User Rating: 8.9 | BioHazard Outbreak (PlayStation 2 the Best) PS2
Without question, Resident Evil Outbreak needs to be judged as a cooperative multiplayer online game. The game was originally called "Resident Evil Online", and that is still the most oppropriate title. With that in mind, I must say that this game is truly outstanding when appropriate accomidations are made. By far, the biggest complaint is the lack of built-in voice support which prevents you from talking directly to your teammates. However, let me tell you how to get around that problem... Round up as many friends as you can to play the game with you. Each player will need a PC running a good voice program (such as Teamspeak or Ventrilo). Then make sure your headset cable is long enough to make it to your PS2 area from the PC. If it isn't, all you need is an extention, or even a wireless headset could do the trick. When you and your friends are equiped in this fashion, you can meet online for a highly cooperative round of survival horror, with FULL VOICE SUPPOT! I have been playing with two friends of mine, all of us on voice, and it has been a blast. We were able to make strategies; we coordinate the gathering of items, and the securing of areas. The strategic and cooperative factor works incredibly well once your team is on voice! The graphics in this game are quite amazing. I would say it is very comparable to the level of graphical quality seen in the games "Resident Evil", and "Resident Evil Zero" for the Gamecube. Only this game is a notch cooler because everything is rendered in real time allowing camera movement in the scenes. Just for comparison, today I loaded up "Resident Evil: Code Veronica" (which also has camera movement), and noticed how primitive that game looks now. No comparison, Outbreak is substantially improved. Now I'll address the second major complaint: slow load times! This is probably due to the greatly improved graphics (more detail to load between areas). I must say, the loading delays are a bit much with this game. However, there is a remedy for this problem if you have the means to get the Sony Hard Drive (it comes with Final Fantasy XI). I bought it, and found it makes a big difference. The areas now load two to three times as fast, making the delay very tolerable, and no longer a destraction to gameplay. One thing to keep in mind though, if you play online, you only benefit from the hard drive, if everyone you play with has one as well. If even one person on the team doesn't have it, the entire team is forced to play off the DVD even if they have the drive. This limitation is probably because of how the game is programmed and it needs everyone to be playing the same way. Right now, I have the drive, one of friends has it, and my third friend will be getting it soon so we can all play using the drive. The drive definately helps you in offline mode, because there is no need to be synced with other players. Overall, Resident Evil Outbreak is an incredible game if you can work around the problems that it has. This game is a truly unique experience. In no other online game lets you team up with friends in the adventure/survival horror genre!
