At the time of this game's release, many a gamer was jaded towards a genuine spooky title that could fill the shoes of the excellent, "Alone in the Dark" series. Coming from Capcom, the creators of the Street Fighter series, this didnt raise the hope of many gamers. Not known for creating horror, action-adventure games, they also made the (at the time) unusual decision to release this on the Playstation, the recently released cd based console. And then it came out and exceeded many people's low expectations. Expecting a cheap knock off of "Alone in the Dark", many people were genuinely surprised at this games ingenius. Focusing on a single location in the game, the creators were able to fill it with some genuine scares and shocks. You never knew what the game was about to throw at you. A very adult game, gore and blood features prominantly. This is not a game for children, as the tension and atmosphere of this title may just give them nightmares. The story is based around the Mansion that you and you're strike team are investigating after reports of some "unusual deaths" where victims were apparently eaten. The game consists mainly as you, the player, on getting out of the Mansion. Using your resources, and problem solving skills, you will have to do just that. The Mansion is full of Zombies, and other assorted creatures who will attempt to attack you. Fortunately, they didnt send you in unarmed, and there is a multitude of weapons and ammo scattered around the Mansion. Solving puzzles will give you access to new areas, and will also guide you through the stories many twists and turns. Unfortuantely though, voice acting has been left as the last thing to consider and the game feels second rate because of it. While the game feels cinematic, with a Hitchcok twist (static angles on the rooms, with polygonal characters and pre-drawn environments), the cinematic scenes feel much less so. The interactions between yourself and the other characters you find throughout the game feel very forced, there is no subtlety between them and the dialogue is phony and cheap. A shame, as some more work on this could have really blurred the lines between game and movie. The graphics are suitably good, with well drawn characters, however, they move awkardly. There is no quick turn in this game, you will have to manually stand still and rotate your character. The backgrounds are well drawn and varied, and the monsters you face are chilling and menacing. Other than the spoken dialogue, the sound is suitably good, although typical. There are some points where it picks up though, but for the most part, you wont think much of it. This most likely works to the games advantage, and instead makes you focus more on the task at hand. Overall, a new type of adventure has been born from this game, and there will definately be some fans. If not for the small flaws, this game could be considered a masterpiece. However, if you are a fan of b - movie horror, than you are in for a treat here. Recomeded thrills.
