So sad I was 6 years too late to play this legendary game, I spend my entire life between 12 and 17 playing Warcraft III & Frozen Throne, Red Alert 2, Starcraft and Counter Strike, only to realized the existence of Gamespot and this, Rome Total War!
@20096 @WillyChong Yeah this game still kicks serious ass and it's not so graphically backwards that you wont want to play it.
I really want this. I love Shogun 2, and I am a history fanboy for the Roman times. It is also real cheap on steam. (Only $10 for the base game, Alexander, and the Barbarian Invasion all together.)
You will always come back to Rome Total War, it is such a good game and has so much replayability. Where else can you command the roman legions in such an epic way?
This is without a doubt the best Total War ever and maybe even the best RTS And TBS ever. Just has a better feel than all the others after it like as if they made Rome too good and couldnt compete with themselves.
@Neil_Clancy Actually the fact is that latin wasn't so much spoken as greek was, even in rome itself. Most romans spoke greek fluently and used latin mostly as an official and religious language.
This + expansion is $9.99 on Steam.Is this a good game for a noob for this type a game?
@Renoo27 Rome is a classic, so you should get it no matter what. I found the Gold Edition of it (which includes the expansion Barbarian Invasion) for about 18$ so you might be able to afford Napoleon as well!
It's been years since this game came out, it is long since old and out dated: I still play it all the time. This is one of the best games I have ever played. Most RTS's allow for winning with numbers, in R:TW this is NOT the case. Often I have defended both small and large cities with odds of a few hundred against well over a 1000 and won! This game is truly about strategy and tactics. STILL A GREAT BUY, and never fails to to leave you wanting to play again. This game will always be in my top 3. Maybe a dated now, but still worth playing.

@Neil_Clancy, so your saying the likelihood of Australian accents were higher than Italian? It's not about what languages they were speaking at the time, as you are right, it was probably Latin, it's about what helps or breaks immersion, and hearing Australian accents in a game about Rome is immersion breaking and Italian accents (or European at any rate) would be more immersive. It would have taken so little more to have European voices and I believe it was only arrogance that they used Australian voice actors. This arrogance has grown because of laid back attitudes like yours and has ultimately brought us ETW and NTW and a Shogun and MTW that don;t work on many modern PC's with the developer not interested in fixing them, despite another, smaller publisher, CD Red Projekt having a similar problem with a similar product released at a similar time called: 'Cossacks' and releasing last year a DirectX hack to allow their game to work!
@Humorguy_basic You do realize that the ancient Romans did not have accents identical to modern Italians, right? And the Roman empire was so vast that people from different areas spoke Latin with many different accents.
I remember when i got this for like $49.99, all the hours I've lost in this game was well worth it.
I would have gave it a 9.1 but in the end I give it 8.8. Why? Those stupid Australian accents!!! I know the game was programmed in Australia, but could they have not found people with Italian accents over there!!!
This is a fantastic game and easily one of the best RTS games of all time and surpasses all its sequels by a considerable margin. Must buy for all RTS fans, and the bonus of course, is that any PC can run this game now since its so old...AND it still look pretty nice ^_^

Ive finished them all... the ambience is great... gameplay doesnt really deliver thoug... i mean i guess if its those ppl who are really into realism...but really the combat is very basic... im aware that most ppl here are fanboys but still i thot i shuld give a reality check since ur into realism

This might be a stupid question, but does this game have single player skirmish (or conquest, or whatever it's called) mode, or only a single player campaign?
just bought this and medievil 2 :) want empires but cant afford but this looks incredible non the less :)
Please note that Shogun and the first Medieval Total War (part of the 'Empires' Total War collection and still available in the UK on budget labels like Sold Out) DO NOT work on 8000 series NVidia cards. The problem has been known for over a year and no fix has been forthcoming from CA. Therefore RTW is the oldest Total War that works on 8000 series cards.
