I find it extremely disappointing that a game like this gets such bad press simply because the RPG market has degenerated to equating free-questing with failure. I'm not entirely certain what appeal there actually is in having your hand held throughout the course of a game, but if I wanted a linear story over which i had no control (ala Final Fantasy), I'd go read a book! Sure, Romancing Saga may not be as visually impressive as some games and the 'storyline' may not be as concretely developed, but it harkens marvelously back to an earlier age of console RPGs. An age in which, I suspect, many of the reviewers of this game were still learning to walk and feed themselves. Perhaps much of the appeal is indeed nostalgic, I don't know. But whatever the case, if you're a fan of classic, freestyle RPG's that can be (very) difficult due to the lack of linear progression, then I strongly recommend this little gem.
