Bash away

User Rating: 7.5 | Red Faction: Guerrilla X360
Red Faction Guerrilla is a good game in many ways and a frustrating game in a few more.

The characters and storyline are nothing special. Character and story development start off okay early on but quickly get set by the wayside as is common in many open world games. It is not easy to focus pushing a story forward at the same time as having the player getting distracting by various side quests.

The main story quests are moderately interesting and for the most part well constructed although the difficulty curve on a one towards the end seems out of line with the others. The side quests are a good mix of fun challenges although I personally found the driving challenges an unwelcome addition. Most of the vehicles handle oddly at times which can lead to some frustration. Combat on the other hand is done well but not perfectly. The various weapons and upgrades lend a good variety to the mayhem and there is nothing quite so satisfying as crushing a bad guy with a solid swing from your sledgehammer.

Multiplayer is okay, some people may find it more enjoyable then others. There is a nice variety of maps and weapons to use but as with so many games it feels more like a "me too" versus a core strength of the game. Lastly there is a mode called wreaking crew which allows the player to create as much destruction as possible within a short period of time. Again a decent collection of maps and modes are available to get more time with the game.

Overall Red Faction Guerrilla is a solid effort that is worth giving a try. With the single player campaign coming in well over 20 hours and the fun to be had in bashing, shooting and exploding the fully destructible environments there is plenty to do and enjoy setting aside the few problems that keep this from being a great game.
