It all sounds amazing and I'm really looking forward to it. And yo Bmunnn you sound like a backpacker. Games change over time. I understand your frustation as an old R6 Roque Spear player. I did not own the first couple of games cause I owned an N64 with GoldenEye (best game ever), but I played trough it. I also played 4 on the Wii and I have to say thayt they could have put in more puzzles, but you got to be honest that it was and is a great game. Only not the way you would have like it to be.
Capcom shows off the anticipated survival horror game.
Capcom held an event this week to show off Resident Evil 5, the latest entry in the reborn survival horror franchise. Two areas inside the game were showcased, the first being the same basic demo we've seen over the past few months, which has morphed into the upcoming public demo. On the other hand, the second area featured never-before-seen areas and gameplay that hinted at what else the game is going to offer. More importantly, the new areas gave us a glimpse of cinematic sequences that offered some bits of information on the storyline. Given that we're gluttons for punishment and curious about the story, we dove right in to face any number of deaths in the promising game.
We started out with the boss-fight level taken from the game's second chapter, which pit lead character Chris Redfield and his partner Sheva against a mutated creature that was a cross between a bat and a scorpion. The battle took place in a rocky canyon that afforded some room to maneuver, and by "maneuver" we mean "run for our lives." Escape seemed to be the name of the game in the fight, given that Mr. Scorpion-Bat Hybrid is nimble and not entirely pleasant. The biggest issues to be dealt with are ground and air attacks because the critter likes to mix things up. We're at least grateful that it wasn't burrowing under the ground, which would have made things even trickier. Even so, the battle was fairly painful and lengthy, despite the fact that infinite-ammo cheats had been enabled. Thankfully, as with most things RE, a little patience and several million bullets usually do the trick. We're pretty sure there's a smarter way to kill the thing more quickly, hopefully using Sheva in some way. Although we're not knocking our helpful, life-restoring buddy, we will say that it would have been nice if she had done a bit more and gotten out from underfoot. Once the creature was killed, we were treated to a cinematic that gave an annoyingly simplified, albeit cool, impression of the fight. We would have liked to just take the thing out with one well-aimed pistol shot as Chris does in the cinematic, but that's not quite how things played out in the fight.
After that battle, we were able to check out part of a cinematic that segued into a battle with motorcycle-mounted majini (who aren't letting their virally infected state block them from enjoying all available options for chasing down Chris and Sheva) that had Chris manning a gun on the back of a moving jeep. Unfortunately, we got only a taste of that level before we had to jump to the next playable area from the game's second chapter. That level finds Chris and Sheva hot on the trail of the mysterious man named Irving. The search leads the duo to an area that's equal parts refinery and chemical plant, which, unsurprisingly, is crawling with majini. Although the stage featured the expected quota of shooting, dismemberment, and melee action, there was also some traditional RE puzzle-solving. Your path through the first part of the area is set outdoors and blocked by jets of flame, locked doors, and other obstacles, requiring you to hit switches and use zip lines to access different areas. Besides the puzzle elements and mobs of majini, we got to deal with several of what is currently in the running for most-hated enemy in RE5, the burlap-hooded chainsaw maniac. The tenacious foe requires multiple shots to the head, which can get dicey when he's advancing on you.
Once you make it past all of that, you'll meet up with Josh, one of the remaining survivors from a STARS team that's been thinned out after an encounter with majini. From a story standpoint, there seems to be some tension between Josh and Chris; Josh doesn't seem to be a fan of Chris' approach to recent events. Over the course of an intense conversation between the two, it's revealed that one of the reasons Chris is so driven to make his way through all the madness is to find a friend. Josh, on the other hand, is more than ready to get out of town. In any case, everyone's stuck with each other, and your group gains an additional member for the remainder of the level. This latter part of the level is set indoors, adding a claustrophobic vibe to the action, and has you working your way through building interiors, in some cases covering your party members as they hack a computer and open up a new path. The second part of the level does a good job of building dread, considering that you're not always able to see exactly what's coming due to the cramped quarters, although you can hear them good enough. This leads to some nice, albeit irritating moments when you hear and then see flashes of Mr. Chainsaw dutifully making his way to your group.
The game plays much the same as it has the last few times we've tried it. If you're familiar with the handling of the GameCube version of RE4 then you should be right at home with RE5. Using Sheva effectively takes some getting used to, considering that she can be quite effective but does require some directing on your part. She can also be a liability because you basically have to drop everything and go help her when she's in trouble, seeing as how you'll fail the mission if she dies. As far as looks go, RE5 is shaping up nicely on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Overall, we like what we see and anxiously await the game's March 13th release. Look for more on the game in the coming months, and keep an eye out for the playable demo due out early next year.
It's good to see that someone else gets what I'm saying. I know this game will rape harder than almost any game out today but it's not a true RE survival horror experience. It seems that these new action whore RE fans can't grasp that. They are all incredibly belligerant and simple minded. They're like," Omgosh!!1!11one!! somebody doesn't like the new RE's!! What a Newb!!!! Rabble rabble rabble!!!"
I've been a RE fan ever since the very first one came out for PS One. Im going back well over ten years. That was the first time a game of its kind was ever released. I was instantly hooked. Part 2, 3, and code veronica were also amazing!!! When RE 4 came out, I must say, I was extremely dissapointed. Granted, it was an enjoyable game, but the theme and gameplay had totally changed. I didnt like that the camera was directly behind the character, no scary music, very little puzzles, etc... RE 5 is exactly the same as that. RE 4 and 5 are run and gun action games. NOt survival horror like the original were. Dont get me wrong, this will be a very good game, and I will be picking it up, but I know its not going to be as fun as the first few
I don't know why you guys keep saying stuff like this isn't Resident Evil etc. First thing first, if you like the older games, keep playing, no one is telling you not to, also don't try to say bad thing about this game anymore. Second, each series that has more than 4 or 5 game with the same way of gameplay(for RE, nearly every game has indetical gameplay except some rail shooter games which I didn't play) need a change of gameplay. For RE, the change was right:right time and right way. Would you prefer a change like SH5 did? Of course not. Third, to all guy that said this game is a RE4.5, yes maybe but let see 0 and 1, aren't they has the same kind of gameplay, and the amostphere, now we move onto 1 and 2, split stories. So now we could call 1 as 0.5 and 2 as 0.75 right. I can only think of that and sorry if my English are bad, it's not my mother tongue
Resident Evil always was the last word on action-terror games,so we shouldn't expect less from this game.and other thing thath every1 like is:BLOW SOME ZOMBIE HEADS.
"DONT CHANGE WHAT ISNT BROKEN" well known proverb and very very true.... Resident Evil became the cult icon it was BECAUSE of the format it had... thats the reason I fell for it..it scared the pants off me the first time I played it. I loved the zombies and the puzzles and not knowing what was gonna happen next. Tremendously scary if played at night in a dark room on your own..brrrrrr...loved it... they might pick up new fans by changing the format..but at the same time they risk losing the avid followers of the old format and that is what made it popular in the first place. Could NEVER get boring and repetitive...bring back the old format pleeeeeease
RE 4 EVA the last one(4) was awsome, took me a year to beat! It killed my math scores in algebra one but it was worth it.
Moon015 you need to either get your facts straight or learn how to read. I've already said that RE4 was a great game and that RE5 is going to be far better than RE4 ever thought of being. I have never said that the plots were bad because they weren't. They were very good. The plot to RE4 started out a little cliche but ended up being good. All I was saying was that the games were great the way they were. I know Capcom needed and wanted to get new fans but they could have done that without selling out and turning Resident Evil into just another action game with a million quick time events. I am still a devoted fan as I have already owned the demo for a month and it hasn't been released in the United States yet. I also plan on buying this game the day it comes out but, to me and many others this is not a Resident Evil.
I'm beginning to enjoy resident evil since RE4. The earlier games were okay, but not as great as people seem to make them out to be. sure , the atmosphere was great, but the tank like controls, fixed camera views, bad voice acting & silly puzzles, not so much.
okay for rockandrolls and Bmunns information I have been a fan of the series since the beggining and own every game and i happen to beleive that the series was due for a change and RE4 did that and firmly beleive even though the old games were amazing that the new plots are equally as good and this is a real resident evil game and if capcom did not do this they would not attract any new fans RE4 was flawless and i beleive this will be too
glwarrior Posted Jan 11, 2009 6:24 am GMT "everyone who says re is dead was never a real fan they are just stupid dicks im glad they changed it if not it would have gotten repetitive and boring" I'm going to go ahead and say that you couldn't be more wrong. I believe the people that think it would have gotten "repetitive and boring" are the faux fans. I have never thought for a second that the franchise would have become boring so the fact that you do makes you seem like you're full of crap. Like I said before I have been a HUGE! Resident Evil fan since the first game and still am. I have a huge collection of Resident Evil stuff and probably know more about the franchise than most people so please don't tell me I'm not a true fan when you have no idea what you're talking about. Secondly, it seems some people are misunderstanding what I'm saying. I never said anything about Resident Evil 5 being a bad game. In fact I've played the demo and have said before that it is undeniably going to be a great game as was Resident Evil 4 however; just because they bring back a few main characters doesn't mean it's automatically a Resident Evil. It is not and never will be because the principles that made the series what it is have long since been removed. So albeit an incredibly addicting, intense, action filled, survivor horror experience it's not the Resident Evil experience...
It's not a resident evil game, resident evil 5 will be a good game, but not a resident evil game. I'm a huge fan of the actual resident evil game. But this is not a resident evil game.
everyone who says re is dead was never a real fan they are just stupid dicks im glad they changed it if not it would have gotten repetitive and boring oh my god another zombie slowly shuffling towards me or holy sh*t its me versus 50 intelligent lifelike enemys you decide
RE4 is by no stretch of the imagination a resident evil game, rescuing the president daughter........WTF, there wasn't any zombies for gods sake, people controlled by parasites......????, if thats anything to go by for RE5 then it looks to be a pieece of garbage. Zombies riding motorbikes is ludacris, Give me the originals any day! RE5 may be a good game, but it's not a resident evil game.
They had to evolve and come up with a new story mode because the old one was becoming so repetitive. But i admit that once this new story mode becomes old, they will have a hard time coming up with something original. But that will be in a while ,i think.
i don't care what people say, this game looks great! so what if the cameras changed, there are no more zombies, it's still Umbrella we all know and hate, it may be the final round between Wesker and Chris! hopefully though, that bastard pops up like a stubborn boil. but anyway, RE5 is going to be great, if you people have a problem with it, get a job working at Capcom and tell them they're doing it all wrong! other than that, expect this game to come out and rock your world for good or not. :P
Resident Evil 4 was not even close to the best, not by any means. True that the infected in RE4 were "more evolved" but it was not a virus at all. it was a parasite. Any fan of survival horror and the old Resident Evils loved the game for what it was. I didn't care about the controls because they got better with each game. Resident Evil wasn't an action game until Resident Evil 3. It was a survival horror game and was an adventure game. Those fans of the new Resident Evils are nothing but action whores who love any and all games that have retarded amounts of action. I know just about everything there is to know about the series. I own almost everything from games, movies, soundtracks, books, guides, you name it. It's just not the same no matter how many characters they bring back. Capcom has just lost sight of the fundamentals of RE.
I see this series dying...Resident Evil used to have a mystery around this game..this haunting aura and I see that aura slowly fading. This game is legendary for its surprises and plot. Umbrella Corp has become a real commodity in the gaming world and everyone knows about it even the non-horror game players. Recently, this game has been losing it's light and it started with Resident Evil 4. I know I'm at the bottom of this because most people loved RE4. But capcom itself has forgotten why Resident Evil became famous to begin with. And that's because Resident Evil wasn't your conventional horror shooter, it was different; the camera angles, the horrific sounds, and footsteps and mainly the mystery of not knowing what's around the corner. I hope Capcom realizes this and goes back to its old style. And please no more merchants, in the real world you don't go through a door and a guy is standing there with infinite amounts of ammo and weapons to sell to youl.
Bmunnn "Resident Evil is dead because the things that made it resident Evil are long gone. No more Umbrella, zombies, tyrants, etc... I have played the resident evil 5 demo and the game is undeniably good but that doens't make it a Resident Evil. I know you wouldn't understand because you have probably only been a fan of the series since Resident Evil 4 but trust me these games are not part of the true series by any means." ________________________________________________ I disagree there. Resident Evil was all about Ubrella's viruses. They made viruses which turnwed people in gibbering zombies, with the application of said virus being a weapon. Zombies are great for making a general mess of things, same with the tyrant, but the Ganados from RE4 are infected with a more evolved version of the virus and one could easily argue that they are significantly more mentally active than zombies, thus more useful, ie better weapons. The concept is still the same. I would argue that RE4 is the best modern revival of a series that, while still fun in RE 0 and RE-X, did need a change, and this is coming from a huge fan of all the early games and their respective remakes. The change of pace makes it less horror and more action, but I still felt it was Resident Evil under the skin.
What are some of you thinking RE4 was and is the best!!Sick controls not those boggy old school controls.. The older games were scarrier because you could barely move and it was harder to get out of situations.. Capcom did the right thing by changing the controls.. Thank YOu Capcom BTW the game looks awesome!!!!
I don't know about that. I bought a gamecube specifically because of the remakes. I think they would have sold just fine if they weren't gamecube exclusives. I mean I still beat all the old games once a year usually. Hell, I would stuill buy new RE's if they had ps1 graphics if they would go back to the way they used to be. I miss those games.
RockandRoll4li: If they kept the series the same it wouldn't sell much. While I do miss the Horror aspect of RE you must appreciate why a change was needed.
Thank you Capcom for completely killing the splendour and genius that the original RE captured. Zombies with chainsaws (if you can call them zombies) doesn't make any sense. RE4 was a terrible game. They should have kept what made the originals terrific. RE5 LOOKS HORRENDOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This game looks amazing, can't wait! REserved PS3 Special Edition! ___________________________________________________ "djmillard2 the ps1 RE was the best. in that mansion. lol when those dog things came i was like "HOLY (BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP)!" " You're so right, I love that freaking game! ___________________________________________________ "EFICARTEL i totally agree with djmillard2.. the 1st RE was the best.. they should remake 1st RE game for next gen console..." They already did that...unless you don't count the GameCube remakes of 1 and 2....and that probably means if they do it for PS3 and 360, then when the PS4 and whatever the next XBOX is gonna be called comes out you're gonna disregard THOSE remakes, too and demand Capcom remakes them AGAIN for the new consoles....it's gonna be a never ending cycle, and I say just get a GameCube!
i totally agree with djmillard2.. the 1st RE was the best.. they should remake 1st RE game for next gen console...
the ps1 RE was the best. in that mansion. lol when those dog things came i was like "HOLY (BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP)!"
I know it doesn't feel like the originals, but it is still an exciting survival/horror game that I will buy when released. I buy games because of how addicting they can get and how many hours I spend playing them. Wesker will eventually get what's coming to him.
u right bmunn the zombies in re4 and 5 the zombies uze chainsaws knifes n all kind of stuff n theres no real storie to it like the old 1s umbrella corporations and everithingAND MOST IMPORTANT PROPER ZOMBIES
I know what u mean Bmunnn. I am fan from Resident Evil 1 and they changed a lot.. The puzzles and zombies was the best in this game and when I played the RE4 i can say it's very very good game but it's not like I expected. I think RE5 will be also awesome game but I would like to see more from RE1, 2 or 3...
Yes it takes too long to make a new game from fresh so they re-use a lot of the sounds, code, enemies etc. RE5 will not look very fresh, a lot of content will be resused from RE4
Resident Evil is dead because the things that made it resident Evil are long gone. No more Umbrella, zombies, tyrants, etc... I have played the resident evil 5 demo and the game is undeniably good but that doens't make it a Resident Evil. I know you wouldn't understand because you have probably only been a fan of the series since Resident Evil 4 but trust me these games are not part of the true series by any means. My only other gripe about this game is that it uses all the same sounds, death animations, etc of Resident evil 4. Rather than feeling like i was playing a new game I felt like I was playing Resident Evil 4.5.
i don't know what to say to capcom every series of RE is awesome , i can't wait to march!!!!!!!!!!! i want to play now!!!!!!!!!!!!
This game looks really good and like it will make RE4 look like nothing but, it's still not a resident evil to me. No matter how many characters they decide to bring back Resident Evil is dead... Resident Evil 1996-2002 Rest In Peace
Cant Wait. Anyone else Afraid of the Chainsawing guys cause there insta Kills. I hate em and personally think they are the scariest Creations sence Alien Back in the Day lol
Same as me trj, I hate how I can get to a point where I may actually win a fight, when a partner dies and I get the dreaded "GAME OVER" screen. I hope they put in some campaigns for a single character, or maybe even a whole other mode. Also in the top pic I would've had Chris defending 'cos he had the machine gun :D
Ha. Oh wow. So the AI still sucks. How disappointing. I mean it'll be nice to have someone along with you to ease the tension and have your back no matter how crappy they are as an AI but it still should be good if not somewhat decent. We're in an age where good AI is being done all the time and it definitely should be expected out of such a top tier game as Resident Evil 5. Not to mention how long it took to come out. Maybe a little less focus on the graphics next time.
the demo is amazing. like trj said you gotta do it co op because it sucks to fail because the stupid computer couldn't stay alive
