Atari releases new information on its PlayStation 2 version of the classic Parker Brothers strategy board game.

Originally scheduled for release last November, Atari's PlayStation 2 version of Risk is based on the classic turn-based strategy board game of the same name. The game, which is currently in development at Cyberlore Studios, promises to remain true to the original board game while introducing a number of new features.

For starters, the game will feature three different modes of play: classic Risk, mission Risk, and capital Risk. It's not currently clear exactly what the different gameplay modes will involve, but Atari has revealed that you'll be able to alter a few of the game's basic rules by making changes to territory troop maximums, chain fortifications, attack advantages, and whether or not commanders will be available. The game will also feature multiple selectable map designs.

The PS2 version of Risk will feature online support for up to six players, and the game's 10 AI opponents with different personalities and playing styles should provide a lasting challenge should you choose to play on your own. During battles, you'll be given advice from historic military leaders, and if you play well enough, you'll be rewarded with medals and bonus content for your efforts.

Risk for the PlayStation 2 is currently scheduled for release on September 9. For more information, check out our previous coverage of the game.
