Halo 4 Review

  • First Released Nov 6, 2012
    released

A thrilling, moving story and intense competitive multiplayer help Halo 4 continue the series' reign as one of the premier shooter franchises.

'

Halo is in new hands. After chronicling humanity's defeat in Halo: Reach, developer and series creator Bungie passed the reins to 343 Industries, who has charted a new course for the iconic Spartan and his AI companion, Cortana. In Halo 4, the duo confronts a fresh new threat to the human race and grapples with mortality in a way the series never has before. The result is the most compelling story a Halo game has ever told, conveyed through a campaign that combines the excellent combat, pacing, and environmental design that have long been hallmarks of the series. The intriguing new cooperative mode feels flimsy, but the competitive multiplayer reasserts itself as one of the most exciting offerings in the genre. Halo 4 doesn't just take the franchise baton in stride; it sprints out confidently to keep Master Chief and company at the head of the pack.

Now Playing: Video Review - Halo 4

At the end of Halo 3, Master Chief and Cortana were adrift on a derelict ship, having just struck the final blow to bring an end to the Covenant's devastating campaign against the human race. Chief then entered cryo-sleep for the next four years, while humanity poured its energies into fortifying its defenses and expanding its galactic presence. A captivating opening cutscene shows this new initiative taking a critical look at the past, foreshadowing some interesting tension later in the game. Meanwhile, Chief and Cortana are roused when they stumble upon a dire threat to humanity's existence. This foe provides the series with its first proper villain, one whose roots in previously-vague Forerunner mythology soon come into frightening focus.

These galactic machinations are dramatic and intriguing, and they are brought to life vividly by Halo 4's stunning technical prowess. From sweeping panoramic vistas to claustrophobic jungle clearings, the environments are rich with detail enhanced by thoughtful lighting and sharp textures. The excellent artistic design that makes human, Covenant, and Forerunner architecture so instantly recognizable is on display once more, helping to create a cohesive sci-fi world. Expressive facial animations bring characters to life, imbuing the cutscenes with extra emotional weight and making the story that much more engaging. It's all tied together with an amazing soundtrack that complements every aspect of the game. Alien environments ring with eerie strains, characters' emotions are reflected in plangent chords, and the intense action is driven along by urgent orchestrations.

Yet for all the excitement and emotion of the main plot, the most engrossing drama of Halo 4 takes place between Master Chief and Cortana. Everyone's favorite artificial intelligence is nearing her expiration date, forcing these two all-but-invincible characters to face the prospect of death in a way they never have. This delicate, degenerative process is handled eloquently, and great voice acting, animation, and writing combine for some poignant moments. 343 Industries delivers a compelling narrative on both an intimate and a grand scale, with a satisfying conclusion that will make you excited for what's to come.

Halo 4 is a striking step up in storytelling for the series, but when it comes to the action, things are more familiar. Halo has always been a shooter built on clear gameplay systems that combine in complex and gratifying ways. The crafty and aggressive enemy AI squads work together, adjusting their tactics as you assault their ranks. Your four-pronged arsenal of guns, grenades, melee attacks, and armor abilities fuels a variety of different battlefield strategies. And the environments both large and small provide enough space to maneuver creatively, occasionally furnishing a vehicle or two for your driving enjoyment.

These systems are a through line in the series and they continue to hold up well in Halo 4, right down to the Covenant enemies that you fight at various points throughout the campaign (apparently not everyone knows the war is over). They still make great foes, but the new Promethean enemies offer a fresh combat challenge. Canine crawlers fire from a distance or swarm up close, while hovering watchers flit back and forth, offering maddening support to their allies. The hulking knights look fearsome and put up a mean fight, teleporting both defensively and offensively to make killing them from a distance a tricky proposition. New enemies come with new weapons too, and though these guns fit familiar niches, neat tweaks like the boltshot's shotgun-esque alternate fire and the scattershot's ricocheting bullets make them feel distinct.

No Caption Provided

As you balance aggression and restraint, you see your enemies doing the same thing, and this tactical interplay makes the core combat eminently engaging and replayable. The campaign is well paced and often challenging, and though some Forerunner areas flirt with repetition, the whole endeavor is exciting for the 8 to 10 hours it takes to finish it. Playing with up to three other players is a blast, and Halo 4's campaign thrives in cooperative play. More Spartans means more freedom for you to employ team tactics, put vehicles to good use, play around with the various game-tweaking skulls, or simply have fun horsing around.

You can also flex your cooperative muscle in a new mode called Spartan Ops. Planned as a regular series, each free, downloadable episode of Spartan Ops comes with a CG-animated short depicting life among the Spartans, as well as a number of brief playable combat scenarios. The first video features a lively cast and some enjoyably dramatic scenes, with animation quality comparable to the cutscenes from the campaign. Though the commanding officer from the video lends some voice-over supervision to the individual scenarios, the missions themselves feel fragmented and disconnected from each other. Though they can be played solo or with up to three others, these skirmishes are over in a matter of minutes, and this brevity makes them feel inconsequential and unsatisfying. Still, it's a flexible and novel way to deliver fresh postrelease content, and it will be interesting to see how the Spartan Ops story builds in the coming weeks and months.

Back on more familiar ground, War Games is the new name for the vaunted competitive multiplayer action that has been a genre standout for more than a decade. The classic deathmatch and objective-based game types return in free-for-all and team varieties, with only a few tweaks and additions. Infection has been renamed Flood, casting the "zombie" characters as Flood-mutated humans with super speed and a giant spike arm that behaves like an energy sword. Regicide is a new free-for-all game type that puts a bounty on the player with the highest score and occasionally grants him or her an overshield or other perk for remaining on top. Invasion is gone, and in its place is Dominion, a team contest focused on capturing and maintaining control of three bases. Bonuses for holding them include spawnable vehicles, automatic turrets, and weapon drops, making for some feisty back-and-forth struggles.

(An important logistical note: To play these modes, you need 2GB of storage space to install War Games, and 1.5GB per episode of Spartan Ops. It's unclear how much space Spartan Ops will demand in the future, but suffice it to say, a memory card won't cut it.)

Halo's competitive multiplayer modes have always dictated the weapons available to players in a given match, creating a level playing field from the get-go. But now, in a move reflective of modern shooter trends, Halo 4 introduces loadouts. These consist of familiar categories like primary and secondary weapons, grenades, and armor abilities, as well as two new attributes that grant small bonuses, like quicker weapon switching, bigger grenade explosions, and broader motion sensor range. You unlock extra loadout slots and the ability to equip these bonuses as you level up, and you must also pay to unlock individual loadout items with points you earn with each rank. It can feel a bit limiting at first, but regardless of your rank, there are always a few fully stocked predetermined loadouts to choose from, so you're never at a disadvantage for being low-level.

No Caption Provided

Not knowing the map is also less of a disadvantage now, because weapons spawned on the battlefield are clearly marked. Furthermore, players who do well can call in their own ordnance drop mid-match. Familiar weapons like needlers, shotguns, and swords are accessible only through such drops, as are new entries like an explosive railgun and a light machine gun. There are even boosts to shields, movement speed, and damage output. Picking one of the three random options in your personal ordnance reward is an interesting strategic decision that affects how you proceed and adds another defensive consideration for your opponents.

New abilities can help you deal with these variables; Promethean Vision lets you see your enemies' silhouettes and identify which weapons they're holding, while a hardlight shield can save you from an imminent explosion. The online battlefields of Halo 4 are more varied than their predecessors, but none of the changes or additions are powerful enough to destabilize the core balance. This plays like a richer version of the competitive Halo that many have come to love over the years, and the new tweaks add a welcome freshness to the action.

If you want to avoid or embrace any given element, you can always fire up a Custom Game and tinker with the battlefield conditions to your heart's content. Options are as robust as ever and are exponentially expandable once you dip into the still-incredibly-powerful Forge level editor. Though it can be daunting, some changes to Forge have made placing objects easier and the whole experience generally more user-friendly. Play around with friends, tweak existing levels to your liking, craft something using the new tools, or simply download the fruits of other people's labor--Forge remains an impressive platform for creative play and thoughtful design.

No Caption Provided

Halo 4 is every bit the massive shooter package that its predecessors were, and it holds the series' standard high. The thrilling and emotional return of Master Chief and Cortana is the highlight, and the campaign breaks new ground in narrative quality for the franchise. The top-notch competitive multiplayer picks up where Halo: Reach left off, infusing the action with some mainstream elements while still remaining undeniably unique. Spartan Ops may stay a mere sideshow or prove its worth in the weeks to come, but there's no doubting that the next planned Halo trilogy is off to a great start. 343 Industries should be proud of what it has accomplished, and you should be excited to experience it for yourself.

i honestly think this is the best halo to date...the storyline is compelling the graphics are heavily detailed and amazing the gameplay is more fluid...i like the weapons on requiem they way they float and meld together is amazing (though i hate the grenades i still prefer the ones the covenant used) the sound and music are great (but crotanas voice could be annoying) and the multiplayer is fantastic i enjoy that you could customize your spartan and the loadout the maps are great too....spartan ops is a new mode that i find intesting the missions could be played solo or co-operative and the episodes are really intriguing to watch sooo if your a fan of the master chief this game is for you 343 industries fills the shoes (might of replaced them with new ones) of the original makers bungie but instead of killing of faceless xbox mascot they redefined him this game is a must buy 9.5/10

I played through the campaign this week on Heroic. Thoroughly enjoyed the story and cutscenes, probably the best story of any Halo game so far. But I have to admit, the gameplay really started to bore me. It's just wave after wave after wave of enemies. You don't get that feeling of accomplishment when you clear an area because you've done it 100 times before. They need to do something for the next game to keep it from getting stale. Maybe weapon upgrades, weapon mods, XP, a currency system...I don't know, something.

Pretty weak score for such a hype game. Its just like COD, you know it will get at least a 9, and we all know they aren't good.

Halo 4 is the greatest game EVER. And I've played all the big titles across all the systems and NOTHING can even come close to this game. Period. The End. I don't care what the haters say about this game. Doesn't change my mind. Good God people, what more do you freaking want? The multiplayer is amazing and very in depth, the campaign is just about the most beautiful graphics EVER on a console....I don't get why people like to hate. God man, go play Mario or WOW and leave the GREATEST game ever to the people who know what they are talking about

I am only up to Forerunner so far, and have not touched multiplayer. I hate to say it, but I'm not having fun. I feel so empty playing it. New weapons are not great. Less weapon impact, sound effects lacking. This campaign better get better, and if the MP lives up to Reach, I will be satisfied.

Worst Halo ever made, massive disappointment. The very essence of Halo that makes it Halo has vanished! Da hell is up with the music? Sounds like your playing a SEGA game from 1993, at one stage they had an Egyptian theme song playing, where's the original opera sounding music? Da hell is up with the new appearance of the covenant, dark-shady purple colour with flashing fluro green lights; I enjoyed killing elites because of how they looked and sounded like, the different shiny armour colours that distinguishes their ranks, zealots etc.. Wheres the humor while accompanying UNSC soldiers, halo 2 & 3 had plenty of that which actually made me laugh, the auzzie accents, the African-american sergeant with the typical ghetto humor. Da hell is up with the game play, i gota go double check sometimes if the plasma grenade has actually exploded, wheres the original sound effects that precede its detonation; and whats with the new grenade? I've finished the campaign and I'm yet to discover the purpose of its existence.Halo 4 got famous because of its name, not game; and the poor masses follow into purchasing it like zombies, including me. I made an account on gamespot just to comment, that's how much I'm disappointed. I'm sure all these game reviewers got bribed to give it such a high score. 2.5/10. Bring Bungie back, 343 sucks; and I want my $100 back.

I'd rather have my wisdom teeth pulled than play an FPS on Xbox with a GAMEPAD.

So frustrating and awful. There is no substitute for mouse/keyboard.

so i finally got my hands on halo 4 and im very happy with the game but i've been looking at gamespots review and seriously they missed halve of the bad things in the game making the 9.0 score way to high i mean i love the game but i dont think it deserves better than an 8 or 8.5.

Like many people have experience in many situations either campaing or multiplayer, you are very constatly running out of ammo even after you defeat all the enemies and the screen clearly says look around the battle field for more weapons but wait this isnt possible when most of the times the weapons have despawnd.

no region or good connection filtering for online multiplayer? are you serious? this has to be the major problem here, if i play against someone whos laggin and i win i will be earning rank that i do not deserve, this needs to get fix ASAP.

well im not doing a review im just trying to figure out if gamespot and ign actually played through the game or what how could they missed this?

clearly not an accurate review, but still a good game dont get me wrong.

EA is destroying the video game industry. I sa this because they put their nose in everything. Star Wars, Bungie. Rehash after rehash of Sports games and Call of Duty.!!! They suck and now 343 has done it! Even though the people are part of Bungie, it doesnt feel like Halo, the orginal music etc!

WE NEED ORIGINAL STUFF. What ever happened to those Genesis/SNES days. Lots of original games and GOOD games. Dont get me wrong these games are ok but just the same ol same ol stuff. Gotta watch that stock and keep those investors happy..hehe that doesnt work either. They always lose money. AHhhhhhhhh Im done!

this game SUCKS. whoever's decision it was to move to this semi-cell-shaded bullshit look should swallow the barrel of a DMR. the graphics are shit, the AI is shit, and the whole thing resembles nothing more than a generic modern shooter. i had a suspicion that reach would be the last good halo title and i was right. i can't bitch enough about the graphics, take a look at any of the textures up close - garbage. i don't get it, how do you move backwards?

Damn, considering it's Halo I knew the comments would be full of hate but wow.

Whatever, I thought the campaign was hella fun and multiplayer is even better. What's funny is when a sequel comes out with lots of changes, people bitch about it being different. When a sequel comes out that improved on certain aspects but is largely similar to the previous entry, people bitch about it being the same. Why does every game have to be revolutionary??

Poor devs, they just can't win. Wish people would stop being so full of hate and learn to just relax and enjoy a good game.

Honestly I think reviewer scores are paid off a lot of times. How about marking this down because the game is similar to the last 3 of them? Same for call of duty

i dont have problems with the game cause i could just go and return it, my real problem is why gaming websites like GS IGN and many more are giving a score like this is the best game of the year or ever when its clearly not, and more questionable is why on there BAD comments they dont mention what really is bad like lack of ammo, game crashes etc.

I couldn't help walkig away feeling slightly dissapointed....sure it's a great game, it just lacked that certain something which I still can't quite put my finger on. Personally I feel that Reach was the best game in the series.

check out the oxm.co.uk review here http://www.oxm.co.uk/47230/reviews/halo-4-review/?page=3 they gave it a high score, but it's a long and thorough enough review that you know why it got that score, and I'm not impressed.

The story sucked, hands down.

Also, why is Cortana fat-faced and buck-toothed?

Campaign could be double the length.

Still, it's the best Halo since Halo:CE. Love the new weapons. Great level design.

Had a BLAST playing it.

Oh look, super hyped overrated game franchise receives blockbuster acclaim on a review website. Gosh GS, I'm sure glad you're an unbiased and totally honest critic of games. It's really apparent. I mean heck, Black Ops II got an 8.0 - clearly Call of Duty isn't an overhashed and stale game that's just repackaged once a year.

And people wonder why new games are so bland anymore...I don't...the proof is here.

Great game,, good combat, Interesting AI, enticing story, but it still lacks that halo 2/ Halo CE addictive feeling, But the forge mode is swaying off the right course, although they did add some more interesting tools, it could have been better, and the precision editing is gone, which negates a lot of creative things people can do. plus the file share system is still not up.

Shame on you G$, you bashed every other game and only held your good words and rate for the highest bider, your main sponsor, M$...

As expected, they would give maximum support for this game, althought it is a cheap rip off of ME3, with a story that goes far bellow AC3, graphic far inferior to Crysis 2,

MP animations that remind floating toons, L4D-like and yet, for the ultra-biased Watters this game has deliver its promise and only had a flush of positive icons to stamp on...

IMO, its not a bad game, but i have grown old enough to find it too cartoony.

The most dissapointing fact is that it is not the masterpiece of its generation, the previous one were.

Halo 2 will remain the best of the series for me, it was a top game, because it was superior to every other game of its generation.

It was the next step forward...

I made a comment 11 months ago about halo 4 and the halo franchise being done to death, i still think the games industry for these big titles still do and need to put effort into new games as they did at the start when they came up with the idea of these well known games Which wowed and amazed us all when we played the origionals and i want that feeling back. I wasnt sure how halo 4 would turn out and wasnt that exicited about it back then, im still not sure about it now but from what ive seen so far from reviews and game trailers i have been tempted to revisit the series and am going to get a copy at some point. I dont know if its the same old thing with a few changes or not until i do play it. I must say though 343 have pushed this gen xbox to a higher par in terms of graphics with this game from what i have seen though which is to be commended. And the game will last a lot longer before the next one comes out unlike COD franchise which i wont be buying into this time.

When halo first came out it was new and exciting when COD came out it was also new and exciting, when mass effect came out it was new and exciting, when resident evil came out it was new and exicing, same goes with GTA, Crackdown, Red Dead, Batman, Dead space, Bio shock, Battlefield, Devil may cry, Ninja Gaiden and a lot more. But the one thing all these great games have in common is after the first one is succesfull and become a hit, they remake them over and over again to cash in and dont have anything fresh new and inovative like when they origionaly came out and gave me that expeirence i so love about gaming.

I hate remakes now and would rather they put the profit they made from an instant classic into a new inovative intant classic and put the heart and sole into making a new game with the same devotion they did in the origionals they develop. Its the same with film franchises and the gaming industry is doing the same and the art of story telling is running thin because of it.

i can almost honestly say that review sites are getting paid... after that debacle of Max Payne giving that game a 9 when its clearly an 7.5 - 8 RE 6 a 4.5 when it's clearly a 7 - 7.5 and halo 4 a 9... how can you believe these guys?

the bottom line is people are getting smart.... they are getting gamefly and stuff and trying these "9.0 - 9.5" games out first.... all these review sites doing is hurting overall game sales and are cashing in on big sponsored titles for the companies paying them big bucks and the games that are better than those sponsored games they rate low so no one will buy them.. this is why overall game sales are down right now.

This game deserves an 7.5-8...and that's being generous for the disappointing feeling I was left with after finishing the campaign. Besides what we saw at E3, this game had nothing original on its predecessors that was worth remembering.

If you bought Halo solely for the campaign, then you need to re-evaluate your $60 purchases.

Meh 7/10, 343 have so far taken everything I enjoy about halo out of the game. Badass looking enemies, epic warthog driving finales, Big team objective playlists, multi-team, action sack, griffball, Bubble shields, Map quantity (Unlike Bungie <3, I don't think 343 will be giving out free maps), campaign freedom and the scoped weapons are too OP to name but a very few. The base game is fairly decent but without major updates I fear 343 have ruined halos reputation for being the best shooter ever made.

This is related to multiplayer - Recently I have been having trouble with my multiplayer progress, I am level 24, mid way through the first match I join after starting up the game I randomly lose all of my load outs, armour etc. Thankfully this doesn't wipe my progress altogether but it totally wrecks the experience and can only be solved by restarting the game, but then exactly the same thing happens when I join another game after having to reboot it, like a vicious circle. Can anyone help?

I played this game for an hour, what did I think?

Graphics: look allot better than Halo 3 and at times pretty awesome.

Story line:pretty obscure was not taken in by it

Gameplay: Same as Halo 1 (2001), although no flood (which is a good thing)

Originality: ummm same as Halo 1 (2001)

I tried to get into this but an hour is all I could do, it became a chore, a grind. They have not changed the mechanics and if anything made the game more linear. It was what I was doing 11 years ago only with prettier graphics.

Why did I endeavour may you ask? well I suffer from Nostalgia and Halo 1 was probably one of the best games I have played. There was a glimpse of awesomeness in Halo 1 when I played the Silent Cartographer level, it was there most open map even to date, I just which they grew in that direction instead the levels becoming more linear.

So I have handed the game back luckily I borrowed it off a mate and not bothered to a pay for it. Actually he wasn't that happy with it either.

Overall though the game should not be a 9. I just wish there was an un-biased review of it out there, lots of back handers I feel ;-)

PS: sorry guys but I only bas this comment on Campaign as I will not touch the multiplayer. But it probably excels there but not to award the thing a 9.

A lot of jaded responses about this game. However, this could be the best of the series. The multiplayer does a good job of feeling less gimmicky than Reach. Control the power weapons! Does what Halo does well without stupid %@*^ like Armor Lock or Bubble Shields.

I was disappointed with the fact that you need a gold account for online MP. But other then that it's a good game in the Halo series.

@ChaosUndivided

I think all multi-player games require an XBL Gold account.

This. All Multiplayer games need gold. Only one that didn't to my knowledge was FInal Fantasy XI, and that was because you had to pay a monthly fee to Square.

@ChaosUndivided at least they give you, crackle, ufc, youtube, nba tv, explorer and a host of other apps that kind of make xbox live worth while now.

if you only use xbox live for multi player then it kind of sucks....if you use all the features it's kind of worth while.

@chris_watters Hi. The way you describe Halo 4's single player, all apart from the story, makes me think of the original Unreal. That is not a bad thing in any way, in fact, its lacking in modern FPSs imo. How would you match them up?

@UltraHiDef

CoD Black Ops 2 is the same as the last Black Ops, CoDMW3, and CoDMW2is the same as the one before it CoDMW. Thanks for 343 Industries and Microsoft for innovating in Halo 4 and their efforts to make this a better game.

Where in COD "fun" can't be added in a patch. So no matter how many times they patch it, a bad game is a bad game.

Halo FTW!!

P.S. You could do this ^ with any game, both games suck, but CoD get the gold medal of crappiest games, why Activision bother with names?, they should call them Call of Duty 2011, 2012, 2013, same game with some updates and an interactive 3-4 hr movie, "innovating" lol.
