Change is not always good.

I'm a huge fan of the first three games, and Code Veronica on the Dreamcast, so was looking forward to this so much, Capcom did a great job re-writing the original on the Gamecube anhad hoped this would live up to all my expectations... Nope!

Its not a good sign when the in game graphics are better than the cut scenes which are all too "soft-focus" for my liking, and the camera is appalling, sure you can look around but as soon as you stop moving the right stick.... wham, its back behind you again, and unless you move around you don't get to change the view... which can make some combat sections immensely frustrating, I've found a good bit of cover, I can see the fella I want to shoot at, as soon as I raise my gun he's out of vision... and to get him in mys sights again I have to leave cover, turn around (on the spot) and walk back to cover, hoping I'm fractionally better positioned this time round... the only thing that makes the game difficult is the fact that your fighting the camera as well as the enemy... there's one shootout early on in an abandoned house that makes it impossible for you to see whats behind you at all, and with the camera fighting you for control it makes the whole set peice an exercise in survival not because of the torrent of enemies attacking, but because you're having to move around so much to try and see where they all are.

There's also a lot of nurse maiding, as you have to shepherd some brainless tart around for level after level, and she's hopelessly annoying, for someone who's father is so powerful you'd have thought she'd have had some basic self defense lessons but no, she stands, screams and lets herself get carried away... in the end I was shooting her myself to get her to shut up.

I like the way the action is portrayed, it looks great and the Merchant is a neat idea, but they've gone so overboard on the set peice action you're constantly being pushed to the next encounter, the element of exploration has been removed completely... there's no searching for keys, or emblems, its practically impossible to miss anything you might need its treating you like an idiot.

Part of me only played this to get a glimpse of what Resident Evil 5 will be like, unless they make some drastic improvements to the gameplay i'll give it a miss on the strength of this... if they'd left the gameplay of the originals and added graphics like we have here I'd be a happy man... but to me the game just doesn't do the series justice.
