Well, on the one hand Resident Evil suffers from having no real story, repetitive dialogue, and a few other minor issues. However, on the other hand the scenario-based system by which the game progresses ends up working as a surprisingly effective alternative. By placing you in various situations of survival, there is more of a feeling of being just a normal person surviving a zombie attack that the other games never had. It's like being in the movie, Dawn of the Dead, as you are just an average citizen trying to survive. The controls are as good as Resident Evil controls have ever been, and you can decided if that's a good thing on your own. The graphics are some of the best I've seen on PS2, and it's fun seeing graphical updates to a few old locales from the earlier games that weren't remade, like Resident Evil 2's underground facility. The music is perfect, just like every Resident Evil game before it. Very eerie and moody stuff. The sound effects add to the atmosphere too, and are really good. The only thing that drags the sound down is the horribly repetitive lines from your partners, especially in Offline mode. If I have to hear that Jim guy say "My life is s**t!" one more time, I'm going to punch my PS2, perhaps breaking my hand in the process, and suing Capcom for causing it. All in all a good value, though some who may miss the storylines of earlier RE games may want to wait for a price drop and/or addition to the Greatest Hits collection.
