Marvel Heroes Review

  • First Released Jun 3, 2013
    released
  • PC

Marvel Heroes is a colorful free-to-play role-playing game that doesn't always do its powerhouse of a license justice.

Marvel fans have been consistently lucky when it comes to video game adaptations: the indomitable Marvel vs. Capcom, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and a bevy of others are excellent examples. It's a rich, engaging universe teeming with different personalities, so like in the world of gaming itself, there's something for everyone. Marvel Heroes is a colorful representation of that varied spirit, allowing you to take up the mantle of your favorite superhero and embark on a journey through familiar set pieces of the Marvel mythos. But as with some of Marvel's youngest talent, the potential for greatness has yet to be refined.

Now Playing: Video Review - Marvel Heroes

Still, there are plenty of reasons to take a chance on this free-to-play powerhouse. Comic fans will appreciate the original narrative that focuses on both lesser-known and prominent personalities in the Marvel multiverse. The spotlight shines on characters from Thor to Wonder Man, and the game is better off for it. Missions and objectives are woven seamlessly into the plot, with milestones and boss battles separated into bite-size chapters. The action plays out in a style similar to that of Diablo or any other loot-happy clickfest: an isometric view with chests to discover, interchangeable baddies to fell, and a staggering number of side quests.

A league of nefarious supervillains are banding together to aid Dr. Doom in yet another bid to take over the world, and it's up to you (and a group of friends, if you prefer) to stop him. It's standard fare, especially for the superhero multiverse, but anyone aching for interactions between Moondragon and the Hulk or Tony Stark and the Scarlet Witch will no doubt be jumping with joy at the chance to impersonate a favorite character.

The first hero is free, and you can choose from five to get things under way: Hawkeye, the Thing, the Scarlet Witch, Storm, and Daredevil. Each comes standard with his or her own set of special abilities and a fighting style distinct from the rest. Hawkeye is a ranged fighter, while the Scarlet Witch excels at inducing status effects and magical damage. Skill points earned while grinding can be used to upgrade existing powers or unlock brand-new ones. Special attacks, such as Thor's Thunderous Charge or Cable's Bold Aura, require spirit points (stamina) to execute. Spamming these moves ensures a quicker route to victory, but you'll run out unless you allow enough time for the gauge to recharge. There's a minimal wait for the meter to fill again, so you've got plenty of room to play around with flashy finishers intertwined with melee combos.

It's easy to lose track of your hero when battles get busy.
It's easy to lose track of your hero when battles get busy.

Interchangeable abilities offer a chance to experiment with different combat strategies when the standard "left click, left click, right click" begins to wear on the nerves. And considering the number of nameless baddies you have to wade through in each instance, it will. Luckily, the waves of inconsequential henchmen you have to cleave through to get to the boss encounters are good for boatloads of loot, including items used for buffs and various types of passive support. Just don't be surprised if that's all the baddies end up being to you: living treasure chests.

Speaking of treasure, if you choose not to drop any real-world money, you're saddled with some useless items. Equipment locks to one character, and enemies drop various pieces meant for use by characters you may never see in-game unless you purchase them or find a random unlock token. It's a frustrating move on the game's part to entice you in such a way, especially if you're dead set on keeping the "free" in free-to-play, but at least there is a wide variety of heroes to unlock should you find Marvel Heroes worthy of tangible coinage.

That's something that should be given a good amount of thought, however, because the content simply doesn't drive you to purchase additional characters. Microtransactions can no doubt augment your experience, but they're not required to accomplish great things as your chosen hero. Despite the variety of heroes, accessories, equipment, and locales, bashing the same skulls in over and over is dull. Whether you group with friends or fly solo, the sojourn to eventually topple Dr. Doom becomes hopelessly tedious. For this reason, if you plan on seeing an endgame, it's best to tackle Marvel Heros in bursts, at least this early in the game's life cycle, where daily missions and survival challenges aren't enough to keep you repeating the same actions each day.

Things are getting a little rowdy on the dance floor.
Things are getting a little rowdy on the dance floor.

Luckily, there are plenty of players online, and decent lines of communication to keep things as streamlined as possible. Player versus player takes your strategic prowess to another level entirely, and because all of that is free, there's no immediate incentive to spend a penny to "improve" your game. But should you feel like dropping some coin, you'll find that none of Marvel Heroes' premium content smooths over its issues. A new costume for Captain America won't make the grind more exciting, nor lengthen the game once you've mastered your character. Extras like pets or additional characters are interesting, though not particularly useful. Right now, Marvel Heroes is rough. With additional content in the form of new instances or variations in enemy types it could, like Peter Parker and his metamorphosis into Spider-Man, come out swinging.

The Good

  • Original storyline caters to comic fans
  • A multitude of characters for every play style
  • Fun combos and abilities to string together

The Bad

  • Lack of variety leads to tedium
  • A lot of loot is unusable unless you purchase additional heroes

Giving 5.5 to a MMO that barely came out and that still has to go for a lot of changes, updates, etc... is ridiculous... Sorry, but this review was unfair...

@Eraldus No... it sounds like the game is unfair, as in unfinished. Sorry, but games deserve to be reviewed as is, not as they will be.

@JustPlainLucas @Eraldus Indeed. There are so many games around that have a great concept but are just not well made overall.

This game needs to be much more vivid in all area's at least before giving it a good score for example.

I would love to see a complete overhaul of this game.

@Eraldus You probably haven't read IGN's review yet. Until I saw the score, I almost thought they played two different games.

If i was to rate this game id give it a 2 out of 10, its boring, samie, does nothing new what so ever and doesnt even get the staples of a good MMORPG right, you play as a character walk past 10-15 of that same character, the skill system is rushed, the story is barely original(talking about the cubes involvement again) and lastly the gear you equip doesn't change the appearance at all, something that was forgivable say 8 years ago? but we know diablo 2 is older then that and gets that even right so do i even have to mention the DLC price? no this game is horrible but everyone has their own opinion. And by the way i wanted to like this game, especially when there was a ex diablo 2 worker that helped make it, but its bad.

@Eraldus The fact that you have to pay 20 freaking dollars for a single character, whitout the option of trying him out is enough for this game to get 5/10

@Eraldus Once they start charging for it, it's fair to review it. And they've been charging for it for a looooooooong time already throughout it's beta cycle.

Game is ok, but feels shallow. I think it's a fair review.

@Eraldus not really, its accurate there are no changes small enough to make this game better unless it got a major restructuring.

@Helios_Sun @Eraldus MMOs normally start like that... they normally are buggy, laggy and with a few features available... I'm pretty sure the devs will work on it as the time passes

This game is pretty much for Marvel fans only. The gameplay is pretty solid and the story is decent but the combat is repetitive and does get old quick. The bigger "MMO area's" are pretty laggy but once you get into a smaller section with just 3-4 players its okay. The characters in the store are way to expensive though. This game is simply a one time play through to never touch afterwords again.

This game isn't amazing but it's a whole hell of a lot more fun than Diablo 3 was and still is. It has it's diablo 2 feel which i love and it's keeping me busy until november.

@QuinXuan @00LiteYear But whether the grinding is fun to do is what decides if the game is great or trash.

Played it for like a day, it was alright but got boring quick. It did make me want to finally try DC universe, and that game is extremely fun and has a f2p model that isn't ridiculously overpriced like the crap in this game.

How true, I eventually finished all the content I wanted to in DCUO, but they really do have a lot of bang for the buck and you get your money's worth if you spend money (I did) if you ask me.

I also loved the quite surprisingly fair and balanced Legends PVP. It's all pure skill based. I may go back to try Superman and other new characters like him. Back when I played, it was a Batman hero and villain fest in Legends. Almost no non-batman characters.

@KrackShotz Even if they were completely free of microtransactions and other costs it would still be nice to know if it's worth to bother installing/registering etc.

There are hundreds of F2P and free games out there. I prefer to know a little about a game rather than install and play for a week only to find out it's crap.

@PILINTRA51

I would say it's more in the 6.0-6.7 range? It's more fun than a 5.5 would make it seem imho. The reviewer didn't cover crafting (which makes your rare drops into epics) so I'm not sure if he experienced everything the game had to offer.

You can also convert epics for other characters into epics for your character pretty easily.

So the most powerful drops for other characters -are- quite useable honestly. I would like to see this review re-done. Game's been out for a while yet features in there since launch seem not to be covered very well.

Giving MH a 5.5 is a little low, especially when something as lifeless, bug-ridden, lacking in content and just plain unimaginative as Defiance receives a 6. Some of the issues mentioned in the review aren't exactly accurate either. Ms. Vincent mentions that most loot found is geared towards other characters, which just isn't true. Most gear found, with exception to artifacts and the occasional core, are for the particular character you're playing. Endgame is a bit lacking, Gazillion really needs to add a way to replay the story multiple times a la Diablo, and the prices for some characters are a bit high (which Gazillion is looking into due to feedback on their official forums), but overall Marvel Heroes is a solid game which most certainly, in my opinion, is definitely better than a 5.5. As another poster below me stated, a 7 is reasonable.

Was in the initial wave of beta invites. It sucked then, it sucks now. Grindy without the fun of new aesthetics, no a fun grind so no way I'm building up two characters, ridiculously priced content since the game hasn't established itself .... there's just a lot wrong with this game.

Game is short and feels like mini-Diablo.

So since playing this since beta, I've been a strong supporting of this game. The characters, the story, it was like one of those mini dreams come true...plus my love for Diablo 2 speared me on...even bought a founder's pack for one character.

Then the release came it was good to see everything really working.....but the review is somewhat fair. it does become repetitive and the costs for "bonus content and gear" is very over priced IMHO.

Still I wouldn't give this a 5+, I'd go more with a 7/10. IT is still being fleshed out and the daily challenges are a change of pace from the loot grinding that happens...extra heroes do become available without micro transactions...and the social link up for instances is pretty easy...I have high hopes for this game as it matures and users see new content...free to play is still a nice thing!

Fair review, I found the game fun overall, but short and repetitive and the prices for characters and costumes was ridiculous. $20 for a single character or costume? Not worth it given the other great games you could get with that money on GOG or Steam.
