GS News - Publishers said 'You can't have a female character'

You know something, my roommate told me directly that he doesn't like playing games where he's the female, because it makes him feel weird.. because he's not a girl himself.  I've never heard such a 'closed up' remark before.. I told him.. "Dude, it's a STORY, you're playing in a written piece in an interactive movie.  I bet you didn't say that shit when you watched Trinity kick the shit out of the cops in the beginning of MATRIX"  and he didn't say anything.  But it just goes to show how either selfish, or close-minded some people are because they THINK they have to be badass, or playing some muscle-bound idiot of a character like Kratos, in order to be satisfied with the rest of the game... I just don't get it.

I'd love to live in a world where publishers would worry MORE about making a quality title, and LESS about whether or not their lead character has a schlong. If you can't enjoy a great game just because the main character pees differently than you, that's just pathetic. I had really hoped we'd be past this stupid shit by now. I, for one, am just hoping this game is decent. Post RE6 and the on disk DLC fiasco with Street Fighter x Tekken, that little Capcom logo in the corner has me far more concerned than the lady bits on the cover.

I'm not seeing how as games are normally directed at young adults and teens, and that audience is large number of boys, so women makes sales. =/ I know it sounds sexist but hormone driven teens like women, lol.

they should have the option of both genders.. like mass effect..   playing as a woman just feels wierd to me.   this game sounds interesting but the female only character puts me off. spending a bit more money on animating a male character would of covered both options.  unless this game is outstanding, theyve lost a sale.

My advice if you are going to offer a game with a female character only is to keep the games a mix of both male and female.  In other words, if you think the female character only is the new gaming core you are wrong--imo.  And if you can offer a game where you can play either gender that works very well for me too.

My biggest problem with gaming today are games like Halo 4, Assassin's Creed III, Mass Effect 3, Prototype 2, and maybe Tomb Raider--I haven't played the latest, etc.  I want fresh new stories and characters.  Halo 4 was BORING.  Assassin's Creed III was BORING.  I didn't go far in either one before just quitting!

These fools only concerns is for money.  They do not understand, it makes no difference, does the game make sense or is it playable.   After all of this time, now it matters.....alot of bull.

Meh doesn't matter to me either way, I don't see what difference it makes.

...um...not to sure what to say here, but while publishers have a right to be worried about raising sales to the broadest paying audience available this particular concern has been losing it's weight for years. Not even counting the fact that more females play games than ever before, it's a fact that many good games have proven that a main character's success has more to do with good writing and interesting gameplay than it's general appearance or gender. Some games that involve the player projecting themselves as the personality of the main character, like RPGs such as Skyrim or Mass Effect, the option of choosing what the main character is might carry more impact. However for most games in which the story is more linear, like God of War, Resident Evil, or Halo, this issue carries much less since the experience is more like watching the movie than acting out the lead within it, in my opinion.
