i can't stand it. the characters, the clothes, the locations, the voice-acting are all good. i just can't stand the battle system, but unfortunately that's 90% of the game. i get the idea, you wear them down with a smg and shoot them with a handgun to convert it to real damage, but it's not fun and it's way too hard, and a lot of times i feel like it lacks polish. i wish the core of the game were different, like if it played like mass effect 1 or something. mostly it's because every battle takes forever and is such a struggle, and i end up having to do the same one 3 or 4 times before i can actually win. the enemies shoot you on their turn without a chance for you to interrupt them, and on your turn they shoot you again and knock you out of your charge-up, it's completely unfair. it's not like i hate difficult games, i can speedrun dark souls in 4 hours. i just feel like there's no way to do it right. the issue is, i want to like the game, i've put in 18 hours, not counting when i've played a long time and just shut the system off because of shenanigans. i want to like it but i think i cant. can anyone give me general tips or tell me what could make it easier? you can't even pick a difficulty level on this piece of junk.

tl;dr - i hate this game but i want to like it, so any tips on what i can do to make it easier would be appreciated.

judging by the dead board and all the "how much more do i have to grind?" topics, i'm pretty worried it's just a bad game.

Hey supernightmaren. I'm surprised reading your post, as I would have expected you to enjoy this game, given your liking for RPGs with tanks and guns.

It sounds as if you haven't quite got the way the battle system works because a hero run or tri-attack will make your characters invincible to attack. Also you can see who the enemies are targetting and stop that before it happens. However, it took me quite a while to grasp and many people take about 4 or 5 chapters before the whole thing clicks into place. You need to customise your weapons, change them around to level up your characters, and make good use of terminals as you go further into the game.

Anyway, you may already know all of that if you've played for that long. But I'll help in any way I can.

long time no see! yeah i'm on chapter 5 and i stuck as much stuff as i can onto each gun and i rotate who has the smg and grenade box to round out my character levels but it doesn't seem like enough, every fight is still crazy hard. i do hero actions as often as i can, but next turn i get hit and lose 3 bezel shards and go into wuss mode. i'm starting to think the issue is that i don't have enough bezels (i have 4 full ones), but i've spent every energy hex i have uncovering spaces for items and haven't found many. i've done some red hex challenges but i get squashed like a bug in random encounters, so those are basically impossible and you can't back of out them either. this game is hard but it's more clunky than anything. i might just end up getting rid of it if i don't have some kind of breakthrough soon

Yeah, it sounds like you just haven't quite figured out the battle system. It is pretty poorly designed and thought out. There's, more or less, one right way to play. Once you get it, all you ever do is go through the same motions over and over and OVER. Other than the difficulty curve in learning how to play, the game actually has practically no challenge and gets incredibly repetitive and boring.

What you basically want to do is start with a hero action with the machine gun holder (preferably with the character as the lead so you can immediately get a resonance point without having to move at all), charge up fully as you move across (I almost always jump so as not to ram into anything), and let the enemy have it. Then do another hero action with a handgun user (crossing between the other two characters and getting another resonance point), only charge once to claim all the machine gun damage, then charge as many times as you can for the duration of the run in order to increase your odds of breaking the gauges and stunning the enemies. That's basically it. Just tweak it as necessary, and use special ammo, grenades, and tri-attacks whenever you feel appropriate.

I don't know if it'll make you like the game, though. I'm a huge tri-Ace fan, and even though a couple of their more recent games let me down, I held decent hopes for this game since I heard a fair amount of praise. But as I got farther and farther, I couldn't deny the reality that I had more against it than for it. It's not tri-Ace's worst game, but I'd only rank Infinite Undiscovery and Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume below it (and I'm iffy on if Resonance of Fate is better than Covenant of the Plume). The battle system seems overwhelming at first since it's taught to the player so poorly but is actually really shallow and dull, the story goes absolutely nowhere, the comedy is pathetic, groan-worthy weeaboo humor, the characters are pretty meh (probably because they barely get developed), the graphics are bland and colorless, the music is equally bland and unmemorable, the pacing is snail slow with the game being overbloated with redundant busywork, so... yeah, I don't think especially highly of Resonance of Fate. It's a real shame because I was really hoping for something both innovative and fun.

i think i might be blinded by the clothes aspect of it. i almost wont play a newer game if you cant change clothes in it and this game is like my dream in that regard. but yeah, it's not that the combat is too weird to understand, it's boring and just a generally bad system in my opinion. it does seem to be inflexible and repetitive like you were saying. i kept playing in the hopes i'd reach that "aha" moment where you realize what you were doing wrong the whole time and the game takes a completely different turn from then on, but i'm worried i might never have that epiphany. i got this game last year, put 15 hours on it and put it down until a couple days ago, and 5 more hours later i'm about to put it down again. the only tri-ace games i've liked were the second star ocean and radiata stories, so i'm not surprised i dont like this.

but yeah, like you said, i start off with whomever has the smg and do a hero action, jumping right over the enemy to get the most charges from being so close. then i have a handgun person jump over them and convert the scratch damage, rinse and repeat. i dont know what i could be doing wrong other than not making use of the stations, which is the next thing i'll try now that i know about it.

Tri-attacks are incredibly helpful too. And grenades for stunning enemies and causing various status effects.

But honestly I was close to tears so many times in the early chapters, they seemed just terribly hard to me: especially that escort mission and had to try it a number of times before nailing it. After that was when things started to change and I began to be able to plan my assaults better, and target enemies with more care. I liked the characters so much, the hex system, the music and the sheer originality of the game ( and the dressing up too!) that I was determined to persevere and in the end it paid off. I do hope you manage it!

I wish there was more to the hex system. I probably had more fun fiddling with those pieces than most everything else. I like the instant gratification of discovering lots of hidden items. If only the rest of the game could maintain a steady feeling of satisfaction. The whole "work" vs. reward balance is all off.

I like the clothes too. Being able to regularly change how the characters looked was about the only thing that broke up the monotony.

yeah, it's getting there. i'm still not really having fun with it, but i'm not about to pull my hair out like the other day. i think the biggest thing was doing all the side stuff, they trick you into thinking it's optional but if you dont do it, you're horrifically under-leveled and under-equipped. it's like if in pokemon you had to worry about effort values before challenging brock, if anyone gets that comparison.

Yes, you should do all the missions, mainly for the rewards and the extra levels you'll gain, as well as keeping up with the arena to open the next ranks. That will also give you item drops which you need to make new gun parts and grenades. Once you reach the higher chapters you could pick and choose a bit more.

Check my FAQ to see the rewards for missions if there are some you want to skip. (Assuming you're not going for the platinum trophy! )
Also you'll find a list of guns and bezel shards' locations to make sure you find them all as early as you can.

All these things will help. Good luck with it.

it's going easier now. it was a combination of not having enough bezel and not having customized enough, plus the 10% and 20% damage reductions accessories are incredibly helpful. i guess the issue was that i was doing like 75% of all the extra stuff, when you really have to be doing every last possible little thing available just to survive. i think the early game is just horrifically unbalanced though, because it's become exponentially easier.

still not having fun though lol

have you tried using hero motion but not jumping you can often get your foe in the air and get multiple hits and when hes in the air u can jump and smack down.also when using hero dash jump and fully charge to get gauge break so you dont get hit and if you only have 1 bezel left just move and attack get close and be prepared to heal scratch damage.you can also hone your skills in the arena.best bet is to double up on guns so you have 2 of each.

All I did was smg run-shoot-jump-shoot, finish off with pistol, second smg run-shoot-jump-shoot.

I died a little, but for the most part, I didn't find the game to be too hard, though it was refreshingly challenging, and I never did tri-attacks. The most trouble I had with the game was escorting the statue of Leanne.

Though near the end of the game, I did start to get a little tired of always fighting the same way, but trying anything else ended up not working so well.
