Good game that grows on you.

I had tried this game once way back in the day when I had a PSX. I played it for about 5 minutes and decided I didn't really like it. Then, recently, as a graduation gift from university, I received a $25 gift card to Best Buy, saw Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil for $30 on Wii, saw a good review of it on IGN, and so I figured I'd get it. Once I spent time with it and learned my way around, I found that it's a good, challenging game. I'll be reviewing it from the perspective of a person having played it for the first time and as if it's not an old game.

Graphics: 10/10 The prerendered graphics are full of detail and work well with the sound to create a good atmosphere. The animations are solid and well detailed. Although prerendering is an old style of graphic design, it's a nice change of pace from full 3-D environments.

Sound: 10/10 The sound is wonderfully atmospheric, creating a highly eerie setting that makes you jump at unexpected sounds. The voiceover is good, as well.

Control: 6/10 This is one of the few major problems with this game. The controls are difficult to get used to; they use a setup from the perspective of the character onscreen-- even if your character is facing you, you press up on the control stick to walk forward. I wouldv'e preferred a setup where you moved in whatever direction you pushed the control stick in, regardless of your character's orientation. Also, there's no diagonal movement. You must turn your character in the direction you want to go. I assume this is the setup of the original game; if so, I would've liked to have seen it revamped for the Wii, or at least included as an option.

Gameplay: 9/10 A wonderful atmosphere in which to play. It's practically a horror movie that you play. My only gripe is the saving system. You're required to find Ink Ribbons and save your game at typewriters. This system of rationing saves is a bit difficult to live with. The game is challenging, with enemies that cannot die and great puzzles.

Overall, it's a good investment, especially if you've never played before.
