times, especially by yourself. Most of these nuances with the difficulty are alleviated by playing co-op, but it seems like the game could have probably benefited from having another difficulty setting between casual and hardcore. Most anyone who has ever played a shooter will be able to get through hardcore, but expect there to be some really tough spots if you're going it alone.

The weaponry in Gears of War is absolutely fantastic, and the loadout design of the game is probably my favourite balance between realism and usability. Many people complain that games that let you carry as many weapons as you want are unrealistic, but at the same time others have also complained that games that limit your weapon selection are annoying and frustrating. Gears of War strikes an exceptionally well designed balance between these two options, allowing you to carry two main weapons at all times, one sidearm, and up to four grenades. All of these weapons are accessed via the d-pad which is a great system to use on the fly, as you will never find yourself fiddling around trying to get the right weapon out. It's such a great system though because if you want to use a sniper rifle without being gimped in close range combat you can, therefore there are quite a few options as to what kind of weapon loadout you can have. A lot of the weapons in Gears of War are just absolutely cool too, such as the Hammer of Dawn, which can only be used during specific outdoor areas, will paint a target who will then be blasted to oblivion by a huge satellite beam from the sky. Needless to say, the chainsaw bayonet has spawned into an obvious fan favourite, and the rifle it's attached to - the Lancer - will most likely end up being your go-to weapon for the vast majority of the campaign. Though I personally found that in many instances the Gnasher shotgun was my best friend in Gears of War.

Gears of War is an astounding technical achievement from a console standpoint. Sure games such as Half-Life 2 had already set the bar for what graphics are capable of a few years prior, but Gears of War is the first game that truly brought an absolutely mind-blowing graphical achievement to the Xbox 360. Gears of War looks phenomenal and is an absolute blast to play in high-definition and anyone who does so will have an incredibly visceral experience - Gears of War is an absolutely brutal game, and with the right set up it can be experienced in all its beautifully destroyed, and disgustingly gory glory. Character models are especially well rendered, Marcus Fenix and crew are just a bunch of huge, tough looking dudes, and the Locust designs are as equally large and even more terrifying. The environments while completely over-saturated in dull colours, consist of some incredible looking areas - especially the ones that take place underground. Unfortunately the frame rate takes a nosedive during some of the cutscenes but it's never anything too severe, but it's definitely noticeable. Thankfully the frame rate is consistently solid during the actual gameplay, so it amounts to nothing more than a minor complaint in what is an otherwise fantastic looking game.

Gears of War's sound design is absolutely insane. The musical score is for lack of a better term, superb. The soundtrack is absolutely booming, epic, and downright chilling at parts. The themes are absolutely memorable and the music is so good at some points that it actually makes the overall game better. Achieving something like that is not easy, so it's not hard to appreciate the absolute brilliance that went into the composition of this game's soundtrack. The sound effects are also exceptionally good, there's that eerie Gears of War motif that plays when you find COG tags, or that notoriously awesome sound that plays whenever you've cleared all the enemies in an area - Gears of War simply sounds awesome in all the right ways. The voice acting is solid, but none of the characters are ever developed beyond the basic requirements, but you'll still grow attached to their occasional bickering and humour. Gears of War's weapons all sound incredibly beastly and it's immensely satisfying to blast your enemies into oblivion whether you're frying them with the Hammer of Dawn; grinding them to bits with the chainsaw; or blowing them to pieces with the Boomshot.

The single-player campaign of Gears of War is so well designed that you're guaranteed to play through it at least twice, and possibly even more due to the addition of co-op, both online and off. There's also a multiplayer mode, and while the majority of the community has probably migrated to Gears of War 2, it's still there if you want to get your original 4 on 4 Gears of War on.

Gears of War is simply just an outstandingly produced action game experience. It features a memorable action-packed campaign with some incredibly tense moments, thrilling shootouts, memorable boss encounters, and just a downright awesome experience in every way you could want. Gears of War is the first game that truly took the current generation by storm and made it something awesome and memorable - something you just simply couldn't miss out on. No Xbox 360 game collection is complete without this absolutely fantastic, bloodthirsty, ridiculously awesome action game.

Score.

Yes we have been drawn against our friends from across the pond and not only that but it'll be both teams first game of the tournament! I know football isn't the US' main sport but I would've thought that match up will bring about some interest.

Other groups of interest include the so-called "Group of Death" (the name given to the group with theoretically the best teams in it despite the seeding system) which has Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal. On paper North Korea are the weak link there but you never know. After cheating their way to the finals France have arguably the easiest group alongside South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay. South Africa are only top seed due to them hosting the tournament and therefore are theoretically the weakest of the top teams.

I'd link the full draw but it'll be everywhere so if you're interested it won't be hard to find! So instead here's a nice picture of the draw featuring FIFA Secretary Jerome Valcke (who looks worryingly like England manager Cappello) alongside the lovely Charlize Theron who did her best to feign interest while presenting and David Beckham in the background.

WCD

In other news season 9 of Scrubs started this week (or season 1 of Scrubs: Med School depending on your opinion)! And slightly surprisingly it was really good. Have a look at what I made of the episode here if you're interested. Despite loosing most of the main cast for this year (although every ex main character except Carla was in the premiere) it still feels like the great show it always was. Time will tell if the new characters can fill the void when JD finally moves on, but for now it's still a great watch.

ScrubsS9

As well as new main characters the background cast has been expanded a bit, the most noticeable inclusion is a stunning Australian girl who's character name I can't actually remember (I wonder if she's happy with the group the Aussies got in the World Cup?). She's of interest not only because she's super-hot but because she was on Aussie soap Neighbours a couple of years ago which is a fairly big show over here in the UK. And for proof that Australia produces the most gorgeous women here's nice picture of her.

NW

In other news Scotland's really, really cold! Ok it always has been but you kind of forget over the summer/autumn. Still if the cold weather means it's almost Christmas I'm happy with it! Shame we haven't had any snow here yet though.

Well thanks for reading and hope you all have a great weekend!

I miss her more then baseball! :'(

Apparantly every one of my classes decided that after Thanksgiving they would give either a test or make a major project due the week we got back. So right now I'm going nuts trying to finish everything, while studying for 2 lab practicals and a major test this Friday. Not to mention I also have to take my permit tests so that I can actually start my job soon.

So I'm going just a little bit crazy. Just a little.

After this Friday I'll thankfully get a breather before finals actually start. From there, it's home free.

Doesn't help either that my roommate got Left 4 Dead 2. AHH!!

It is the most addicting game I've played in a long time. The graphics are excellent and the game itself is qute interesting. I highly recommend it. A warning to the wise, if you don't have time to play for a while don't start the game. You've been warned, you wont want to stop.

I made homemade cranberry sauce, which was a big hit. I took the recipe off a sugar box and used half the amount of sugar. It was so sweet that I can't imagine using any more. Do the people who write the recipes even taste the results?
