Marvel Heroes Review

  • First Released Jun 3, 2013
    released
  • PC

Marvel Heroes is a colorful free-to-play role-playing game that doesn't always do its powerhouse of a license justice.

Marvel fans have been consistently lucky when it comes to video game adaptations: the indomitable Marvel vs. Capcom, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and a bevy of others are excellent examples. It's a rich, engaging universe teeming with different personalities, so like in the world of gaming itself, there's something for everyone. Marvel Heroes is a colorful representation of that varied spirit, allowing you to take up the mantle of your favorite superhero and embark on a journey through familiar set pieces of the Marvel mythos. But as with some of Marvel's youngest talent, the potential for greatness has yet to be refined.

Now Playing: Video Review - Marvel Heroes

Still, there are plenty of reasons to take a chance on this free-to-play powerhouse. Comic fans will appreciate the original narrative that focuses on both lesser-known and prominent personalities in the Marvel multiverse. The spotlight shines on characters from Thor to Wonder Man, and the game is better off for it. Missions and objectives are woven seamlessly into the plot, with milestones and boss battles separated into bite-size chapters. The action plays out in a style similar to that of Diablo or any other loot-happy clickfest: an isometric view with chests to discover, interchangeable baddies to fell, and a staggering number of side quests.

A league of nefarious supervillains are banding together to aid Dr. Doom in yet another bid to take over the world, and it's up to you (and a group of friends, if you prefer) to stop him. It's standard fare, especially for the superhero multiverse, but anyone aching for interactions between Moondragon and the Hulk or Tony Stark and the Scarlet Witch will no doubt be jumping with joy at the chance to impersonate a favorite character.

The first hero is free, and you can choose from five to get things under way: Hawkeye, the Thing, the Scarlet Witch, Storm, and Daredevil. Each comes standard with his or her own set of special abilities and a fighting style distinct from the rest. Hawkeye is a ranged fighter, while the Scarlet Witch excels at inducing status effects and magical damage. Skill points earned while grinding can be used to upgrade existing powers or unlock brand-new ones. Special attacks, such as Thor's Thunderous Charge or Cable's Bold Aura, require spirit points (stamina) to execute. Spamming these moves ensures a quicker route to victory, but you'll run out unless you allow enough time for the gauge to recharge. There's a minimal wait for the meter to fill again, so you've got plenty of room to play around with flashy finishers intertwined with melee combos.

It's easy to lose track of your hero when battles get busy.
It's easy to lose track of your hero when battles get busy.

Interchangeable abilities offer a chance to experiment with different combat strategies when the standard "left click, left click, right click" begins to wear on the nerves. And considering the number of nameless baddies you have to wade through in each instance, it will. Luckily, the waves of inconsequential henchmen you have to cleave through to get to the boss encounters are good for boatloads of loot, including items used for buffs and various types of passive support. Just don't be surprised if that's all the baddies end up being to you: living treasure chests.

Speaking of treasure, if you choose not to drop any real-world money, you're saddled with some useless items. Equipment locks to one character, and enemies drop various pieces meant for use by characters you may never see in-game unless you purchase them or find a random unlock token. It's a frustrating move on the game's part to entice you in such a way, especially if you're dead set on keeping the "free" in free-to-play, but at least there is a wide variety of heroes to unlock should you find Marvel Heroes worthy of tangible coinage.

That's something that should be given a good amount of thought, however, because the content simply doesn't drive you to purchase additional characters. Microtransactions can no doubt augment your experience, but they're not required to accomplish great things as your chosen hero. Despite the variety of heroes, accessories, equipment, and locales, bashing the same skulls in over and over is dull. Whether you group with friends or fly solo, the sojourn to eventually topple Dr. Doom becomes hopelessly tedious. For this reason, if you plan on seeing an endgame, it's best to tackle Marvel Heros in bursts, at least this early in the game's life cycle, where daily missions and survival challenges aren't enough to keep you repeating the same actions each day.

Things are getting a little rowdy on the dance floor.
Things are getting a little rowdy on the dance floor.

Luckily, there are plenty of players online, and decent lines of communication to keep things as streamlined as possible. Player versus player takes your strategic prowess to another level entirely, and because all of that is free, there's no immediate incentive to spend a penny to "improve" your game. But should you feel like dropping some coin, you'll find that none of Marvel Heroes' premium content smooths over its issues. A new costume for Captain America won't make the grind more exciting, nor lengthen the game once you've mastered your character. Extras like pets or additional characters are interesting, though not particularly useful. Right now, Marvel Heroes is rough. With additional content in the form of new instances or variations in enemy types it could, like Peter Parker and his metamorphosis into Spider-Man, come out swinging.

The Good

  • Original storyline caters to comic fans
  • A multitude of characters for every play style
  • Fun combos and abilities to string together

The Bad

  • Lack of variety leads to tedium
  • A lot of loot is unusable unless you purchase additional heroes

I can only assume this review was outsourced to some freelancer and then published without any actual checking to gauge the accuracy...

1) everything except costumes (which are cosmetic only, and even these drop albeit VERY rarely) can be earned in-game via drops (equipables) or bought with the in-game currency (ALL heroes, random boxes and some crafting mats).

2) I can find no real objectionable content/game design element in this game that is not in keeping with other ARPGs I've played (Diablo I, II, III, Torchlight I & II, Path of Exile, and a ton of other online ARPGs). Anyone who likes ARPGs and is a Marvel fan will be hooked to this game, more likely than not.

3) Game is being continually updated; the team is taking in player feedback and the community gets to have a say.

RE-REVIEW this or TAKE IT DOWN. Please. This shouldn't even be here if Gamespot can't take the time to post an accurate review.

It's about time for this to get a re-review. For one, the guy wasn't very accurate to begin with and didn't seem to really spend that much time learning about what he was talking about. For example, paying money has nothing to do with drops, and you don't just get one hero free. In addition, the game has received a ton of upgrades since then, and Gazillion is probably the most involved with the community among devs.

They forgot to mention that combats are terrible. They didn't code any collision, neither any sound or visual effect for combats.Even Rayman punches have more repercussion than any hero in MH. Terrible game. 5.5 is too much for this crap. Also the devs keep sckn up all their users so they keep selling, but they don't do any shit to fix their game. But to be fair, they couldn't even if they wanted to. They don't have the necessary skills.

Are you sure you played Marvel Heroes? Punches send badguys flying across rooms and powers cause quite a bit of desctuction in the background.

I just downloaded this last weekend. Given the review, I had pretty low expectations. I had an itch to play a Diablo style game that wasn't D3, so I figured what the hell. It's free. I found the game pretty fun. I spent 10 hours playing it the first day. I'm guessing the loot system has been tweaked since this review because almost all the loot that dropped was for the hero I was playing. Maybe 1 in 20 drops were for a different hero.

game is ok and yes its Diablo with Marvel heroes

I don't care for how you gather heroes...

A) Drop ( you can buy cards to increase your chances of good drops)

B) $10+ hero

Looks like money is it's #1 reason for existence.

@megakick log back in and check it out; new Eternity Splinter system. you can now buy heroes with the in-game currency. No need to pay a dime. Even the drop rate boosts can be had for free.

@AzatiS He was also one the people responsible for the Hellgate: London fiasco, so basically, every game David Brevik has worked on since leaving Blizzard has been a stinker. Meanwhile, Diablo 3 was one of the most successful games released in 2012, and Brevik had nothing to do with it. What's amazing to me is that people still haven't caught on to the fact that Blizzard was the real reason for Brevik's early success, or perhaps I should say that Brevik just happened to be on board while Blizzard made successful games, and he latched onto that success to make an undeserved name for himself.

Funny how this game gets a 5.5 right away, even though it'sstill a new game that's bound to have changes along the way, while Dragon's Prophet, which is a glitchfest, didn't got a review yet...

This site is becoming a joke...

@Eraldus No, a joke would be reviewing a game that is still labeled as being in beta, which Dragon's Prophet is. Gazillion chose to end the Marvel Heroes beta and in doing so implicitly gave critics permission to review the game. That was their choice and they knew the consequences of it.

Every video game now has the potential to be updated and improved over time. It's ludicrous to ask critics to review anything but what exists here and now.

@Eraldus lol youth. Always so overly optimistic these days.

unfortunately what you hope for is the very definition of a pipe dream and if you had any experience with beta's alpha's or simply pre-release games you'd know that.

Once a game hits that phase only little things can be addressed simply. Unless there is a major problem they rarely touch anything of real importance past that phase beyond balance tweeks.

This whole industry has come to rely on the optimism and hope of people such as yourselves, always holding out the carrot and hoping never realize that what you really want is never going to come.

Its easier to herd sheeple then to polish a turd.

@Crush_Project @Eraldus When DUOU launch you have almost nothing to do go and play it now !

And when GS review a game they should go back after a year and review it again and ofc they don't do it. This game is not 5.5 it is a 8 and i am sure after a year it will be a 9 for sure.

GS reviews become a joke to me !

@Eraldus I wouldn't say it got one right away. The game has been out for nearly 3 weeks. Now the review itself, quality wise is definitely not worthy to be on Gamespot. It barely covers the basics of the game and doesn't go into anything in any detail. There were previews with more information than this review provides.

Yes, I also find it difficult to locate the exact center of my screen. It's like the center of my screen moves off of the center of my screen during all those confusing boss battles, oh wait, THE CENTER OF YOUR SCREEN DOESN'T MOVE.

Wish Gamespot would remove this review and post one with more content/explanation of what is to be found in the game. In a decade plus of reading Gamespot this is easily one of the most shallow and least informative reviews I've read. Disappointing as while I may not agree with the rating of the reviewers, I can usually count on GameSpot reviews themselves providing a good overview of what is found in the game.

Why are Electra's boobs completely lopsided in the graphic for the video review? I mean, so-so gameplay is par for the course in games based on comics, but they should be able to *draw*.

It's nice to see all of the constructive criticism from gamers. /sarcasm This is a large problem with gamers, especially the younger ones - they don't know how and/or unwilling to properly critique something. Instead, they demean and insult the developers and call said game garbage, with most of them not even having a clue as to how game development works.

Yes, a 7 is reasonable. The game is new, so servers are naturally going to be taken down fairly often to address problems and add patches. Every new online game goes through this trial by fire, so to speak. I've put almost 100 hours into the game and only twice was I unable to log on. On top of that, the recent patches have done a good job of fixing some of the issues that people have been having.

The game has a lot of potential, but I just feel like they are riding the success train from all the Marvel movies. They just want the name on their game and hope some nerd with a credit card can cum in his pants over their favorite hero.

It's fun, but the review is right about this: it's a fairly shallow experience. It's best to play for an hour or so, you're not gonna spend all night playing.

And people complaining about hard drive space. Dude, visit Newegg. Are you a hobo?

It's free and a nice diversion.

This is the size of games today. You don't want to download it or play it no one is forcing you.

Fyi, I don't sit in front of my computer when a game downloads, just saying.

11gb is fudging ridiculous. Theres games that are 4x the size of this one that are less than a quarter in GB size.

@wexorian ugh that hurt to even read.

Sry man, but still never seen a f2p game that even got a c- rating in my book yet, and the only think worse then a f2p game, is a f2p gamer.

Those folks really do represent the lowest skill level and competition in video gaming history. sry, but f2p games have rotted the communal mind to the point of zombies.

@dragoonslayer19 The only way that would be possible would be if they used the idea of the Player becoming a hero in New York City etc...

Grow into your hero character, and do it in a free roam, free form way.

No linear A, B, C, path.

Basically if you can imagine Skyrim but flipped to be a Superhero RPG game, that would be pretty close, actually that might be IT. I think that's the formula. You'd have to find a company serious and adventurous enough to try their hand at it though. Even though Superheroes are at their highest point in popularity in history. [ go figure dumb game companies ].
