Average to Good Game, Not So Ok By Resident Evil Standards!!!

User Rating: 7.5 | BioHazard: Gun Survivor (CapKore) PS
Concept: Before I begin the review let me advise you that I am a huge Resident Evil fan so I may have been a bit lighthearted on this game. If you are not a RE fan, do 7.5-2.0 and 5.5 is probably the real score this game deserves. We all know the disaster in the Raccoon City that was done by Umbrella ( if you don't, read my RE 2 and 3 reviews). That was the price Raccoon City had to pay for Umbrellas research on the T-virus. Many people may not know that an Island , Sheena island may become another victim of Umbrella. Ark Thompson, friend of Leon Scott Kennedy from RE 2 and 4, was a special agent or a policeman ( I can't remember) that went to the island to investigate Umbrella. Leon is the one who asked him to investigate the island. As a man ( spoiler content, can't tell you his name) tries to escape the island on a helicopter. Ark happens to catch the helicopter and hangs on to it. The helicopter then crashes and a single survivor ( Ark) tries to escape the explosion but is knocked unconscious. He then later awakes from the wreckage and comes to his senses. But he is suffering from amnesia as he wonders how much time has passed, who is he, and where he is. Hearing moans and echoes in the distance of the city and not knowing what's going on, Ark realizes that the gun in his hand is his only hope for survival. Thus the adventure begins.

Game play: This is a first person shooter type of Resident Evil game. There is no point in this RE game where you have to play in third person view. So could someone tell me why did Capcom make the controls as if this were a third person game. To run, you have to press square and the arrow buttons or the left analog stick in any direction. For most fps type games you have to move the analog sticks or the arrow buttons to move or run. You can't change weapons on the fly like in most fps games, instead you have to press start to access your item menu (or the right analog stick), and then you select the weapon you want. You have to hold down R1 and press x or triangle to shoot your weapon, which is a reasonable control. L1 is used when R1 is held down to change the enemy your aiming at. x and triangle is also used to pick up items, open doors, and so on. Both buttons basically function as the action buttons. Only one part of the controls are decent for an fps game which is the way to shoot. Every other function in the controls don't fit an fps shooter. This is the first time I have dogged Capcom but these are the worst controls they have developed for a RE game simply because they tried to make an fps RE game but the controls don't match an fps game. Can't blame them for trying though. This is the part I usually say good job Capcom, but this time I'm saying, not so good of a job Capcom!

Graphics: The graphics were awesome, when they were in RE2. This game was released 2 years later than RE2 so the graphics are a little bit older know, especially seeing RE3. RE2's graphics were basically ported to this game with mixed results. For a RE game or just a game in general, the graphics are so so. You can see a fair amount of detail on the monsters and the other characters as well. You can tell that zombies are zombies, and the other monsters look fairly scary as well. The characters are fairly detailed as well. But the graphics in this game are barely decent and luckily, they aren't bad enough for you to turn off the television. Once again, I usually say good job, but the graphics are not so good.

Sound: Again they basically ported most of
the zombie sounds as well as some of the other monster sounds to RE Survivor with mixed results. They sound scary but again barely so. The characters voice acting are horrible. It reminds me of the first RE for playstation. The voice actors make it sound as if they are reading directly from a script. Not only that, they also sound like they can't read very good and are still taking their reading lessons. If your new to horror games, you may be scared by th e monsters sounds but, if you have played a horror game before, you won't be scared at all. Once again, not such a good job Capcom.

Replay Value: Decent replay value. There are 2 difficulty settings to play and on normal, you can unlock a secret weapon. I guess one other replay value asset, is the alternate paths you can take in the game. Doing that can help you discover all of the files in the game, and you can also complete your gun collection as there are many handguns in the game.

Entertainment: At least there are no puzzles to slow the action down. So the entertainment is ok I guess. In almost every room there is a monster to kill. Not to mention the many Mr. X's that are around the place. To those of you who don't know, Mr. X is sort of a super zombie like monster. He is stronger than most of the average monsters in the game. This monster is created on Sheena island you see so there is almost an infinite supply of this monster so watch out.

Overall: This was Capcoms first try so I gave them some slack and besides, I am a huge fan of Resident Evil so I'm not gonna let this game faze the love I have for the franchise. This first try was bad but if you don't succeed, then try and try again. I wouldn't recommend this game to non-RE fans but if your interested give it a try. It couldn't hurt especially since it's so cheap now. As for RE fans, if you plan on collecting the entire series like I have done (including the side scrollers), then you really don't have a choice. But even if your not planning on collecting every RE game, give it a shot I mean after all, it's RE. Don't forget that it's a classic and even classics deserve some attention.
