Imagine Solid Snake in the Old West.

User Rating: 8.2 | Red Dead Revolver XBOX
RDR is like the Metal Gear Solid of the old west minus most of the stealth mechanics. The main character Red resembles Solid Snake in looks and mannerism and the game includes a similar cast of quarky unique characters (Revolver Ocelot anyone?) that one would expect to find in a Metal Gear game. It has a similar extravagance of presentation and attempts to mimic the familiar scenes found in a stereotypical western. It does this through various methods including soundtrack/sound effects, dialogue, lighting affects, and characters range of moves. Graphically this isn't the prettiest game but the grainy screen filter used to give the game an old-timey feel does a good job of covering some of the rough edges. The levels are usually quite confined which, in this age of free-roaming games, is often taken as a negative quality but it works for this game. It adds to the close-quarters shoot-out feel of the fights. Personally I prefer this over an expansive level design where one must simply run and gun. The game is split up into relatively small levels or chapters which may be a turn-off to some but gives the game a nice pace. Almost all aspects of this game could be improved upon and feel unfinished but the basic formula is there for a good game and is executed to enough of a degree to make a fun game. It is definitely worth the very low price of a used copy.
