Yahoo! Solitaire Review

While there are better solitaire games out there, this one will adequately serve your needs.

Internet gaming and mobile gaming reportedly appeal to similar demographics. It's therefore relatively unsurprising that Yahoo!, purveyor of the most popular parlor games on the Net, has made a strategic expansion into the wireless space. One of the company's first titles is Yahoo! Solitaire, which is simply a functional game of cards that is not unusual or outstanding in any way.

Do you solitaire?
Do you solitaire?

Yahoo! Solitaire features both the freecell and Klondike solitaire types, and uses a decent numerical interface to manipulate cards in both games. Each space on the board is associated with a number on the keypad, so, to move a card, you have only to enter its starting and ending locations. This interface has been used successfully by other games, such as Jamdat Solitaire, and beats joyless cursor navigation. You also have a soft-key menu that lets you restart the game at will, or quit, should you tire of playing solitaire. That's about it.

The game's presentation is adequate for a Series 60 solitaire title. Each card is readily recognizable. You won't find yourself uncomfortably ambivalent as to whether you're selecting a king or a queen--that kind of thing can prove embarrassing, and friends seem to never let you forget. Yahoo! Solitaire also features sound. This feature asserts itself through a loud introductory jingle, and then promptly disappears. You won't miss it.

Yahoo! Solitaire toes the line in every conceivable way. This is a competent game of solitaire by people who understand card games. While there are better solitaire games out there, this one will adequately serve your needs.

  • You can play it alone!
  • You can play it on a phone!

The Bad

  • Not particularly exciting or revolutionary.
  • The sound isn't great, but whatever--this is solitaire.
