Are the fights really hard or am I just really bad? Are there any tips for me to improve?

The combat needs a bit getting used to. You have to plan your character a bit. Do you want to use swords, or guns (if you support the colonizer inquisition), or swords and voodoo (if you support the natives)?

I went sword and voodoo as it is really really fun. I keep my Firearms at 4 for the Pistol skills I need. My Cunning is high (5) for my kleptomania and I'm focusing on Blades (4) and Voodoo (3) now.

Initial fights will be tough, yes. You just need more practice. I find the combat really fun.

    Tips:

    1. Don't take Patty to Steelbeard.
    2. Explore.
    3. Ration the gold. Spend it only if you're sure.
    4. Learn and use kick.
    5. Dodge manually.
    6. Use the pistol.
    7. Watch and learn enemy movements.

Yeah, you'll want to keep a party member at all times. They can hold an enemy's attention while you hit them from behind.

If I started over I'd use my money to upgrade blades first. Parry and strong hit at the very least. Money is tight in the beginning and I got stuck with no parry or strong ability on an island that didn't have any blade trainers. It made combat a frustrating mess for that entire island, but I had lots of money to train up blades after I got back to a trainer.

The combat seems really subpar to other games like it, it feels clunky, like you are using heavy steel armour and not used to it.

Strong attacks are probably one of the most important skills you can learn because they let you hit hard from a farther distance because as you wind up the attack you move towards your enemy. So you can time you attacks so the heavy attack hits just as you get into range of your enemy. So you run away-heavy attack-run away-heavy attack. Very useful for the obnosious animals.

From my experience if you want the game to go smoothly you should focus on melee combat first until you get those vital fighting skills. You can always get your cunning up later, there's really no sections of the game that get locked out so you don't have to worry about missed thieving opportunities. The only thing you need to worry about is getting as many animal harvesting tools as early as possible.

    I agree with this.
