A mask of gore and flash covering a scarred visage.

If you've played other free to play MMO's, you probably have a good idea of what to expect with Requiem: Memento Mori.

This game uses the Havoc physics engine for ragdoll upon death instead of an animation, and also has a dismemberment and blood shower for every monster you kill, but this is all flash to draw you into a game that doesn't deliver. You would think that having the Havoc engine in a game like this would be a good idea, but you would be wrong. The engine causes your movement to stutter and also causes your character to get hung on what looks to be smooth ground. Its tolerable at first, but quickly becomes more annoying than a six year old with a trumpet.

And now to the grind. Oh yes, there's a grind, and its all too apparent within a few hours of gameplay. There are also micro-transactions that give an advantage to players that decide to spend more money on the game than others, such as faster movement, increased experience gain, and special items to make their weapons and armor more powerful.

Combat. The most entertaining part of a game like this, right? Not so fun here. Sure, when you first begin its very fun to watch your enemies explode in a fountain of gore and dismemberment, but once you get to the point where the enemies stop waiting for you to take the first strike you notice the big problem that plagues this game. The monsters can attack you from very far away with melee attacks, while you don't have the convenience of doing the same to them. This makes running away from a battle that is going down hill nearly impossible. This is a huge problem for obvious reasons, but especially so since death in this game means a loss of experience, which is awful. Experience doesn't come quickly in the later levels of the game, and dying can take off not just a certain amount, but a percentage. A percentage that increases every time you die.

Now another problem with combat is the PVP. Any class that has an instant cast ranged attack will consistently destroy a melee class. And this happens all too often since every ranged class begins with an instant cast ranged attack, which is normally their main attack up until level 50.

Now the nightmare. Once time in the game reaches 11 pm, Nightmare monsters will spawn in areas in the game world. These monsters are very aggressive and very powerful; meant to be fought with a party of players. This is a big annoyance, since they can spawn right on top of you and surround you, leading to death, which then leads to experience loss.

As it stands, this game isn't worth your time unless you really want to play it. I'll admit that the game has improved greatly since my first experience with it, but it still has a long way to go before it gets anywhere near even a decent score from me.
