Capcom Draws Even

User Rating: 8.5 | Resident Evil 5 X360
With the bar set so high in 2005 with Resident Evil 4 I was curious how would Capcom be able to bring something new to a new generation of console and still make it as amazing as their previous installment.

The answer is, they didn't do too bad. I actually never played a Resident Evil game before Resident Evil 4 so I apparently missed out on all the horror the series had to offer, oh well. No Resident Evil 5 isn't a horror game and has taken more of a turn towards the action genre. Not necessarily an awful thing, the story is still immersive, the controls are still sharp and the characters are still fantastic.

The series has moved from Spain to Africa and puts the player in the perspective of Chris Redfield a BSAA Agent and returning protagonist in the series. He has been sent to investigate a possible threat in the area and has been given a guide to the area named Sheva Alomar. Sheva might be the most useful tag-along in a game to date, she has a tendency to abuse her pistol ammo but other than that, she's an accurate shot and helps keep Chris out of trouble when he's over his head. You can also bring in a second player to take over Sheva which will put the AI issues aside.

The story plays out similar to Resident Evil 4 with another form of Plagas taking over the world with a villain who wants to spearhead the operation. Some say its predictable but I say if its not broken don't try and fix it. Of course there are a few twists here and there to keep everything feeling fresh and keeping the players on their toes but it essentially the same background of its legendary predecessor.

Considering this was the first Resident Evil game put on this generation of consoles I think Capcom did a great job of keeping everything simple and familiar for past players and accessible enough for new players to pick up and master very quickly. However, the game does not feel as frantic as Resident Evil 4 due to the amount of ammo that is scattered and is dropped by enemies makes everything a little bit easier.

Regardless this game is a must buy for fans of the series and action game junkies alike
