The giant enemies within this game are special, especially since they randomly appear.

Its a great game. Lots of people and lots of fun.

You know, I was never really impressed with this game when it was announced, released, or after I tried the trial. I thought that the game was just too much like WoW, and I never bothered with it. But I spent some time looking into what went on in the last year, and they've been doing nothing but pumping out content, something that Blizzard kinda just stopped doing. I'm getting more and more tempted to buy it and play it, at least until GW2 releases.

Does this have a guild system like wow?

In other words do you have to join a guild to gain access to end game loot?

I played Wow for over 3 years. I quit because it took over my life. Just wondering if this is slightly more flexible?

@maximo It has guilds who you can join just like wow, but im not in a guild and im doin just fine, the rifts in this game is like raids i guess. And they accour on your regular map and anyone can join in on the fun.

What about player-versus-player aspects? Class balancing? EGC? Combat style?!

You can't give a relevant score based on the fact that the game is polished right from the release, and that it looks good.

Time to add this to the growing pile of discarded reviews, all this one has convinced me to do is to keep on playing WoW for the time being.

Sorry Kevin, your RPG game reviews are usually pretty good, but this one was disappointing.

It took some getting used to but I'm liking the game. But at the same time it's pissing me off because my experience in the game isn't to it's full potential. I'm up to level 21 and have only FULLY completed one rift all the way up to the final boss. And the reason behind this is because there's practically no one around every time I encounter a rift. My first experience with a zone-wide invasion was fun at first, until the a$$hole level 50 that was in the group with me and 2 others at my level decided to suddenly log off right after pulling a final boss. I could go on and on but I won't. Yes, I'm liking the game but it has a HUGE flaw and that is it needs lots of people around all the time if you want to enjoy the game to it's full potential. Invasions are a great idea, but imagine trying to take one on with only a few players. I'm missing out on all the best gear and fun because there's never enough people around. Other than that massive problem the game is great, especially the ascended soul system, so many choices it's insane. Anyways, it only has to entertain me until Star Wars: The Old Republic accepts me into the open beta or releases and then I'm cancelling my account for RIFT and WoW.

Good review, looks interesting. But how can you read that tiny, tiny writing on the computer screen?

New benchmark in MMO's. WoW is 6 years old, it can't hold a candle to RIFT right now. FACTS. anyone who says else is a liar or has subjective reasons for lying.

According to Raptr Rift has gone to 50% of it's peak. And at @surfsup327 No, it isn't, and be thankful it isn't. Re-releasing the same game year after year doesn't improve the MMO genre. We need games that break free of the trap and change things up.

@Allicrombie: Definitely give it a go, especially as there is now a 7 day trial. I used to play WoW a lot, until I lost interest a little while before Cata. I tried Cata (even bought the Collectors Ed), but its just lost its way for me. Rift is refreshing and great fun. I was really surprised by how well it plays already

I've been off WoW for awhile and been thinking about trying this.

@SurfsUp327 Ughhh the game was inspired from WoW, EQ2, and Warhammer Online. I love Rift because it's all put into one package. Lets just hope they don't simplify everything like they did with WoW, and EQ2. Hmmm?

This game looks awesome. I've been wanting to get back into WoW, but since I haven't played since Burning Crusade was the current edition, I don't think I'm going to get back into it anytime soon. I might have to run out and get this so I have something to do on my laptop at work and school.

I have to admit RIFT is definately a new benchmark in MMORPG's it definately is better than others on the market (World of Warcraft of course)

I'll take your word for it heh, the criticisms seem valid. Seems like a great game though, I love the idea of a game that's "Like WoW, but not". Not to say that this is a WoW clone, which it is definitely not. Btw imo it's wierd that you criticized it for mobs being packed together, as things like that are usually patched rather quickly.

@Zilched -- I played far beyond level 20. Just because you see certain footage in a video review doesn't mean it represents only up to the level reached, or every character played. I don't spend all my time playing games hooked up to recording equipment, you know :)

As it stands, we make public our reviewing guidelines, which have this to say about reviews of MMOs: "We evaluate persistent-world games by playing them extensively for a number of days or weeks around the time of their releases. We typically invest approximately 30 hours' worth of playing time before committing to our evaluations. While this does not necessarily allow us to cover the long-term prospects of a given persistent-world game, the truth is that we do not know what the future holds for any such games, and thus, we evaluate them at that immediate point in time based on what we feel is a lengthy amount of play."

In Rift's case, as with most MMOs, I committed more time to the game than 30 hours. According to my Raptr profile, I played 43, though that doesn't include any time I spent when Raptr wasn't running, and time on my laptop, which isn't running Raptr.

Played WoW for 4 years on & off, have a level 85 in every class, exept my Deathknight only lvl 61 & Goblin level 48, I still like the game but I have done almost everything there is to do now (exept for get my achievements to 100% BORING)! So today I bought RIFT I didnt realy know much about it, all I knew was lot's of my WoW Guild member's were taking a break from WoW to play RIFT, so I took a chance and have not installed it yet, but from what Iv read and seen, it is pretty much WoW with updated graphics with a trist of Champions online build mechanics. E.g. When you lvl in Champions online you can pick a new power from any class (making the game more soloable) this will deffo make PvP more intense and tactical build wise (IMO). I cant wait to play it, just waiting for my WoW subs to run out next Monday. If anyone playes RIFT reading this, can you plz mail me which server is best, as in social and friendly (one downfall of WoW unsociable I play on Hellscream EU) who do regular things together.....THANK U ;-)

Good review, but I can tell from the video that the reviewer only played to perhaps level 20. If you are going to give an honest opinion I'd say play the game to the the highest level before giving it, or give the job to someone who has...

Gotta say it feels just like wow, which i didn't really like. I mostly get bored in about one month of any game I play. One of the few i actually played about a half an year and the only one i actually paid money for is Lotro, which is perfect for Lotr fans. Rift seems to be nice too, but it's a lot like wow, and wow has that great storyline which most of the other games don't. MMOs are gold mines today for the creators. My advice is to try at least some of them before playing one for the rest of your life. P.S. the reason i quit wow is that it was too much about math and numbers. The lotr's epic fights were a lot better and more interesting. Even tho i quit playing lotro too, my gamer experience says it's worth playing.

I got hyped about this game when I bought it 2 months after quiting wow for, this time I hope, definitly. I was Indeed familiar with the mechanic since its almost exactly like wow. But I got bored pretty fast after spending multiple hours lvling my character. I think I'm just bored from mmo for now. Rift prolly have a lot to offer but I'll let go of fantasy worlds for now and wait for finaly a real sci-fi mmo when Swtor release, Something in which I actually care about the lore.

I am playing this game now and I have to say that this is one very nice game. A lot of good concepts are incorporated from WOW and a lot more refined things too. Not only this is a good looking game but so far it is very engaging and I havent seen anything wrong. I would highly recommend checking this out if you are thinking about it. A lot of interesting classes also like Bard and others. just fyi, I have played end game content of WOW for past 3 years.

I'm done with MMO's, WoW's newest expansion was the last straw from me. It's all about going from one area to another and doing quests over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

rift seems to have gotten what it deserves its a great game but a little derivitive thus got a 8 thats still a great score

Looks nice, but there's still a handful of things that just turn us off from MMOs. Spend all that time making an awesome character that fits into a magnificent looking world, but the chat channel will just be an endless immersion destroying scroll of players spamming desperately to sell their worthless magic elf boots. Can forgive grinding, don't get the appeal of crafting, and scavenger hunting in most games feels out of place.

Basically Gamespot is fanboys with certain developers, Kevin being the biggest, so with that being said if an MMO is not made by Blizzard he will not give it above an 8. Well maybe when TOR comes out he will give it an 8.5. Hate this site waste of time. This game does look like a wow clone with better graphics though, which in my opinion is sad. Plus when will MMO games get away from the go kill X deliver what they drop. This is why I just don't play them anymore.
